Boutique luxury with a free wine hour within minutes of Union Square
Occupying a beautifully restored 17-story Spanish revival building in the heart of San Francisco, the Serrano Hotel, a Kimpton property, is both fun and sophisticated. The decor displays a healthy dose of whimsy, as the lobby and rooms incorporate vibrant colors and exotic Spanish and Morrocan accents. The on-site restaurant, Ponzu, serves up pan-Asian fare in a hip and modern space. Serrano offers wine hour every evening, as well as in-room spa services.
Highlights
- Hosted evening wine hour
- Union Square and Theater District offer unparalleled shopping and culture
- Pan-Asian cuisine at Ponzu, the on-site eatery
Rooms
Oversized beds, high ceilings and colorful accents characterize just about all of the Serrano's 236 rooms, 19 of which are suites. Accommodations come standard with cordless phones, iPod docking stations, honor bars, Aveda bath products and laptop-sized safes. The special "Wicked Suite" features photos of characters from the show "Wicked" and was designed in purple and green. Overnight shoeshines are complimentary. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access is available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).
Features
The Serrano prides itself on fun. Arriving guests can try their luck in the "Check-In Challenge," a friendly card-game competition. If the guest wins, the prize is a free upgrade (when available). If the house wins, the guest is invited to make a voluntary contribution to the local SPCA. The property also owns a library of board games for guests to use in the lobby. Upon request, games are delivered to rooms.
The 24-hour on-site fitness center is complimentary. Spa services ranging from massage to facials and nail work are available in-room. The hotel also hosts an evening wine hour featuring local wines and offers complimentary limousine service to the Financial District on weekday mornings (when available).
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply); all hybrid vehicles receive a 25 percent discount.
Dining
Don't miss Ponzu, the adjacent (but hotel-operated) restaurant with an Asian flare. Dishes, many of which are served Tapas-style, have bright, bold flavors.

Decent location.
The hotel is in a decent location, as it was within walking distance of the Cable Trolley, several restaurants, and shopping. The hotel lobby is cute and comfortable. The staff is accommodating, but can be abrupt and curt when asked simple request such as a late check-out. They made it seem as though it was a major inconvenience. We have stayed in many hotels in New York and Europe, and this was one of the smallest rooms we have ever stayed in. The bathroom was exceptionally tight. As the in room refrigerator kicks on and off it is noisy. The same goes with the heating/AC unit as it sounds like a loud bathroom fan. Opening the ironing board is a challenge, as there were no easily accessible outlets and the board takes up valuable walking space. Even the iron was broken as it was leaking water as I was using it to iron a shirt. The bed was comfortable but we can get that at most hotels. We do not see a reason to stay at this hotel again.

Not worth it at all
This is a 3 star hotel renting rooms at a 5 star price. The location is good, and that's about it. The rooms are very very small with barely any walking space. The hotel, room, and bathroom has an old musky smell. The bathroom is very small and inconvenient. The photos of the hotel are VERY misleading- my room didn't look anything like them. I stayed at the Meridien hotel in the same weekend. The price of Le Meridien was significantly cheaper and the room was huge, nicely decorated, and spotless. I would not stay here again.

Great stay at Serrano
Stayed overnight after a bicycling tour over the Golden Gate Bridge. Great central location. Walking distance to somewhat affordable parking, Union Square shopping, theaters and great restaurants. Fun mini-bar options. Nice afternoon wine reception. Hospitable staff. Work out room looked great, but didn't get to use it.

Very pleasant stay
Optimal location, clean room (not huge but big enough for the two of us, and it was upgraded for free to a king size), comfortable bed, and very nice staff. I forgot my cell charger at home, and the staff found one to borrow. Very nice experience. We will be staying here again next time we are back in San Francisco.

Nice room
We booked the executive suite for my husband, me and our young adult son. We had the king bed, he had the pull out couch. We assumed the hotel would make up his pull out bed but they didn't. In fact we had to ask for linens and blanket and make it up ourselves each night(4). Reception on the 2 TV's wasn't so great. Bath w/ Jacuzzi tub was nice. Rooms were tasteful, clean and windows could be opened which is a plus for me. Sixth floor was quiet. Complimentary coffee, newspapers and cocktail hour appreciated. Location is borderline Tenderloin (as are many of the hotels)so there are many broken people on the street which is a problem for most of SF.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
SF has good reliable public transit. Walk when you can- it's great exercise and you see a lot. Otherwise, take the bus and get a transfer which you can use up to several hour later.

The Serrano is a great place to
The Serrano is a great place to stay in San Francisco. The hotel offers free wine tasting during the week as well as complimentary tea and coffee in the foyer in the mornings. It is close to public transport and shops. I would stay there again!

4 nights at Serrano
Good location. Close to restaurants (Grand Cafe, Dottie's diner etc), bars (bourbon & branch, owl tree) & tons of shopping within 2 blocks. Be careful while venturing further down the hill or west on o'farrell as you'll find yourself in the thick of junky-land. Although mostly harmless, it can be a bit unnerving to be faced with a group of 4 or more junkies after midnight. The hotel itself was great, with a comfy room and great service. There is some construction going on, but we were unaffected by either the noise or the dust.
