Boutique luxury with a free wine hour within minutes of Union Square

Occupying a beautifully restored 17-story Spanish revival building in the heart of San Francisco, the Serrano Hotel, a Kimpton property, is both fun and sophisticated. The decor displays a healthy dose of whimsy, as the lobby and rooms incorporate vibrant colors and exotic Spanish and Morrocan accents. The on-site restaurant, Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, serves upscale tavern-inspired fare in a hip and modern space. Serrano offers wine hour every evening, as well as in-room spa services.

Highlights
  • Hosted evening wine hour
  • Union Square and Theater District offer unparalleled shopping and culture
  • Upscale tavern-inspired fare at Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, the on-site eatery
Rooms

Oversized beds, high ceilings and colorful accents characterize just about all of the Serrano's 236 rooms, 19 of which are suites. Accommodations come standard with cordless phones, iPod docking stations, honor bars, Aveda bath products and laptop-sized safes. The special "Wicked Suite" features photos of characters from the show "Wicked" and was designed in purple and green. Overnight shoeshines are complimentary. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access is available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).

Features

The Serrano prides itself on fun. Arriving guests can try their luck in the "Check-In Challenge," a friendly card-game competition. If the guest wins, the prize is a free upgrade (when available). If the house wins, the guest is invited to make a voluntary contribution to the local SPCA. The property also owns a library of board games for guests to use in the lobby. Upon request, games are delivered to rooms.

The 24-hour on-site fitness center is complimentary. Spa services ranging from massage to facials and nail work are available in-room. The hotel also hosts an evening wine hour featuring local wines and offers complimentary limousine service to the Financial District on weekday mornings (when available).

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Dining
Don’t miss Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, the adjacent (but hotel-operated) restaurant which offers a great menu of upscale tavern-inspired fare and an extensive beer selection.

Parking

The only problem was that the valet parking rate was too high. That is where it adds up to make it almost not worth it. Everything else was good.

Great location!

Great location, friendly staff, clean room! But I was dissapointed with the amount of amenities. They didnt have WIFI, you had to pay a lot for parking, no breakfast, just nothing above and beyond. You get the bare minimum, which I was disapointed with. Overall it was great, I just wished they would give a little bit extra since the price is high.

Very pleasant stay

Optimal location, clean room (not huge but big enough for the two of us, and it was upgraded for free to a king size), comfortable bed, and very nice staff. I forgot my cell charger at home, and the staff found one to borrow. Very nice experience. We will be staying here again next time we are back in San Francisco.

Nice room

We booked the executive suite for my husband, me and our young adult son. We had the king bed, he had the pull out couch. We assumed the hotel would make up his pull out bed but they didn't. In fact we had to ask for linens and blanket and make it up ourselves each night(4). Reception on the 2 TV's wasn't so great. Bath w/ Jacuzzi tub was nice. Rooms were tasteful, clean and windows could be opened which is a plus for me. Sixth floor was quiet. Complimentary coffee, newspapers and cocktail hour appreciated. Location is borderline Tenderloin (as are many of the hotels)so there are many broken people on the street which is a problem for most of SF.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

SF has good reliable public transit. Walk when you can- it's great exercise and you see a lot. Otherwise, take the bus and get a transfer which you can use up to several hour later.

Excellent Location

The location of the hotel was perfect for our combined city jaunts and trips to Muir Woods & Monterey. The hotel is very close to BART, cable car and trolley stops. Walking trips included Union Square, Museum of Modern Art, Art of Dr. Suess Gallery (Geary St) and the Orpheum (Wicked). Hertz rental car very close by on Mason Street and facilitated trips to Muir Woods, Muir Beach and Monterey. Trips to Alcatraiz, Fisherman's Wharf, the Wax Museum, Coit Tower and Lombard Street were very much enjoyed. Hotel staff were very pleasant and helpul - especially with taxi arrangements and food recommendations. Taylor Street Cafe and Dottie's True BLue Cafe are excellent for breakfast and/or lunch -- expect long lines as both are very small venues. As neither my 16-year old son or 14-year old daughter had ever been to San Fran it was an educational trip as they learned the difference between high-density city living compared to medium-density midwest living.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

A visit to The Orpheum is definitely in order. We saw Wicked during our visit and it was an excellent performance in an excellent venue. A very short walk from the Serrano with a taxi return recommended after the showing.

Great place to bring your dog

Although it doesn't look like much from the outside, the lobby and rooms are charming and pretty -- and the staff is super friendly, both to my and my dog. The Union Square location is ideal for seeing the city, and my room (facing the back of the hotel -- not the street) was very quiet. I slept like a baby!!

Hotel Serrano

The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. We were very pleased with the location and the dining recommendations of the staff. The restaurant in the hotel was great for a quick meal. I wish we had chosen a place with a pool / hot tub...but this worked quite well.

Fabulous All Around Hotel

The staff were extremely helpful with directions and restaurant recommendations and reservations. We had tickets to the King Tut exhibit at the de Young Museum. When asking for directions they informed us that museums are usually closed Mondays. Even after I checked my tickets they called the museum to double check before we made the trip over! It was also a wonderful touch to come back to the hotel late in the afternoon after an exhaustive day out to come back and be offered wine in the lobby to sit and relax. I HIGHLY recommend this hotel. Very convenient to Union Square
