Good Price, A Little Sacrifice

San Francisco being the city that it is, I could not expect to get a decent price on a hotel room without a little sacrifice. The hotel was old and out-dated. Carpets were stained throughout the hallways and room. Our room was a little muggy with a slight odor, but was tolerable with the window open. Besides, most of our time was spent out and about and the room just a place to sleep. Therefore it was a clean enough place even though I typically would prefer a nicer environment. In addition, the room had no fridge which is a major negative for our family. We paid the additional price to have parking every evening. Well worth the money. The staff was very friendly and quick to respond to any requests. Being that I had two children with me (ages 2 and 4) it is nice when you do not have to wait very long when you need something. Location was great. Not very far from anything we had planned to do or see.

Not a good place to sleep

This is an average hotel with dated interior. Staff was polite and helpful and the room was clean, BUT there was a constant loud sound from some pipes that made it difficult to sleep. I wont stay here again.

Was not what I expected

The bedroom was very small but clean although the bathroom quite large. Breakfast was horrible. We did not eat at the hotel and had to pay for our breakfast somewhere else. There was a fee to use the hotel computer and the parking fee was very high. The air conditioner blew directly on the bed and although we tried to change directions of the air, we could not.

Funky

We stayed one night. Room was nice and clean. Bath was small and shower curtain rod fell down under the weight of two dry towels. Parking a rental was convenient-self park and cheaper than many other downtown SF hotels. No help offered with luggage.

not a great value

Hotel Provides little to nothing, very old, outdated, rooms have poor insulation from noise and the elements, some areas the smell of old is evident, for today's standards this is way outdated, for the price you are better of going with the known names

Tired, needs updating

I stayed four nights at the Opal recently. I found the hotel decor in need of updating. My room was generally clean with the decor (carpet, furniture, bed) in need of updating. It also had an unpleasant odor, similar to one after your house is fumigated. Given all this, I was disappointed in the accommodations and will not stay again at the Opal.

Dirty Rooms

Front desk was not very friendly. Did not offer or asked if we wanted a second room key. The room was very dark. The carpet was old and very dirty. The sheets and blankets had mendings done once too many. They should have been replaced. After the first night, my 3 yr old son's pillow was missing. We had it placed in our bags to ensure it would not be misplaced. It was gone that evening. We had called front desk to inquire if they had found a child's pillow and neither housekeeping nor front desk was helpful. We had explained it to the manager that it was placed in our bags and it had disappeared. The pillows were hand made for my little ones and one was missing from our bags. They did nothing about it. It was nice to have the continental breakfast. Dining area was too small to accommodate all the guests (both inside and outside near front desk). We came home with hives from dirty bed sheets and blankets.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Japantown is 5 blocks away. Good walk. Chinatown is easy access to by bus or 14 blocks by foot. Short cab ride to the Pier and Wharf. Mel's dinner is next door and has entrance access in hotel.
