Great deal, location is great

Had a really nice stay at the Monarch Hotel. Don't let the negative reviews fool you. I was kind of expecting the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised. Staff was extremely helpful -- the day we checked out they help our bags for us in a locked room, so we could roam around the city without our luggage. They also called and reserved a shuttle for us to the airport. The room was great, clean, and comfortable. We ran a half marathon and we needed to have good rest the night before and after, and it was great! The TV had HBO (I was so stoked on this...don't have it at home). They didn't have awesome hotel soaps or lotions or anything...but I didn't go in with the assumption that they would. The neighborhood is a bit sketch, but it's San Francisco people. 15 minutes walking to Union Square. Public transportation was right around the corner, as well as some diners and drug stores to buy snack and food. I was excited about this hotel after our stay, and will definitely be coming back!

Spacious and affordable (for SF)

I had a king room on the 5th floor for 2 nights. The good: Relatively affordable for a hotel room in the city. The rooms look like they have been renovated recently. They were large and clean and the bed was comfortable. Lots of storage space including a pretty big closet. Big windows to look out and good blackout curtains to keep the morning sun out. The place also has an elevator. The mediocre: The tub bottom was uneven but at least it was pretty clean. It's on the edge of the Tenderloin so it's a little seedy, but it is also near the happening Polk St. bar scene). All-in-one shampoo conditioner. The bad: I could hear people walking in the room above me. Late at night they lock the lobby door but the guy working was asleep and didn't wake up to the call button so I had to pound on the door. He was also really rude when asking me to show my room key. I'm a guest not a criminal!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Two great breakfast places are nearby. Moulin Rouge is a cute elderly Asian couple that does inexpensive diner style breakfasts. I had fluffy banana walnut pancakes with sausage and eggs. Red Door Cafe does huge mounds of flour tortilla tacos and wonderful egg dishes, but the real attraction of the place is the flamboyant owner Ahmed who keeps you entertained with his quirky restaurant and personality (adult humor, not for kids!).

nice experience

staff were amazing, all of them, really helpful and nice.if u need a taxi they will call one for u. the entire hotel has a weird smell like other people commented but it is normal bcoz all the floor and the walls are made of wood, its nothing rotten its just the wood. internet is week in the room,i was in the six floor but i guess its better in the lobby. windows r not really 100% noise proof but its still ok.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

the best thing that u can do is to rent a car and go out of the city,do the research and drive out of the city, many many cities to see and things to do.u will never regret hiring a car.be smart when it comes for parking the car at night,u can use these parking building cheaper then the parking with a meter on the side of the road. across the hotel there is a homeless shelter but they never bother u. around the hotel u can find everything, from mobile shops, restaurants, grocery, bus stop, parking, taxis, car rentals, bars, union square and all the malls are just 10 min walk. price wize,it was a little bit pricy for me becoz i booked late. if u want a shuttle bus from the hotel to the airport they can book it for u and it will cost u only 15$ but if u take a taxi it will cost u at least 45$

NOT AS ADVERTISED

FIRST OF ALL THE MAIN PICTURE OF THE HOTEL ON THE ORB SITE IS NOT THE HOTEL. ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE. VERY MISLEADING. I PREPAID FOR THE HOTEL FOR A CLIENT THROUGH ORB HOWEVER THEY NEVER CHARGED ME THEY CHARGED MY CLIENT AT CHECK OUT. I EVEN FAXED A REQUEST FOR AUTH OF MY CARD FOR ANY FEES AND THEY NEVER USED IT. THE ROOMS WERE LOUD AND OUTDATED AND NOT VERY CLEAN. THE STAFF WAS NOT HELPFUL. DO NOT THINK YOU ARE GETTING A DEAL. ALSO IT IS BETTER TO BOOK DIRECTLY WITH THE HOTEL.

Not worth it

The rooms are super tiny and paint is cracking. This place def needs a make over. The front desk person was either very helpful or rude. The female lady was nice but the man who worked the front desk was not helpful. We asked him to call a cab for us. He did but let the cab leave as we were coming down the stairs. Like really? Why would u do that. Its not that expensive but I don't think it was worth the $120 a night we spent.

It's what I expected

It's about what you would expect for the price. We just needed a place to pregame before the Giants game and a place to crash after so, it was fine. They NEED better pillows though - we both had horrible neck aches in the morning!

Good location, need to improve some amenities

location was good, 15-20 min walk from Powell Bart station. Room can be a little more clean, and working alarm clock, coffe maker, a little better bed can be very comforting. Little attention to a few details can make this place pleasant. Price of $84.00 was good for the location. Room is small so for single people for short stay can be ok.
