Eventful Family Holiday
The hotel provides complimentary breakfast of continental bakery, something which is not common for tourist hotels in America I would say. Hotel location is within walking distance to downtown Union Square and City Hall, which is very convenient for shopping and typical tourist leisure walking.

Not great
It was one of the cheapest hotels we could find, but it was worse than we expected for the price. It is close to many nice destinations, but the area right next to the hotel is bad and considered dangerous by night. The entire hotel is non-smoking but the room we got smelled cigarette. We asked to change and they only had one other room available. The breakfast space is small so finding a place to sit is not easy and the food options are limited.

Knowledgeable and friendly staff. The building was old and outdated. The complementary breakfast wasn't worth eating. I would not recommend this hotel to a friend

Not really worth the price
I was there on my own and the first thing I noticed is that walking around the area wasn't safe... so if you're traveling alone and without a car this is not an ideal area to stay: a lot of homeless people, drug addicts, gangs in the area. Don't walk thorough the Geary st. not a safe area. The room was also not worth the price I paid $140. Wouldn't recommend

Great stay. The staff were excellent and very helpful. I would stay here again. The only problem I would say is the location of the hotel was not the best.

Haunted Hotel in the Tenderloin
The hotel itself is decent, historical and in a nice part of the Tenderloin away from the Civic Center sketchy area. However, my friend and I stayed on the 4th floor only to find on our first night there that it was haunted! My friend saw a female ghost the first night who was wearing a white dress eerily similar to a painting of a girl and her family that was in the room. Our next night strange things kept happening...if you don't mind friendly ghosts then this is a good place..if they freak you out like they did my friend and I, then stay away! Other than that the hotel comes with free breakfast, tea and coffee all day, and its secure with only key access to get in the front door. Its close to buses and the rooms are decent for San Francisco.

A great value!
The Opal is a great find for a cost-conscious visitor. It's located on the edge of the seedy and nice parts of town. One block in the wrong direction and you're in ghetto. One block in opposite direction and you're in a pleasant neighborhood. The building is dated but the staff are very friendly. The rooms are small but clean. The good news is you are on a major bus route to take you anywhere you want to go quickly. Best of all, the price is 1/3 of other hotels in the area. If I was looking for a place to stay "on the cheap" in San Francisco, I'd definitely stay here again.

Great location for the price
Hotel is located on Van Ness and Geary...not a great place in the city, but easy to get to everything else by cab. Reasonable parking located just next door on O'Farrell Street. Staff very friendly. Room was very clean, but very small, although they do have larger rooms. For the price this hotel is hard to beat. I will stay there again in the future.
