Good for the Pice
The Baldwin is in a great location, steps from the Chinatown Gate and close to transportation at Union Square. Taxis come by alot too since there are so many other hotels in that same area. The room was clean, had just the basics, but was comfortable. It was a bit loud at night, but a pair of earplugs did the trick. The rooms near the elevator catch some of the noise, so be sure to stay away from the rooms ending with 01 and 02. Overall, a great option for the budget traveler.

Entertainment tip:
Short walk from hotel
The Tonga Room at the Fairmont Hotel is a ton of fun for dinner, drinks and live entertainment. It's tiki-themed with thatch roofs and Easter Island drinking glasses, and a pool in the middle where the band plays while floating on a boat. Great for parties. Make a reservation!

Authentic
This is a very dated bldg. right outside of the Chinatown gate. The location is great and all the front desk staff are sweet and accomodating. The internet is free but spotty and the antiquated central heating system is loud, hot and not adjustable. I would have felt better about this place had we paid a little less than a total of $100 per night.

Hair in bed
The Baldwin would have been just fine for my needs - I needed an affordable place to sleep in downtown San Francisco, which is hard to find. Then I pulled back the covers on the bed to find hair(s) from the either cleaning staff or the last guess. Nice people running the place, but the cleanliness left something to be desired.

Nice boutique hotel in a great location
This was a nice boutique hotel in a great location. The lobby was undergoing renovations (Feb 2012) but otherwise it was fine.

Good value for money
We were satisfied with our stay at this hotel, the location (which we think is the mos important thing when travelling) is perfect, close to everything, walking distance ... We just used the room for sleeping and bathing and it served its purpose. The shower is ugly but again, it works, so its ok for the price we pay ... just dont forget your flip-flops to get into it. At night it was a little bit noisy outside but I didn't we didn't have any problems to sleep.

Short walk from hotel
Little Italy has AMAZING places for dinning, beautiful, delicious and great price ... and it is just across china town, you can walk on grant ave until reach columbus or ... if you feel a little unsecure by walking in china town (as we did, jaja) you can walk on any parallel street and believe us ... its worth the walk!

Blast from the past
I knew what I was in for when I was handed the metal key on the Key ring. I felt like the room was used to film old Starsky & Hutch shows : ) It was clean, and the location was great however.

We had never been to San Fracisco and were happy to see this hotel was in a perfect location to sightsee. You are very close to everything. The accommodations are modest but clean. I would stay at this hotel again.

Four Nights at The Baldwin - January 2012
The staff were very accommodating and friendly. I had asked for a quiet room (far from the elevator) when I reserved and they delivered. The room is large enough and was clean. The flat-screen TV worked well, the shower was great (hot, voluminous) and the bed was firm -- which I like -- but a bit lumpy. Sheets are changed every two days, which is fine by me. No risk of needing to call down for more toilet paper or Kleenex; extras provided in the room. The steam radiator heating system is noisy, though my room was comfortable. Each day there was a clever "folded towel animal" (Iike Origami with towels) on the bed. Truly, a unique touch. Great value, great location. I'm definitely coming back.
