Historic hotel, centrally located

Ideally located next to Montgomery Street BART station for this storied pre-1906 hotel. Truly grand in all respects although the modest sized rooms, additional wi-fi charges, and limited soundproofing between rooms might be a problem for some. That said, this is an exceptional hotel experience.

Great location and service- overall recommend!

Location: walking distance to wharf or Little Italy (long walk, but that is SF), financial district and Union Square. Clean, nice area of town. Staff: Very nice, professional staff. Definitely attempt to maintain a European atmosphere. We are a younger couple, but staff treated us as well as the typically older clientele. Atmosphere: Very nice- but definitely a historical, antique style. Seems to aim for French-bourgeoisie/provincial style. Starwood Property so there is a strong brand behind the hotel- plus you can earn points. Room: Clean and sufficient. Not "modern", but rooms have been updated. Definitely a nice, well maintained property (did not feel "old" like other SF hotels). We were in a basic, King bedroom. Had a fridge- always a plus after Little Italy pizza!

Money-saving tip: Long walk from hotel

If you are Nor-Cal local and don't NEED a car- take the Baylink ferry into the wharf. Comfortable and beautiful approach to the city from the water. Rode from Vallejo- cheaper than toll + gas +parking (big cost in SF) and saved headache + time of commute.

Terrible

Hi, the halls of hotel were constantly full of dirty plates; all day long. Some of the furniture in the hotel were damaged; the tv was blurry; there was visible mold in the bathroom tile; the shower/tub did not drain properly. Should I go on??? this is a 4 or 5 star hotel? Hardly.

Very Nice.

It was a good experience overall. Once you cross the $200 mark I feel you should be getting excellent attention to detail. Here are the flaws that prevented me from rating this hotel higher: - Checked in 6:30 pm Saturday evening. There was one person working at the desk, and there was a wait. - Door keys didn't work (and other people on line were waiting to resolve the same issue). No apology offered. - Found dirty washcloth over shower curtain. Stray hairs on floor. -No hair dryer in the room. - Wifi were pay-per-computer and expensive. - Walls were thin. Drunken guests in hall eventually subdued by hotel mgmt. Could hear other guests coughing etc. The location was great and it's a nice big old school hotel; there are a lot of weddings etc. so the noise issue may be a constant. If you want a good fallback hotel this is it.

The Ferry Building is awesome for grazing. It doesn't really get going until 10 a.m. on Sundays.

The Palace treats you like a queen

I stayed 2 days here and had a wonderful time. The Holiday Tea was elegant, the staff very attentive and the location perfect for Muni or BART to get around town.

If you can use BART or MUNI for transportation it is a short ride to downtown or the Embarcadero.
