Historic Nob Hill hotel blends old and new with top-notch steakhouse

The past is new again at this circa-1926 hotel atop Nob Hill. Originally built as a bank, the property features classic stonework, stained glass and decorative touches. The lobby is adorned with Italian marble, rich fabrics and Austrian crystal chandeliers. Guestrooms mirror this classic elegance. The hotel is within walking distance of the city's storied cable cars. Bob's Steak & Chop House, the on-site restaurant, has established itself as one of the best steakhouses in the entire city. The property also offers complimentary guided walking tours once a week.

Highlights
  • Florentine Renaissance architecture
  • Walking distance to the Financial District, Union Square and North Beach
  • Succulent steak at Bob's Steak & Chop House
  • Complimentary guided walking tours
Rooms

Accommodations (362 rooms, including 20 suites) feature high ceilings and crown molding -- common design elements from the 1920s. Rooms also come standard with flat-screen televisions, plush down comforters, marble bathrooms and robes. Special GetFit guest rooms also feature treadmills and other exercise equipment. One of the suites, the Kid Fantasy Suite, includes a room of bunk beds, bean-bag chairs and games. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award.

Technically, the property has existed since 1926, though it served as a bank until the 1980s. To put this history into context for guests, third-party guides lead complimentary walking tours around the property and surrounding neighborhoods. The hotel also provides family-specific walking tours, geared toward visitors with young kids.

All guests receive complimentary access to a huge fitness center with state-of-the-art exercise equipment. The hotel also provides shuttle service to Harding Park and Presidio Golf Course, the two closest greens (fees apply).

Enjoy a meal at Bob's Steak & Chop House, which specializes in corn-fed Midwestern prime beef but offers a variety of fish and vegetarian selections as well.

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply). There is free newspaper in the lobby.

good choice

The Omni has generously sized (by SF standards) rooms and baths. They are well appointed, but not lavish. Its location in the financial district is a short walk to Union Square, Nob Hill, The Ferry Building , and some excellent restaurants. The cable cars run right in front of the hotel, yet we never heard them in the room. The hotel is very quiet; there was no noise from halls or other rooms.

Omni Hotel

Our first overnight stay in SF. Based off of everyone else's reviews I would have to agree. Location was great! A few blocks from almost everything. Staff was very friendly. I actually had left something behind and housekeeping actually went through the trash to locate it for me.

Coming home to a quiet, comfy room after an entire day of sightseeing/shopping was awesome. You wake up the next morning recharged and ready to explore MORE! Union Square, china town, ferry building are all within walking distance which made for endless shopping and eating options.

Great Staff

The staff was extremely friendly and attentive, one of the best I've encountered at a hotel. The rooms were thoroughly cleaned, with turn-down service offered nightly. If it weren't for the location -- I wouldn't stay in the Financial District again. There's zero nightlife -- I would absolutely return to the Omni. It's a great bargain for a 4-star hotel. They would definitely need to replace carpeting, update fixtures and amenities to gain another star, but my suite was large and comfortable.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Don't believe the hotel's description of location; you ARE in the Financial District, which means everything in the immediate vicinity is completely dead on the weekends. However, you're only a 10 minute walk to the Ferry Building, where there's an expansive bazar, including dining options, farmers market and craft tables. However, many of these stalls are closed on the weekend.

A great place to stay!

The staff at the Omni was exceptional. They made us feel immediately welcome. They had a recommendation or two whenever we asked for things to see or places to eat. The Omni is pretty grand, but there was no snootiness whatsoever--even when we walked into marble tiled lobby soaking wet and wearing cheap plastic rain ponchos. The rooms and amenities are pretty typical of a quality hotel. The staff upgraded our room at no additional charge so we ended up with a nice view overlooking Chinatown and North Beach all the way to the Golden Gate. Ultimately it is always the staff that makes a hotel great and this proved to be the case at the Omni.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

We had an excellent dinner at Cafe Maria, just off Washington Square. The Caprese Salad is "to die for." It's a pleasant 15 min walk from the Omni and the prices are very reasonable for such quality dining. Eat breakfast at one of the many excellent cafes on Columbus Street.

San Fran vacation

This was our first stay at an Omni Hotel but it won't be our last. From the moment we arrived until we left we were treated royally. Decor is from another time period but is fresh and clean. We would have liked a small fridge in the room but that was all. Everything was spotlessly clean. Our only complaint: we didn't get "sweet dreams" candy every night!

Take the 30-45 minute drive to see Muir Woods. Don't let GPS or mapquest fool you. The distance is short and well worth the drive from the city.
