Boutique luxury with a free wine hour within minutes of Union Square
Occupying a beautifully restored 17-story Spanish revival building in the heart of San Francisco, the Serrano Hotel, a Kimpton property, is both fun and sophisticated. The decor displays a healthy dose of whimsy, as the lobby and rooms incorporate vibrant colors and exotic Spanish and Morrocan accents. The on-site restaurant, Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, serves upscale tavern-inspired fare in a hip and modern space. Serrano offers wine hour every evening, as well as in-room spa services.
Highlights
- Hosted evening wine hour
- Union Square and Theater District offer unparalleled shopping and culture
- Upscale tavern-inspired fare at Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, the on-site eatery
Rooms
Oversized beds, high ceilings and colorful accents characterize just about all of the Serrano's 236 rooms, 19 of which are suites. Accommodations come standard with cordless phones, iPod docking stations, honor bars, Aveda bath products and laptop-sized safes. The special "Wicked Suite" features photos of characters from the show "Wicked" and was designed in purple and green. Overnight shoeshines are complimentary. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access is available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).
Features
The Serrano prides itself on fun. Arriving guests can try their luck in the "Check-In Challenge," a friendly card-game competition. If the guest wins, the prize is a free upgrade (when available). If the house wins, the guest is invited to make a voluntary contribution to the local SPCA. The property also owns a library of board games for guests to use in the lobby. Upon request, games are delivered to rooms.
The 24-hour on-site fitness center is complimentary. Spa services ranging from massage to facials and nail work are available in-room. The hotel also hosts an evening wine hour featuring local wines and offers complimentary limousine service to the Financial District on weekday mornings (when available).
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).
Dining
Don’t miss Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, the adjacent (but hotel-operated) restaurant which offers a great menu of upscale tavern-inspired fare and an extensive beer selection.Transportation

Nice
Stayed there for 3 nights. Coffee/tea in the morning. :-) Drinks in the evening. :-) Good service. Quiet. Rooms are not that big, but the bed was comfortable. Would recommend it and stay there again.

Sightseeing tip:
Short walk from hotel
Union Square is only 5 minutes walk. The south part of Taylor St is a bit dodgy and not good to walk alone at night. Walk a block to the east (around the Hilton) then south to go to Market St is better.

Week end in San Francisco
A very nice hotel that has much more charm than the Hilton for instance, while being very centered. We got a suite instead of the double room that we booked, which was very nice. The staff is very good and very helpful.

Stellar Service
We were met at the curbside by a genuinely friendly bell captain who guided us to the front desk. It's a short walk, maybe 30 steps, but those steps are enough to soak in the rich dark woods and hand-carved columns, reminiscent of old hotels of the 30s. There were always at least 5 or 6 staff available, busy helping folks unload, giving directions, answering questions or serving up complimentary wine and beer. The lobby sitting areas are thoughtfully arranged and provide options; you can meet and mingle over a complimentary glass of wine, play one of the various board games strewn about, or, settle into one of the nooks with your favorite book. The elevators are small, but will hold four or so people at a time. Like many other hotels of this age, the hotel's rooms are pretty small. Our room had a large window, however; the first thing we noticed when we entered the room was the sun streaming through the window. The walls were a cheerful yellow, complimented by other warm earth-toned accents. You quickly forget the size of the room. We watched a couple of videos on the large screen TV from our comfy bed. The cash bar was well-stocked and offered a variety of snacks and drinks. The hotel is conveniently located, just a few blocks to the Trolley Cars, Chinatown and Macys! We plan to use the Serrano Hotel on our next visit to San Francisco.

Short walk from hotel
The hotel is blocks from Union Square. Standing in Union Square, you can see Saks 5th Avenue, Cartier, Macy's, ...the list is too long. You are also within walking distance of BART and the Cable Cars, which means, you can visit Fisherman's Wharf, Japan Town, Chinatown, and other tourist spots that offer other shopping options.

Sophisticated and Quaint
The Serrano Hotel is a charming hotel located just blocks from Union Square, public transportation and shopping. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful whether it was assisting with a cab or securing tickets to local attractions. The rooms were nice but a bit small. The wine hour in the lobby was a nice touch and encouraged mingling amongst the guests. I will definitely visit this hotel again!

Nice hotel in Union Sq
Good quality hotel for the price. Location is close to Union Sq, but be careful if you go the 'wrong' direction into skid-row/tenderloin.

Great for one or two nights and if you just want to use the room to sleep.
The hotel was on the border of the shady part of town but the hotel check in staff were quick and friendly. We had a nicely decorated, small, non-smoking room but it smelled as if someone had smoked in it recently. We were only sleeping in the room so we let it go. Also, we were tired from our plane ride so decided to change and get comfortable only to be surprised (half dressed)by someone entering the room with a key! It was hotel employee coming to check the mini-bar. She wasn't made aware that we checked in. We yelped and asked who was there but she didn't speak English very well and didn't respond. She continued to fumble with the door and enter our room. Once in she apologized and said she would return in a moment. She did. And did the same thing! She knocked once and let herself in! Again, we were still half dressed. Of course she apologized again and then went on her way. I understand this employee didn't want to anyone having access to free booze & snacks but that was pushing it. I would recommend this hotel for anyone that's only going to sleep in the room and be out most of the day. It served its purpose for the value.
