October Opal Stay

We found the Opal had lots of character (with a couple of antique pianos on the ground floor). Didn't appreciate that there was an extra $30 charge for parking (but all the San Fran hotels seem to do that). It's on the bus line, so getting around town that way is fine. We enjoyed the room (although some might find it small). Service was fine and the breakfast ordinary. If seeing the homeless makes you uncomfortable, you might not want to hang out right outside the hotel. Overall, we found the Opal to be a good price for sight-seeing the beautiful city of San Francisco!

We highly recommend renting bicycles for getting around the city. There are a number of places to rent bikes for the day (or longer). We biked over the Golden Gate Bridge and through Golden Gate Park and loved it. Be prepared for hills...it is a very hilly city!!! Also, the food next door at the diner was very good and at a reasonable price!

Excellent staff

I dealt with three different people at the front desk. All were excellent. Service obviously is a priority here. Having an adjacent Mel's diner is a big plus.

Stay at The OPAL for a nice experience

I was there at SFO for a conference and stayed at The Opal for 4 nights. It was a very nice experience. The price was right and so the was the staff. I stayed in a double queen bed room. It was decent enough for a single person though I thought it would have been a little small for two people. There was a huge rush of tourists in the hotel and the staff maintained the hotel very nicely. Overall a value for money Hotel and yeah they have a free breakfast every morning and there is a diner which is open till late on the 1st floor.

Affordable but somewhat dissatisfied

The Opal is very close to Fisherman's Wharf which is where we spent most of our time. The hotel itself offers a great price for downtown San Francisco. There are a lot of bums that hang out on the streets in the area though. The rooms are pretty small but very clean. The vending machines didn't have any soda so I had to go to the store or a restaurant to get something to drink (they do put a couple bottles of water in your room though). Mel's diner is downstairs, really good food, open really late. We had a car though and didn't expect to pay $25 a night for parking. It isn't the easiest access for parking. You have to make a u-turn to get into the garage and then you have to get out of your car and push a button for the garage door to open and then hurry to get back in your car before the door closes. Not the best if you have a car. It was pretty easy to catch public transporation. Overall, it wasn't bad but it wouldn't be my first choice if I were to go back.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

A short drive or cab ride away is Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 (for shopping), Alcatraz (a must-see!) great restaurants, and the Golden Gate Bridge. You would be better off taking public transporatation than driving. The parking at Fisherman's Wharf is about $4 an hour, no more than $28 per day.

Good Hotel for the price

The Opal was a nice hotel. Took advantage of the fitness centre. Rooms were a bit small but the service at the front desk made up for anything that was missing. The staff are so friendly and helpful - suggesting places to see and go for sightseeing and dinner. Can walk to Union Square in about 15 minutes (downhill on the way there) - great price considering the location.

Just perfect - if your expectations are right.

The Opal is a nearly 100 year old property that's been brought up to date without changing the inherent character of the original hotel. Staff is helpful and very pleasant. Hotel is very clean. Rooms are very tidy albeit small. The hotel's location is superb. The reviews that I have read by others include a number of complaints that I find unreasonable, to-wit: Crackheads are outside every hotel in San Francisco, unless you pay for a hotel with staff on the curb to keep them away. A free continental breakfast isn't going to be a Denny's Grand Slam. It's free. The rooms are small-ish because the building is nearly 100 years old, and the rooms are quite inexpensive for the level of cleanliness and service delivered. All in all, this is an outstanding budget choice for anyone wanting to stay near the Civic Center of San Francisco.

Highly Recommended

I was greeted by a very friendly manager at check-in. He even voluntarily recommended activities and told me what areas to "avoid" on a map. The room and bathroom were very clean. This hotel is charming and located conveniently. The only disadvantage is the expensive parking fee and the lack of street parking in the vicinity.

Park your car on the street - preferably one without street cleaning restrictions and take the bus! Saves you the inconvenience of driving around to look for a parking spot.
