Other amenities include a complimentary on-site fitness center and 24-hour coffee and tea service, as well as a complimentary breakfast buffet.

Features
The hotel has received a three-diamond rating from AAA and was selected as the Crescent Hotel and Resorts "Hotel of the Year" in 2008. A baby grand piano welcomes visitors to the lobby of The Opal -- a public area decorated to invoke the way it looked when the hotel debuted in 1908.

Central location and car friendly

The location was perfect -- halfway between Mission District and Waterfront. Between Union Square and Japantown. They give you a remote control to open the garage doors and this allows you to come and go at will.

Opal in the rough

Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean well appointed rooms (regular tv rather than flat screen, but no big deal). Great location for the opera house, hospital, municipal buildings etc. AMC theater next door and Mel's Diner attached to hotel.

Fair Deal

Front desk staff person was very efficient and very helpful. Did not feel rushed, all questions answered. It's an old hotel, renovated. You may feel like you are stepping into history, but the free wifi is up to date! Parking off street in downtown aan francisco is hard to find. The opal has it, it's not Cheak but probably reasonable.

Great value for good location and helpful staff

I booked this hotel for the beginning of my stay, and was impressed by how helpful the staff. They suggested an alternative parking option to the hotel's parking, which saved us some cash. The rooms are a bit dark with "tired" furnishings, but comfortable enough. They are refurbishing part of the hotel now. Breakfast is not very enticing, but ok for a quick something before heading out. Overall, the location and staff won out, so I ended up booking it again for the end of our week's trip to Northern California.

It was really bad

The location was not convenient the parking was terrible for $34 and the sinks leaked. The rooms were old and there was broken doors in the hallway. The noise was all night long. It was not worth the rating I saw on the web site before I booked.

Was not what I expected

The bedroom was very small but clean although the bathroom quite large. Breakfast was horrible. We did not eat at the hotel and had to pay for our breakfast somewhere else. There was a fee to use the hotel computer and the parking fee was very high. The air conditioner blew directly on the bed and although we tried to change directions of the air, we could not.

Not as close to Union Sq as appears

The hotel is older but the staff is friendly, the rooms are clean and there is free Wi-Fi (something most downtown hotels charge for). However, it is not as close to Union Sq as it appears on the map and you have to walk through the tenderloin to get there (SF's public transit doesn't reach all parts of the city). There are a fair amount of homeless people in the tenderloin who will ask you for money. I never felt threatened but uncomfortable, and I was with my husband who can look intimidating.
