Opal was good value

Would not recommend Sat, Oct 24, 2015
This is an older hotel. Our room was a good size, clean and quiet. Fitness room is not great. The staff is very helpful. The location is somewhat suspect. You need to be careful when walking at night in the area.

Worst Experience With A Hotel

Would not recommend Fri, Oct 16, 2015
I don't normally leave reviews, but I felt compelled to share our story since it was so awful. My husband and I were traveling to San Francisco for a wedding when our flight was delayed, and connecting flight missed (due to original delay). I called the hotel to explain that we would not be in when we thought we would, and asked what our options were. The man at the front desk said there was nothing he could do, and we would be charged the full amount for the room even though we wouldn't be able to stay there. After dealing with the airport employees, rental car companies, etc., I was at my breaking point. This was the worst customer service I had received by far. (Short version of what happened.) When we arrived, we stayed with family. I have told everyone about our awful experience, and friends and family were appalled at how they treated us after our horrible travel experiences. Needless to say, no one that has traveled to San Francisco since has stayed there since my warning. There are plenty of other great, accommodating hotels in San Francisco. No need to waste your time, and your money (hundreds of dollars) like we did.

Nice quick getaway

Would recommend Wed, Oct 7, 2015
The hotel was clean, the staff were nice, everything was as I expected. It's in a great location! Even though it doesn't have a casino within it, it's a very very easy ~5 minute walk down the boardwalk to a plethora of them!

The hotel was clean and comfortable, and the staff professional and helpful. The food at Mel's Drive-Thru, in the same building as the hotel, is very good and inexpensive I ate breakfast there everyday and didn't bother with the hotel's buffet breakfast. A bonus is the short walk to the California Street cable car for getting to my meetings downtown.

Calfornia trip with friends

Would recommend Tue, Sep 29, 2015
We just returned from a 10 day trip to California that ended in San Francisco. Our 3 day stay in the Opal Hotel was great. While I was doing my research of hotels the Opal grabbed me immediately. The location was perfect as we were going to spend a lot of time at the Fisherman's Wharf and the waterfront and we could catch a bus (#47) in front of the hotel. There were some reviews that stated the neighborhood was not that great but we found the area to be fine. We even walked down to Union Square one evening with no problems. The room was clean, comfortable (nice luxurious bed and I loved the normal sized pillows. Thank you.) and quiet even though we faced Van Ness Avenue. Our rooms were down a hallway away from the main hall and we had privacy as well as a view of the street. The bathroom was updated and very clean as well as roomy. The breakfast was just ok. It lacked in choices. There wasn't any cereal and the hard boiled eggs were more than hard boiled. The toaster waffles were horrible but the choices for toast were good. In our family we have a saying It filled a void. We have to give Roger, the manager, kudos because he handled an unusual situation with respect and grace as well as being professional. We were happy with the results and left with a positive feeling. YEA Roger!!!! Overall, this was a great spot and a wonderful end to a California vacation.

Will never stay there again

Would not recommend Fri, Sep 25, 2015
The hotel was advertised as hotel with updated rooms. When we got there our room was outdated: stained old carpet in the room, the grout in the bathroom had some mold, toilet paper was extremely cheap and thin, and toilet seat was smaller than the toilet bowl. The worst part was discovering that they have thin walls. We woke up between 6am - 6.40 am every morning because our neighbors were using bathroom. We heard the noise from their shower's running water and flashing toilet as if it was inside of our room. The hotel also has cheap breakfast: concentrated juices, hardboiled eggs, cheap yogurt, some cheap waffles and muffins, some not fresh looking fruits. This was my third visit to SF. I will definitely never stay in this hotel again. The hotel is overrated and has misleading advertisement.

Cosy European Style Hotel

Would recommend Fri, Sep 25, 2015
I enjoyed my stay at The Opal. As a low budget business traveler (self-employed) the price was right compared to main stream business brand hotels. The amenities a business traveler needs -- WiFi! -- were available at no extra charge and the connectivity was great. A continental+ breakfast is provided at no extra charge (included hardboiled eggs! Yay!). Coffee is available in the lobby. I did miss an in room coffee maker but otherwise the amenities in the room were great -- iron, ironing board, wifi, TV, toiletries. My bed was comfortable and I was able to adjust the room temperature to my liking. The bathroom was spotless. It was a learning experience to get hot water -- you had to have the faucet turned all the way to the hot side. Once I figured that out, all was fine. I would stay here again. Note: there is no free parking or parking lot at the hotel.

Overall all this hotel was good for the price. The room was small but clean. The staff were friendly. They offer free wine and appetizers on Tuesday, which is good.
