quirky little nook in the heart of san francisco
Hotel was quirky, fun...perfect for what I needed. Comfortable and clean although smaller than I expected. The place has lots of charm and character while still providing all the necessities. Convenient to a downtown wedding I attended and walking distance to ... everywhere!

a step back in time!
The hotel was quaint and very old. The elevator was one of those old gated lifts from the early 19th century. Everything was nice, but the hallway smelled VERY musty, and the walls were paper-thin. The continental breakfast was good, and the front desk staff was very accomodating with directions and even got me some tea when all that was left was coffee.

Try the Moroccan restaurant two blocks away. It's called Aicha, and they give you delicious bang for your buck! It's BYOB, so head to Napa beforehand and stock up!

The last option
It fulfills the basic need of providing a place to crash in at night for tourists. If you are expecting more than that, then look for other places. I did read not-so-good reviews online but I wanted to spend minimal for a place which I would only use for sleeping so can't complain much. Forget about the garish look and feel of the place but it can be atleast a bit cleaner. The basin in the bathroom was clogging, the floor and bed both seemed alive with creaking and squeaking. :) Maybe they would have fixed the basin if I would have notified them but I always forgot. Otherwise the staff was helpful.

Good!
Got there really early (8am) and couldn't check-in. Got upgraded free to rooftop penthouse. Weren't actually able to check-in until 4pm (instead of 3pm). Clean and quiet, easy walking to transit. Free coffee and wine every evening (!!). Slowish elevator- but really cool. I would go back.

fully restored?
Beware of the parking fee--$47 per night!!! Stained glass, maybe. Stained carpet for sure. Old, but not very nice. Small rooms and baths. It was quiet at night. Elevator not reliable. Walking distance to Opera, Symphony, etc.

Great Experience staff was very helpful
Well we had a wonderful stay, the staff was extremly helpful with suggestions on how to get around the city. They suggested we get our MUNI passes. We were all over San Francisco with no problem they called us a cab and made sure we were on time for our Alcatraz Tour. The hotel was very clean. We would stay there again.

Good Value for Money
Rooms very small, but nice enough for the money. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Continental breakfast disappointing, but 24 hour coffee was good, and there is a refrigerator and microwave in room. Location is not far from Union Square, but next time I'd stay closer to Castro.

Nob Hill Hotel
We chose this hotel because of it's relative low cost and location. Other reviews were mostly positive and some aspects of the property were very good as noted by others. Our experience was not very good from the beginning. We arrived slightly early and asked if our room was ready, we were told it was not and to come back at the stated 3pm check-in time. When we returned, the room was still not ready. When we were finally told we could check in, the room we were given had not been cleaned from the previous occupants. The bed was unmade, and there were beer bottles and food containers strewn around the room. When we informed the front desk, they wanted to make us wait until this room could be cleaned. We protested and were finally given a different (upgraded) room. The rest of the stay was thankfully uneventful. The property does have quirky charm and the room was comfortable. What we found lacking was the ability of the staff to offer much information about the area. We asked for recommendations on dining, transportation, etc. and did not get much help.

Pleasant
For the price, the hotel was quite comfortable, with friendly staff and just about all that you'd expect from a hotel room. Included was complimentary breakfast every morning (toast, cereal, croissants, coffee/tea and juice), free wine tasting in the evening, and a small indoor fitness center. I also got a free upgrade to a larger sized bed, and was able to check in early. The staff were friendly and helpful with directions, as well. When I arrived in my room (possibly because I checked in 2 hours early) the trash from the previous tenants had not yet been cleared, but I notified the front desk and it was taken care of immediately. The carpet in the room also looked somewhat stained by things like coffee or dirt, but did not have any visible gunk or gum of any sort on it. The bed was comfortable, and although the room and bathroom were small, it was decorated in an attractive vintage manner. Overall, it was a nice place to stay for my brief trip to SF. Its location in the heart of downtown and the friendliness of the staff made it a great place to stay for my trip. Just be aware that you won't find quite the same level of room services as larger hotels, and that the location is not in the best neighborhood (though not terrible either).

Sightseeing tip:
Short walk from hotel
This hotel is between 0.5 to 2 miles of most of the major tourist attractions (Fisherman's Wharf, Japantown, Chinatown, Union Square, BART station) and I simply walked everywhere I went. However, a few destinations such as the California Academy of Sciences will require taking a bus, unless you want to walk for about an hour and a half.
