Eco-friendly hotel near Union Square and steps from cable cars

As its name suggests, the residential-style Orchard Hotel is all about the environment. The boutique hotel was San Francisco's first hotel to become LEED-EB certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, and it continues to tout a number of eco-friendly programs today. The hotel was built in 2000, and rooms still feel brand-new. Daffodil, the on-site restaurant, serves a variety of cuisines from all over the world.

Highlights
  • Eco-friendly programs and organic bath products
  • Walk to shopping at Union Square and Westfield Centre mall
  • Complimentary business and fitness centers
Rooms

Relax and rejuvenate in one of the Orchard's 104 rooms, including nine suites. Armoires feature state-of-the-art DVD and CD entertainment centers and 27-inch flat-screen televisions. Guests will find large work desks, complimentary high-speed Internet and Wi-Fi and fully stocked mini-bars. Designed specifically for the Orchard, most of the furniture is made of wood from Bali. Bathrooms boast organic bath products.

Features

The Orchard opened in 2000, making it one of the newest boutique hotels in San Francisco. When it opened, it became the city's first LEED-EB certified hotel. Since then, the property has collected a number of other accolades for its commitment to eco-friendly practices. The Orchard continues to refine its approach to green.

Art is a common theme inside; a bronze-cast statue entitled "Spring Awakening" welcomes visitors to the lobby, and paintings and photographs in hallways upstairs are from local artists.

While the on-site fitness is complimentary, guests also have access to a handful of independent fitness facilities within walking distance (fees apply).

Dining

Daffodil, the eclectic on-site eatery, pairs seasonal and local organic cuisine with wines from all over the world. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner only, though a happy hour menu spotlights a number of tapas-style small plate dishes.

Great location

My husband and I really loved our stay at the Orchard. They were able to accomidate us with an early check-in. All of the staff was friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. The location of the hotel was perfect. We had a general store, laundry facility, cable car, and restaurants less than a block away.

Renting a vehicle is definitely not necessary in San Francisco. Cabs are readily available and public transportation can get you were you need to be. If you are not into walking up hill, I would advise that a multiple day pass be purchased for the cable car as one way trips can get spendy and the passes are more reasonable.

Makes You Want to Come Back for MORE !

Hotels location is extremely convenient to a lot of restaurants, Chinatown, Union Square and all transportation making it easy to either take the sightseeing buses, cable cars to simply walk (which we did a lot of !).We would take the "Hop on Hop off" buses to a certain point and then would walk the rest- bring good shoes ! Front desk staff was super friendly and helpful no matter what time of day or what you asked them. Had minor problem with sink in bathroom , called front desk and maintenance was there within 2 minutes to fix problem. We definitely would stay there again if we are lucky enough to be able to get back to SF !

Decent central place

Good staff, bed, shower, decent sound proofing. Free, but poor internet. Central location for catching city bus or trolley to anywhere. If coming from BART note that it's five-six blocks with the last block very up hill.

Excellence a few blks. above Union Sq

We loved staying here, close to Union Square shopping, galleries, and theatre. Albeit somewhat pricey, it was still a good value considering the convenient location, absolutely superb staff, and wonderful room. The room was spacious for a standard, with very comfy beds and clean all around. Nice flat panel TV with a GOOD remote control, excellent, well-laid-out bathroom, and all other amenities as you would want them. Room service breakfasts were promptly delivered and generally was quite enjoyable. Pretty impressive for a "smaller" hotel. We will definitely stay here again but would love to get a more discounted room rate by reserving a bit more in advance.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Traveling into San Francisco can be quite expensive, especially when you bring your car. The parking fees charged by hotels are just outrageous! So, don't bring it! We took BART (which offers free overnight parking on weekends) and paid NOTHING for parking for three nights (Fri-Sun, return Mon). We used the money saved to cab around like a couple of Kennedys, and still saved money over all! We even cabbed it back from Berkeley over the bridge after a concert at the Hearst Greek Theatre, for about $35, and just completely skipped all those hassles of parking, DUI, worrying about traffic... What a way to go! Consider it next time you come into The City for a getaway weekend.

So quiet we almost slept all day

Quick check-in, so comfortable and quiet we almost slept the day away. This place is not annoying, pretentious, or jam-packed with people. If you want immediate access to loud, shiny, and tourist-y things, this is not really the place for you. Good for a quick jaunt to the city. Close enough to everything but far enough away. Enjoyed the peace and quiet after faring through the noise of the day.

Great Price and location

The room was very clean and quiet and beds were very comfy. The shower products for shampoo and bath soaps were awesome and nice scents. The eateries and shops all were within walking distance and china town within a short walk. Bart was a short walk. I was impressed with price and decor was very nice. I will stay again and also highly recommend to all my frinds.

Very comfortable in great neighborhood

The room was very large, with a great bathroom, and huge shower (no tub, but we don't use them usually, so it didn't bother us). The only problem was that the toilet flush was running, and even though we mentioned it to one of the front desk person, nothing was done to fix it while we were there. The bed was very comfortable. Nice sheets and pillows. The free internet in the room is very nice, and the staff is very friendly. Also just at the corner is a cable car stop. Just jump on it as it passes to go over the hill to Fisherman's wharf! We had a great stay, and would definitely stay there again next time we go to San Francisco.
