There goes the neighborhood.

For the conference I was attending, the Renoir was nice and close, but the erotic theater on the other side of Market Street and nearby check cashing establishment didn't attract the nicest neighbors. I didn't feel comfortable walking around at night and was constantly approached by panhandlers. The internet isn't free and the staff seemed indifferent to their guests.

Views of bums & strip club enough said

When we got there they didn't have our reservation and instead of offering a room just told us sorry I can't help you. After calling to a back room and 30-45 min later the reservation appeared. Then they weren't sure about the price. If I knew the hotel was right next to the tenderloins which is a widely known ghetto for being a bad place period I wouldn't have even thought about staying there. Used the valet and when I got my truck back there was 97 miles on it over 1/4 tank gas gone stereo was on some channel I would never listen to and seat leaned back and moved. It's almost impossible to get into a safe overnight parking garage so valet was the best route so I thought. After reading reviews on the parking service the hotel uses my stomach started turning. When we finally got to our room we open the curtains to a view of a strip club and guys standing out on corners and in front of a sandwich shop that stayed open till 1am.

Different then we were used too....

We had never been to San Francisco and the deal we found was well priced. The Hotel lacks many modern conveniences and the location isn't the prettiest but it was easy to get to all the places we needed to go. The staff were great and always helpful. We would probably try a different hotel when going back but wouldn't for a second be opposed to staying at the Renior again.

worst hotel ive ever stayed at

i rarely write any reviews, but felt like this one is really necessary. rude morning-noon staff i paid extra for the double beds, had to argue it out with them because they were trying to give me a 1 bed, because there was only 1 guest. i was the one booking the hotel, but why would i book a 2 bed room and stay there by myself. and they charged me $15 extra per night for the 3rd person that was staying in the room. the location of this hotel is nice, because its really close to the subway and union square is not too far away. however, there were a lot of homeless late at night and it did not feel safe to walk around that area.

Hotel California it's not

The Renoir has pretty much outlived it's once old world charms in the middle of a decidedly seedy neighborhood, affectionately known as the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. My first clue was the all night Market Street adult theatre direclty across the street. The hotel and the room were clean, at least, but besides somewhat newer furniture and carpets, the rooms were the same as they probably were 40 years ago, just more layers of paint. They'll probably never do a major remodel, it would cost too much to remove the asbestos and the lead paint. No air conditioning at all, just a fan and open the widow to the noise below, or a steam radiator for heat. They did at least have cable tv and wi-fi. The staff was always friendly and helpful, just not very many of them ever around. Seemed more like a hostel, as there were mostly foreign guests, quite a lot of younger couples, not a family sort of place at all. If all you want is a bed for the night that's close in the city to make getting around easy, it's a good choice, just don't expect the Four Seasons-or even the Holiday Inn.

The Full Monty

Hotel Staff friendly and helpful. Room was clean, old, sufficient. 1 elevator for 8 floors - takes at least 15 minutes when busy. Window looked out over Market Street and the Nude Show across the street. The Friday & Saturday Night Club down stairs explained the ear plugs in the night stand. Club opens at 11pm and rocks the building! Sirens, Cable Cars, homeless people yelling & screaming across the street at eachother & bathing nude in the public fountains next to the Farmers Market was quite the show. After dark stay away from Little Siagon north of hotel. The $2 Trolley ride to Peir 39 and back was a pleasure. Perfect place to get all of your souveniers and enjoy some Crab & Seafood. The food down at Little Joe's was tasty, as are a few of the small cafe's around the State Buildings.and Opera & Ballet House. Bring your own blanket, as bedding consists of a nice down comforter with a thin sheet and mattress pad under it. Privacy in bathrooms is unique - as light coming through vent above shower reveals adjoining room bathroom vent.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

The transportation throughout the San Francisco area is wonderful. Either by public transit or private cab, do some research ahead of time and know what goes where. For as little a $2ea you get to almost anywhere you need to go. With a little planning, you can eat, drink and have fun.

Good location w/ unavailable interneet!!

Since it was my first time to San Francisco, I found the hotel convenient in terms of location and cleanness. However I wasn't completely satisfied due to the unavailable wireless internet, which I think should be available with no extra charges for the hotel guests such as other hotels. I had to go to the bakery on the corner several times a day just to check my email! The staff was friendly, helpful and cooperative.
