Good location, old hotel

Overall, the hotel was too expensive for what we got out of it. We really just paid $250 a night for a good location and an old hotel. If it was renovated, it would be a better value, but the hotel is past its prime. Also another important note, parking at the hotel costs $30 a day which I found excessive. I wish we would have stayed across the bay in a hotel half the price and much nicer and we still would have paid the same for parking in the city when we came to visit. So really if you stay here you're just paying for a good location but I would recommend somewhere else.

Good location, friendly staff

The staff is very friendly. The location is great. You can easily walk to Union Square, and those that are fit can easily reach Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. The amenities are basic and it is a clean hotel. They have a wine reception on Wednesdays for 1 hour which was a nice touch.

City exploring

Staff was very friendly and helpful. We had two rooms in the outside area. Yes there is inside rooms and outside rooms. Hotel/motel? Free continental breakfast was simple but better than others I've had. Great location for us to walk the city. Coffee and tea in the lobby available at all times, we loved that.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

San Francisco is not very good for bigger parties to dine out. 5 or more, you have to do some searching to find a place that has enough room for everyone to sit together. It is manageable..

Great location, great price, good hotel

The staff was wonderful, very helpful in suggesting restaurants, bars, and guiding us to where we wanted to go. The room was a bit small with a slightly hard bed, but pretty clean. Within walking distance of Chinatown, Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf (although that one is a long walk). Decent inexpensive restaurants and bars nearby. The best bang for your buck, other nearby hotels were slightly less expensive but very sketchy-looking, others were much more expensive and looked very comparable at least from the outside.

Had low expectations, so was pleasantly surprised

After reading a bunch of reviews of this hotel, I set my expectations pretty low. However after staying 4 nights there, I didn't have any issues at all. The location is just on the edge of the sketchy Tenderloin district. I felt safe walking around, but I think at night girls would be a bit scared to walk around alone. The nice thing about the location is that it's right on the bus route to Union Square, Japan town, etc, and public transportation is quite safe in SF. There's also a popular bar across the street that serves great comfort food, Mel's diner connected to the hotel, and an AMC theater next door. As people had mentioned, the continental breakfast is probably the weakest I've ever seen, with just bread, yogurt, & muffins. It wasn't a big deal to me though. Staff seemed nice enough, and the room was just fine. I liked that they used normal sized pillows versus the tiny ones at some other hotels. My only knock is that the carpet is pretty dingy. Too bad they don't have a PC for you to print out airline boarding passes.

Good location with a few drawbacks

The location of the hotel is really good, you can walk to Union Square in about 10 minutes, which is the center for upscale shopping. The rooms are clean and well kept, they even refill the tissue box. However, some of the rooms face the opposite wall of the building so there is no sunlight and you do not even see the sky. The breakfast is very basic, which is certainly reflected in the room rate. Walking from the hotel to Union Square in evening hours is not to recommend, there are strange people hanging out in the streets!

OK but.....

Staff are very helpful and friendly. Our first room was opposite an elevator door and we were moved the following day to a larger room with cable TV. The Opal hotel is located on a busy street so rooms suffer from internal or external noise so take your pick!! Hotel was not as central as expected for sightseeing although well serviced by public transport.
