Nice touches make this place stand out
The Juggler of Potatoes and Onions Sep 16, 2009
The Serrano Hotel has some nice touches that really make a difference. The staff is friendly and they do little things (which ... many hotels wouldn't care about) that make the stay all the more pleasant. There's complementary wine in the evening in the lobby and coffee/tea and The New York Times in the morning. It has real bath products from Aveda -- not always usual in a hotel with a budget price. The one downside is the location. It is centrally located but for those who are unfamiliar with San Francisco, the city -- and particularly the Tenderloin area near the hotel -- has a very severe homelessness problem. The moment you step outside you are likely to encounter people who obviously have drug or psychological problems that need attention. I'm not a wimp about urban poverty and I often give to beggars, but it is something to be cautious about.

There are plenty of nightlife establishments around the hotel -- some of which are more reputable than others -- but I found that it was worth walking just slightly out of the immediate vicinity to the area north of Geary and east of Van Ness where there is an assortment of youngish bars.

Great service
Dr. Dentist Sep 14, 2009
Very good and friendly service. The hotel is a bit older than I had pictured from the photos that I saw but its San ... Francisco so it's expected. I also wrote that the rooms were small but again, its San Francisco so it's expected as well. Everyone that worked there was friendly and helpful. They were nice enough to let us go past the noon check out until 1:30pm because I had a conference that ended at 12:30pm and I rushed back to check out. No problems with that. Room was kept clean everyday. They have nice thoughtful perks such as an umbrella for your room. I would recommend staying again. My only gripe is that there's no free parking, its either valet or public parking across the street but its SF, I don't imagine too many of the hotels can afford to offer free parking when space is a premium.

great hotel I've booked in San Francisco
Lovely S Aug 27, 2009
Before I came here and saw the hotel I had booked, I had been so worried how it would be. Because I knew that where I was ... going to stay was really important and eventually it would determine my trip anyway. However, as soon as I arrived here and looked over my room, my worries disappeared. The room was spacious, clean, cozy.. I don't know how to explain it, but everything was well equipped! The location of this hotel is pretty great. It is located near the Union Square and Powell st, where the cable car starts and where Bart station is. The cost of staying this hotel was a little expensive for me because I stayed here for by myself and spent 5 days. Other than that, my experience at this hotel was beyond my expectation! I'm very satisfied with what I had while I was staying here.

Comfortable, quiet hotel, nice ambiance
zephyr Jul 28, 2009
The hotel looks small, gives that impression because of the small lobby, but is very cosy and comfortable. The standard room ... is relatively small, especially the bathroom, but I have read other older hotels in the area are featuring similarly sized rooms. Service was great, all personnel were very polite. Prices for incidentals are high, as to be expected. Expensive is also the Ponzy restaurant next to the lobby, but it has nice ambiance. Placed on a street-facing 3rd floor room I was expecting to suffer from noise, but that was not the case at all, soundproofing was exceptional. The older wooden window frame is not accessible, due to another glass placed in front, which I guess contributes to sound isolation. The heater/air condition worked fast and efficiently, it is not noisy but not totally quiet as well. I would doubt it would annoy anyone but the lightest sleepers. The temperature is kept within 1.5 degree Farenheit of the set temperature. The bed and pillows were a bit too soft for my liking, but not to the point I would not consider them anatomic. Complimentary internet connection was problem free, the alarm clock easy to set (following the instructions on top of it) and the HD television placed high and easily viewable, although at the corner of the room. Overall it is a very nice hotel in a great location, quiet and accommodating.

Excellent stay
J-Mac Jul 26, 2009
Stayed here with my girlfriend and we were very pleased. Room was relatively small but clean, good decor, and comfortable ... bed. The A/C was pretty loud because when it turned on, it blasted. That's the only complaint, though. Staff was outstanding, lobby was comfortable, and free WiFi. The location is convenient (near Union Square and trolleys) but just a few blocks away gets pretty sketchy, particularly at night. But if you're a wise traveler, it's not a problem.

Great first hotel for San Francisco
new fan of the kipton family Jul 14, 2009
Small rooms and smaller elevators...missed the convenience of a coffee shop with food in the hotel, but was blessed with many ... local restaurants, so did not starve. Location was good for most activities, and close to public transportation, which is important in the city. Fitness club is small, but nicely appointed. Staff was courteous but not well informed. Had to go to internet for most directions.
Traveler type: Couples
Use the public transportation when possible. It is a treat. The city has the cleanest mass transportation system in the country. We used it for all the jaunts around town. The hotel does offer free wi-fi to its members. Directions were not a problem.

We were attending a conference across the street. Very convienant. Our flight was dreadfully late and arrived after 1 AM. All ... the staff was kind and respectful. Very helpful. Remember though be ready to give out tips for the person that helps with your luggage etc.........please don't forget to remember to leave a tip for the housekeeper when you leave. A very hard worker and very proud of her job. Theres a well stocked over priced refrigerator and snack bar. Watch it it could become a huge added expense.

Don't rent a car in The City. Use their public transportation. Parking is a huge hassle. MUNI and Trolley/Cable Cars you can buy in a pass up to 7 days. The Visitors Center on Market street (close by) you can buy a pass for $59 it includes transportation for all the above plus 6 entrance fees for all sorts of places!! Well worth it!! Cruise on the Bay, Presido, Art Museum, Aquarium,Science Museums all great exhibits. Lots to see. There is shopping everywhere. Resturants of all types and nationalities within walking distance. Average meal that is fresh food between $10-20.

The staff were extremely helpful with directions and restaurant recommendations and reservations. We had tickets to the King ... Tut exhibit at the de Young Museum. When asking for directions they informed us that museums are usually closed Mondays. Even after I checked my tickets they called the museum to double check before we made the trip over! It was also a wonderful touch to come back to the hotel late in the afternoon after an exhaustive day out to come back and be offered wine in the lobby to sit and relax. I HIGHLY recommend this hotel. Very convenient to Union Square

If you need a rental car, wait to book it in the city instead of at the airport. It is about half the price. You can make reservations online and compare prices so availablitiy should be a problem. I rented a car for a week at $42 a day instead over $70+ at the airport. The BART will take you to Union Square for about $6. A cab ride is about $40.
