the bad and the really ugly

the staff was unfriendly and cold. we got an incident with thir garage door who was broked and they didn't knew it until it damage our car mercedes benz e350, scratching all the front bump and taking out the license! no one response for damage, manager was on vacation in a full hotel long weekend???room has not air extractor in bathroom and no security holder in bathtub. breakfast really poor. the only good think: the location, very convenience.

Cool old hotel, nicely kept, good price.

While not in the greatest part of the city, it is conveniently close (5 blocks) to one of the cable car lines. So get a day pass and you're good to go. It has been very nicely restored, the staff was very nice and the continental breakfast, while basic was completley adequate. I'd definately stay there again. There's also a Mel's Diner that has an entrance right off of the lobby, so that's cool!

Unbeatable location for the price

This is a Hotel with a good location. The breakfirst is a disaster, not enough seats for all the guests! Everything in plastic!

A Good Stay

We went to San Francisco for a fun weekend. Wicked Friday night, Outside Lands concert Saturday, and baseball game and comedy show on Sunday. The Opal was centrally located and was a quick walk or inexpensive cab ride away from all our activities. Maybe not the best neighborhood but not too bad. We had a clean, comfortable room and made the most of the ample complimentary continental breakfast each morning. Overall, this was a good place to stay and well worth the moderate price.

Good Hotel for the price

The Opal was a nice hotel. Took advantage of the fitness centre. Rooms were a bit small but the service at the front desk made up for anything that was missing. The staff are so friendly and helpful - suggesting places to see and go for sightseeing and dinner. Can walk to Union Square in about 15 minutes (downhill on the way there) - great price considering the location.

The Opal

This hotel is very quaint and cute. The rooms are very small but clean and included amenities such as iron and ironing board, hair blow dryer. The staff was very nice and helpful. The hotel is located on a major bus line so it was very convinient to get to the fisherman's wharf. Union square was within walking distance, about 5 blocks. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the complimentary breakfast. The menu included- toast, cold cereal, bagels (if you're one of the first people there), orange juice, tea, and coffee. Although, Mel's Drive-in is next door and can be accessed from the lobby.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

To park in the hotel lots it costs about $28 per night. However, I found it worth it with the amount of traffic, lack of parking, and street meters in San Francisco. Plus, the bus line only costs $2 per person and you can ride and/or transfer buses for several hours.

very good for the price

I visited family and friends who lived close by. The room had jus the one chair at the desk. An easy chair would have been nice. Service was extremely good and quick. Continental breakfast was very nice.

a good value

good location for walking to many attractions. close to transportation. only one working ice-machine for 5 floors. insufficient seating for breakfast during high season. buffet breakfast was adequate. Dest staff was always helpful and courteous. This hotel does not have a lot of amenitities but its location and price make it a good value.

Muni pass is a good deal for someone who plans on taking public transportation to get around San Francisco.
