Other amenities include a complimentary on-site fitness center and 24-hour coffee and tea service, as well as a complimentary breakfast buffet.

Features
The hotel has received a three-diamond rating from AAA and was selected as the Crescent Hotel and Resorts "Hotel of the Year" in 2008. A baby grand piano welcomes visitors to the lobby of The Opal -- a public area decorated to invoke the way it looked when the hotel debuted in 1908.

Elsewhere on the property is a 24-hour laundry facility (fees apply) and car rental desk (fees apply; rentals also can be facilitated by the concierge). Overnight parking is also available (fees apply).

Satisfactory but nothing special

Didn't really feel like a three star hotel. Room was pretty small. But for the price the stay was fine, just nothing to write home about.

good budget hotel in the heart of it all

SF can be an expensive city to visit, however staying here at the Opal saved us these expenses. Very close to many of SF's public transit systems. Tons of places to eat at and many open late or 24 hours. Hotel rooms were decent, we stayed in what seemed to be an addition, and room 110 was pretty large with 2 double beds, quite, comfy beds, weak water pressure & coffee 24 hours a day in lobby. Bring your own toiletries though, none provided for guest. Safe area, close to many things, cabs are reliable, bout $40 with tip from airport.

DON'T RENT CAR! Use the public transit systems or cabs. They're easier, cheaper and user friendly too. Parking is minimal & expensive. We're glad that we didn't get a car, made shopping chinatown, pier 39, wharf, Japan town & eating so much easier and faster.

Pretty Good

Hotel was fine. Staff was nice, room was clean. The Internet worked, but would cut out a lot, even when I paid the extra $2 for the "high speed" option. The laundry room was out of service when I needed it... but that's just bad timing. There were plenty of things within walking distance, and bus routes right outside. Overall I enjoyed my stay.

Heart of SFO

You cant get a better hotel at a cheaper price in the heart of SFO. The layout of the hotel is such that it is utilizing maximum available space still it does not look congested. There were a large number of guests during the thanks giving stay that I was there, it shows the hotel is sought after. Parking is $28 a day extra. It offers free wired internet connection in the room is free.

Nice hotel in a not so nice location

The title says it all. The location is by no means "bad", but there are better. Being on the edge of the Tenderloin District doesn't help things. That being said, parking is secure in a garage below the hotel, and the rooms were clean. The hot water took about 8-10 minutes to reach the shower head, with the sink and the shower on full hot. The staff was friendly and helpful.

hotel staff very helpful

Our college age son stayed here overnight because it's close to the Spanish consulate where he had to get his visa. He was pick pocketed and the hotel staff went above and beyond to help him out. He said the area of town was sort of sketchy, though.
