Boutique luxury with a free wine hour within minutes of Union Square

Occupying a beautifully restored 17-story Spanish revival building in the heart of San Francisco, the Serrano Hotel, a Kimpton property, is both fun and sophisticated. The decor displays a healthy dose of whimsy, as the lobby and rooms incorporate vibrant colors and exotic Spanish and Morrocan accents. The on-site restaurant, Ponzu, serves up pan-Asian fare in a hip and modern space. Serrano offers wine hour every evening, as well as in-room spa services.

Highlights
  • Hosted evening wine hour
  • Union Square and Theater District offer unparalleled shopping and culture
  • Pan-Asian cuisine at Ponzu, the on-site eatery
Rooms

Oversized beds, high ceilings and colorful accents characterize just about all of the Serrano's 236 rooms, 19 of which are suites. Accommodations come standard with cordless phones, iPod docking stations, honor bars, Aveda bath products and laptop-sized safes. The special "Wicked Suite" features photos of characters from the show "Wicked" and was designed in purple and green. Overnight shoeshines are complimentary. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access is available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).

Features

The Serrano prides itself on fun. Arriving guests can try their luck in the "Check-In Challenge," a friendly card-game competition. If the guest wins, the prize is a free upgrade (when available). If the house wins, the guest is invited to make a voluntary contribution to the local SPCA. The property also owns a library of board games for guests to use in the lobby. Upon request, games are delivered to rooms.

The 24-hour on-site fitness center is complimentary. Spa services ranging from massage to facials and nail work are available in-room. The hotel also hosts an evening wine hour featuring local wines and offers complimentary limousine service to the Financial District on weekday mornings (when available).

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply); all hybrid vehicles receive a 25 percent discount.

Dining

Don't miss Ponzu, the adjacent (but hotel-operated) restaurant with an Asian flare. Dishes, many of which are served Tapas-style, have bright, bold flavors.

Wouldn't be my first choice.

The staff was very nice and willing to upgrade us for a early check in. Our room was decent but smelled very stale and the windows do not open. We were cold but had to turn the air on anyway to get rid of the smell. Nice location if you're interested in shopping or being near the train. Otherwise, choose a hotel closer to Fisherman's Warf.

The BART train takes you very close to this hotel from SFO for about $8 per person....much cheaper than a taxi.

could be good with better management

I understand that some guests may not honor the hotel's smoke free policy, but surely the cleaners should be instructed to inform management when they discover that the room they are cleaning reeks of smoke. Similarly, when cleaning the bath and the water doesn't drain properly, they should know that it should be reported to the maintenance crew for fixing. With a bit of communication between staff and management this could be fixed and we would have enjoyed our stay. Rather disappointing.

The hotel is well situated for shopping and close to Union Square where one can hop on the trolley to Fisherman's Wharf. There are plenty places to dine and there's lots of entertainment.

Great place to bring your dog

Although it doesn't look like much from the outside, the lobby and rooms are charming and pretty -- and the staff is super friendly, both to my and my dog. The Union Square location is ideal for seeing the city, and my room (facing the back of the hotel -- not the street) was very quiet. I slept like a baby!!

Loved it

Everyone was so nice they even printed my airline tickets for me. I didn't like paying for parking, but other than that it was wonderful. The bed was so soft and compfy. The was I had to ask for free WiFi it was listed as so when I booked, but they said it was only for certain club members, but she gave it me for free anyway

Had a great time

We had a great stay at the hotel, the location was great. Clean, comfortable, close to Bart/powell stop and close to good restaurants like John's grill for dinner or $8 cab ride to water front. The room was not large but more than adequate, especially for the money. The staff is great! and they have good coffee in the morning and wine tasting in the evening (both free). I totally recommend this hotel for a couple for a get away weekend or other vacation. We will stay here again!Bring your own laptop if you need computer access or can use FedEx across the street from hotel.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

If you fly into Oakland you can take the BART into SF to the hotel for about $6.00 per person each way. You will not need a car. Get off the Bart at Powell St. and walk a few blocks to the hotel on Taylor. The hotel is close to car rental locations for $24.per day if you want a car for a day after you arrive. This will save you a lot in parking fees and airport transportation. Do not take Super Shuttle to or from the airport....you will be sorry.

I took this hotel twice

1. What did you do while you were there? - take rest, surf internet 2. Was there something missing that would have made your stay more enjoyable? - coffee maker 3. How did this compare to previous trips you have taken? - almost the same

excellent choice

Really good coffee in the morning, nice complementary wine from 5 - 6 in the evenings. The bathroom was small with limited shelf space, but that was a minor problem. The beds and pillows were some of the best I have ever experienced in a hotel.

Hotel Serrano

The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. We were very pleased with the location and the dining recommendations of the staff. The restaurant in the hotel was great for a quick meal. I wish we had chosen a place with a pool / hot tub...but this worked quite well.

Nothing but Good

Given that I arrived at the hotel very tired and grumpy from a delayed flight, I expected that I would be rather hard to please. However, once the door to my cab opened at the entrance my mood underwent a rapid transition that began with the doorman getting me to laugh and culminated in crawling into a very clean and comfortable bed for a sound sleep. I have no complaints about this hotel at all. It had a relaxing and enjoyable feel to it and I very much appreciated that the hotel was a well renovated classic. When I was in a bind getting copies of a presentation made, the desk staff ([...] and [...]) were endlessly helpful and cheerfully supportive. I will be looking for a Kimpton Hotel wherever I travel next. Thank you.
