Eco-friendly hotel near Union Square and steps from cable cars
As its name suggests, the residential-style Orchard Hotel is all about the environment. The boutique hotel was San Francisco's first hotel to become LEED-EB certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, and it continues to tout a number of eco-friendly programs today. The hotel was built in 2000, and rooms still feel brand-new. Daffodil, the on-site restaurant, serves a variety of cuisines from all over the world.
Highlights
- Eco-friendly programs and organic bath products
- Walk to shopping at Union Square and Westfield Centre mall
- Complimentary business and fitness centers
Rooms
Relax and rejuvenate in one of the Orchard's 104 rooms, including nine suites. Armoires feature state-of-the-art DVD and CD entertainment centers and 27-inch flat-screen televisions. Guests will find large work desks, complimentary high-speed Internet and Wi-Fi and fully stocked mini-bars. Designed specifically for the Orchard, most of the furniture is made of wood from Bali. Bathrooms boast organic bath products.
Features
The Orchard opened in 2000, making it one of the newest boutique hotels in San Francisco. When it opened, it became the city's first LEED-EB certified hotel. Since then, the property has collected a number of other accolades for its commitment to eco-friendly practices. The Orchard continues to refine its approach to green.
Art is a common theme inside; a bronze-cast statue entitled "Spring Awakening" welcomes visitors to the lobby, and paintings and photographs in hallways upstairs are from local artists.
While the on-site fitness is complimentary, guests also have access to a handful of independent fitness facilities within walking distance (fees apply).
Dining
Daffodil, the eclectic on-site eatery, pairs seasonal and local organic cuisine with wines from all over the world. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner only, though a happy hour menu spotlights a number of tapas-style small plate dishes.

Good Boutique Hotel
Good-sized rooms, new furnishings, well-appointed, higher-end finishes in the bathrooms. Not a lot of foot traffic. Comfortable bed (if you like them soft). Free high-speed wi-fi internet. Great location--just a few short blocks to Union Square on one end, and Chinatown on the other. Very close to the middle of everything, without having to be in the middle of everything. Initial room had problems with heating so transferred to a new room, which worked-out just fine. Attentive and responsive staff.

Short walk from hotel
Steps to all the great name-brand shopping of Union Square, without having to be in the center of traffic. Great, neighborhood-type restaurants (i.e. not the tourist-traps of Union square) up and down the street. A few minutes walk to Chinatown.

Amazing Location
Everything is at proximity. Cable car, the wharf, union square, chinatown, and even strip clubs. when I got back from outside, the room was only superficially cleaned. Wet towels were on the rack again, trash can was not emptied, and it was messy. Awful housekeeping. I notified the front desk but they don't seem to care or try to compensate such discomfort. They only say oh we are sorry. Well, sorry won't do a thing. I would have given 8~9 out of 10 for the stay if not for such incidents. And the incidents continued for three nights.

clean, friendly, well located hotel.
My daughter and I loved this hotel. It was close to union square, nob hill, north beach and the cable car lines. it was an easy walk to the embarcadero too. The staff was very friendly and eager to help out with directions and recommendations. Our room was clean and nicely appointed with a good size bathroom. Also, the room was quiet which is nice for the guests with jet lag. I would stay at the Orchard again and recommend it to friends.

Great hotel, great location
Large room, blocks from Union Square, cable car right at your door. Bathroom and bath items very luxurious. Very good breakfast. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel but it looked wonderful and we heard others at the bar saying it was excellent.

Very Clean, Great Location
We totally enjoyed our stay at the Orchard Hotel in San Francisco. The room very clean, well decorated, and very quiet. The bed was comfortable and when we asked for a blanket instead of the comforter the staff brought one right up. The doorman was extremely helpful in giving directions, suggesting restaurants, arranging transportation back to airport, etc, etc. The location was great. The cable car, which takes you to Fisherman's Wharf, goes right by the hotel at the corner. Also, It's an easy 2 block walk to China Town and also only 2 blocks to Union Square. Lastly, the shopping at Union Square is fantastic! And if you don't want to carry your packages back up the hill to the hotel, you can catch the cable car! I would suggest buying a MUNI transportation pass when you get there. You can purchase for 1 day, 3 days, a week, etc. The pass gives you unlimited assess to the cable cars, street cars, and city bus system. All in all, a great weekend, I will plan on staying at the Orchard Hotel again!

There's a little cafe next door to the hotel that offers a very good breakfast for under $10.00. And we never had to wait to get in.

Excellent location and bang for your buck!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Orchard Hotel. The entrance to Chinatown is just one block down the road and a cable car stop is litterally in front of the hotel. Market Street is within three blocks and there are numerous little neighborhood bars and cafes close by. Parking fees are $34 per night (which is average), however, you can park down the road in a parking garage (Stockton Rd.) for slightly less. Overall a great experience.

Peace of mind !
Lots of places get mixed reviews. This place seems to receive consistently good reviews. All good things written were confirmed with my experience. Very comfortable, clean, and quiet. The room seemed plenty big. Many reviewers complain about the size of hotels in downtown areas. No complaints here. Nice size bathroom, closet, bed etc. Continental Breakfast is worth $10 a person per nite although provided FREE. Free dvd rentals is bonus if u r not into the nightlife scene. .

Didn't think union square, just 2 blocks south provided much to offer for nite time dining. Fine for lunch though. However, would recommend going to wharf, china town, financial district, and/or north beach (for italian).

Very comfortable in great neighborhood
The room was very large, with a great bathroom, and huge shower (no tub, but we don't use them usually, so it didn't bother us). The only problem was that the toilet flush was running, and even though we mentioned it to one of the front desk person, nothing was done to fix it while we were there. The bed was very comfortable. Nice sheets and pillows. The free internet in the room is very nice, and the staff is very friendly. Also just at the corner is a cable car stop. Just jump on it as it passes to go over the hill to Fisherman's wharf! We had a great stay, and would definitely stay there again next time we go to San Francisco.

Good Location
Stayed here for 2007 MLB All-Star Game. Location was good - about 20 minute walk to ATT Park and about 30 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. The walk to ATT Park goes right though the major shopping area which is nice. Walk to Fisherman's Wharf is VERY HILLY so be prepared! Amenities are nice...room is decent size for San Fran. We did not eat at the hotel so can't comment on that. Internet in rooms is NOT wireless, FYI. Nice bathrooms and clean. Rooms were made up instantly after we left them each day. Turn down service at night (but no chocolates!)

San Francisco Get Away
The Orchard on Union Square was a great choice for our San Francisco vacation. From a charming staff always available to assist you, to the spacious rooms and luxurious bath it provided a great get away. The rooms include CD/DVD players with a free selection of movies at check-in. The high-speed internet access in the lobby enabled us to check our e-mail. A continental breakfast is included in the rates. My wife loved the location because it was within walking distance to shopping and adjacent to the Powell Street Cable car.
