Quick check-in, so comfortable and quiet we almost slept the day away. This place is not annoying, pretentious, or jam-packed ... with people. If you want immediate access to loud, shiny, and tourist-y things, this is not really the place for you. Good for a quick jaunt to the city. Close enough to everything but far enough away. Park in one of the overnight garages if you're not planning on using your car for the day rather than pay the steep valet charge.
--HP, San Diego, CA Nov 5, 2009
Traveling into San Francisco can be quite expensive, especially when you bring your car. The parking fees charged by hotels are just outrageous! So, don't bring it! We took BART (which offers free overnight parking on weekends) and paid NOTHING for parking for three nights (Fri-Sun, return Mon). We used the money saved to cab around like a couple of Kennedys, and still saved money over all! We even cabbed it back from Berkeley over the bridge after a concert at the Hearst Greek Theatre, for about $35, and just completely skipped all those hassles of parking, DUI, worrying about traffic... What a way to go! Consider it next time you come into The City for a getaway weekend.

Great San Francisco Getaway...
Huskers Nov 13, 2009
Our first stay @ The Orchard. We have stayed @ most all of the large major hotels in the city. This was a great 5day/4night ... "Getaway Hotel" in a good & safe location at a very fair price... close to shopping, bars, restaurants, cable car, etc. The lobby is small & very unimpressive but the rooms are very nice & comfortable. The bar & restaurant are nice but not a destination. We would definitely stay there on a return visit to SF.

Top value - A jewel in San Francisco
Francisco Moita Nov 9, 2009
A true jewel! Excellent location - a block or two from Chinatown and Union Square - but, no noise! Hard to believe, but very ... true! Rooms are spacious, clean, and very comfortable. I also have to mention the fantastic mini-bar and that you have free internet in your room (wi-fi in my case). I'll sum it up by saying that our 5 nights at the Orchard Hotel (not the Garden Orchard, although they are very close and owned by the same people) made our visit to San Francisco that much more memorable! The only thing that went wrong is that they missed our wake up call (no problem because we had the cell phone alarm) and the shower could do with a little more water pressure (and now, I am really being picky!)

The hotel is in a great location- close by to Chinatown, Union Square, Powell cable car. Also, if looking to get out of the ... city for the day, there's a rental car company just one block down from the hotel. Also, there are some very good restaurants located near the hotel. The room was as advertised. Very clean and nicely decorated- very spa like. We arrived early at 10:30 am and we were able to check in early without charge.

Excellence a few blks. above Union Sq
Grumpy Older Bone-tatch Sep 28, 2009
We loved staying here, close to Union Square shopping, galleries, and theatre. Albeit somewhat pricey, it was still a good ... value considering the convenient location, absolutely superb staff, and wonderful room. The room was spacious for a standard, with very comfy beds and clean all around. Nice flat panel TV with a GOOD remote control, excellent, well-laid-out bathroom, and all other amenities as you would want them. Room service breakfasts were promptly delivered and generally was quite enjoyable. Pretty impressive for a "smaller" hotel. We will definitely stay here again but would love to get a more discounted room rate by reserving a bit more in advance.

The hotel room was huge and comfortable. The Orchard is environmentally friendly and would only wash your sheets if you ... asked as well as your towels which I think is a nice option. Also, it was centrally located near Union Square and you could easily walk to Chinatown or catch the bus or trolly to North Beach (5 min) and Fisherman's Wharf (8 min away).
Traveler type: Couples
My boyfriend and I bought a pass on one of the many bus tours that the city has and cruised around on it the first day to see the sights and get our bearings, we then bought a map and bought a bus pass and took that everywhere, the drivers rarely check the tickets so one pass lasts all day (same usually goes for the tour pass)

The location was absolutely GREAT! This was our first trip to San Fransisco. The first full day we walked down to the SF ... MOMA. Afterwards we walked up and through Chinatown..and kept on walking...we walked up to Coit Tower...then walked to the top of Lombard St. Finally after walking what felt like forever...hopped on the trolley car and rod down to Fisherman's Wharf. Had a great dinner and rode the trolley back to Bush St. and walked the 30 feet or so to the hotel door. The staff at the Orchard was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the area. The rooms were clean..extremely clean. I've been grossed out at other hotels by small details..and this time I'm extremely happy to say this place had no "gross" out factor for me or my husband.

Uncle Vito's Pizza is almost kitty corner to the Orchard Hotel. It was a great deal...and great pizza. Nothing super fancy and I think one of our cheapest dinners there. The trolley cafe that is about 1/2 block down from the hotel was also a decent breakfast place.

the location of this hotel is what i liked most. its only 2 blocks from union square and a few more to the shopping center. ... public transportation is very useful in sf. you can get to the cable cars right outside and the bus stop isn't too far away either. the room appeared clean, including the restroom and bed. these are both important clean spots in the hotel for me. the staff was very very helpful and very willing to help with all my inquiries. this ranged from internet problems, to parking, to tourist attractions. received great information in all counts. my only concern was the parking fees - they were pretty high. i understand that parking may be limited in the city, but if i'm staying at the hotel, shouldn't it be less expensive?

Natalie Aug 13, 2009
The location was perfect. On the first day we walked to Chinatown and the Ferry building. We ate at the Slanted Door, which ... was expensive Vietnamese fusion, but well worth it. We stopped off at the free Pacific Heritage Museum, which had a section of the first vault and art from contemporary Chinese artisits. We then drove to Ocean Beach and walked. It was so close to public transportation. We hopped on the F train to Castro & Noe, had a great dinner at La Mediterannee, and went to the punk bar Lucky 13. The second day we went to the Academy of Science. It had an amazing planetarium show, rainforest exhibit, penguins (feeding time was packed), aquarium, and a 3D bug movie. For dinner we went to Zarzuela, an incredible tapas restaurant. On the third day we went to Cafe de la Presse (on Grant, in front of the Gateway to Chinatown) and we had a delicious French breakfast and coffee. We then walked to Pier 39. It's a long walk, but the F train was packed so we just decided to try it. It was a good workout. Pier 39 was a tourist trap, so we hopped on the F train back to Union Square. We ate dinner in Union Square at Biscuit & Blues, a good Southern place. We didn't stay for the live music. We checked out the bar at John's Grill and wished that we had eaten there (seafood looked amazing). Next time! Then we hung out at the Chelsea Place bar a few doors down from the hotel. It was small but quaint. The room was great. Even though we had a room next to the elevator I barely heard it. The king bed was very comfortable and the room was a good size. The room was facing Union Square, but we saw a rooftop, the Marriott, and the Walgreen's on the corner (it's the city!). We parked at the Sutter-Stockton garage because it was cheaper (especially if you go in after 5pm and exit before 8am). We will definitely go there again. We got a great deal on Orbitz!

If shopping is your thing, walk 3 blocks down Powell street to the largest Macy's that I've ever seen! From there in all other directions, you will find tons of more shopping, including a rather large mall a few blocks further down on Powell. When you're done for the day, just return up the hill with the cable car!
--Hula girl, Honolulu, Hawaii Aug 7, 2009
Definitely pick up a Muni pass (we did a 3 day) and after taking a classic trolley ride down the wharf, use the other types of transportations available like the electric buses and such. you'll get there much quickler than the trolleys, but it's fun to ride once or twice.
--Crab cracker, Spokane, WA Aug 6, 2009
this hotel close to lots of restaurants and shopping both inexpensive to the high end places in Union Sq. area. If planning to tour the city, get the Muni-pass so you can take any type of public transit, except BART, with it. We used it alot and got our money's worth for sure.
