Historic Nob Hill hotel blends old and new with top-notch steakhouse

The past is new again at this circa-1926 hotel atop Nob Hill. Originally built as a bank, the property features classic stonework, stained glass and decorative touches. The lobby is adorned with Italian marble, rich fabrics and Austrian crystal chandeliers. Guestrooms mirror this classic elegance. The hotel is within walking distance of the city's storied cable cars. Bob's Steak & Chop House, the on-site restaurant, has established itself as one of the best steakhouses in the entire city. The property also offers complimentary guided walking tours once a week.

Highlights
  • Florentine Renaissance architecture
  • Walking distance to the Financial District, Union Square and North Beach
  • Succulent steak at Bob's Steak & Chop House
  • Complimentary guided walking tours
Rooms

Accommodations (362 rooms, including 20 suites) feature high ceilings and crown molding -- common design elements from the 1920s. Rooms also come standard with flat-screen televisions, plush down comforters, marble bathrooms and robes. Special GetFit guest rooms also feature treadmills and other exercise equipment. One of the suites, the Kid Fantasy Suite, includes a room of bunk beds, bean-bag chairs and games. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award.

Technically, the property has existed since 1926, though it served as a bank until the 1980s. To put this history into context for guests, third-party guides lead complimentary walking tours around the property and surrounding neighborhoods. The hotel also provides family-specific walking tours, geared toward visitors with young kids.

All guests receive complimentary access to a huge fitness center with state-of-the-art exercise equipment. The hotel also provides shuttle service to Harding Park and Presidio Golf Course, the two closest greens (fees apply).

Enjoy a meal at Bob's Steak & Chop House, which specializes in corn-fed Midwestern prime beef but offers a variety of fish and vegetarian selections as well.

Great Hotel

We stayed at this hotel for New Year's Eve. It was within close walking distance to the Ferry Building, so that was a plus. The room was a little small for 4 people, but it worked out alright. Can't really beat the location and the staff was very helpful and accommodating.

Dining tip: In Hotel

The hotel bar/restaurant is very pricey. We spent $120 for 4 plates of appetizers which were just okay and one round of drinks. A better plan would be to head down the street to the Tadich Grill.

Well Worth a Stay

This is a hotel that makes you feel pampered, but with not a smidgen of snooty attitude. As the doorman said, while helping us maneuver our suitcases to check in, "I'm here to help you." He really meant it. There seems to be a culture of service and "we're here to make your stay enjoyable" that is visible not only with the doorman, but with the people behind the counter, the extremely helpful concierge, the room service people who couldn't do enough for you and the waitress in the restaurant. The hotel is well-situated - just a few blocks from the Ferry Station market, the transportation that will get you to Fisherman's Wharf, and the Embarcadero financial district.

Incredible Service

The staff here is incredibly friendly and helpful. My room was impeccably clean and simple nuances like having the front door opened for me when I left or came back was really the icing on the cake. It sits at the bottom of Nob Hill kind of off the main drag and for that I was eternally grateful. Nothing worse than not being able to get a drink at your hotel's bar after a long day of meetings.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

It's a short walk to the cable car. Hop on and head towards Fisherman's Wharf for an all-you-can chose from deep fried seafood extravaganza and incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

Beautiful hotel near financial district

When we arrived the room smelled musty. We asked to change (we had booked a suite) but there were no more available. They immediately sent up housekeeping who cleaned out the air filter and sprayed a room spray. It seemed to help and the hotel offered us two free breakfasts since they could not change our room. They were very helpful, friendly and accommodating.

good choice

The Omni has generously sized (by SF standards) rooms and baths. They are well appointed, but not lavish. Its location in the financial district is a short walk to Union Square, Nob Hill, The Ferry Building , and some excellent restaurants. The cable cars run right in front of the hotel, yet we never heard them in the room. The hotel is very quiet; there was no noise from halls or other rooms.

Omni Hotel

Our first overnight stay in SF. Based off of everyone else's reviews I would have to agree. Location was great! A few blocks from almost everything. Staff was very friendly. I actually had left something behind and housekeeping actually went through the trash to locate it for me.
