      Somewhat eclectic with personality

This hotel would be well located and that the rooms would be small. This proved to be true - but the hotel is well placed - staff are very helpful and this was a welcome change to the impersonal chains. Monarch Maverick Director of Pet Relations is a lovely chocolate lab who wears a brown robe and greets pets (and other guests) in the lobby with a worldly yawn - since the theme of the hotel is to be international and cosmopolitan. The Grand Cafe is a wonderful restaurant which we enjoyed so much that we ate three meals there during a 2 day stay.

      My Room Review

The hotel and front desk were very helpful and friendly. Only issue was we had asked our air to remain on several times and every time we returned to our room the air was shut off. I even taped a note on the air control unit.

      4th of July in SF

Hotel was beautiful, artfully restored older building. Standard rooms are very small, we upgraded to a junior suite after our 1st two nights for only $30/night! Staff was great, very friendly and accomodating. Had dinner in their restaurant, The Grand Cafe. Felt it was overpriced for the quality of the food. Very beautiful decor though. Hotel is in the middle of the very busy Union Square district. Parking is very difficult and expensive. We were lucky to find a garage for $25/night. Took a day trip to Napa. It was awesome! Very central and close to all the touristy stuff. Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square, Golden Gate Bride, Alcatraz. My favorite thing was seeing our San Diego Padres beat the Giants at AT&T Park. You have to see a ballgame there! Park is about 1.5 mile walk from the hotel. I recommend this hotel, but make sure you get a junior suite, or else you will feel cramped.

Grear hotel for international professional travellers.

This well located hotel in down town San Francisco offers friendly, highly quality, professional service that international travellers appreciate. The rooms are tastefully furnished with an individual touch that makes it distinctively San Francisco. Very good internet service, essentail for the international traveller. The French American restaurant adjoining the hotel is to die for. Best of all is the large reception room off the lobby where guests can enjoy coffee and read the newspapers.

      Nice atmosphere

Great location for shopping and dining. If you aren't up for walking to attractions there are several other transportation options close by. The restaurants within walking distance were good (Fino especially)! The room was comfy but on the small side.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

For women take proper shoes for walking up and down hills. San Francisco is known for hills. Better to walk to destination if you can as parking can be expensive.

      Great location in theater district

We stayed in Jacuzzi suite. Bathroom very large with glass shower. Very quiet. Comfortable bed. Nice robes. Living room sitting area off downstairs lobby inviting to place to have a drink, work, converse or just watch the interesting people go by on Geary. Really appreciated the complimentary newpapers WSJ NYT and USA.

      morning coffee by the fireplace

The hotel was traditional and charming - right downtown near lots of small shops and, my favorite, a neighborhood diner. The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Wall Street Journal were on the table by the complimentary morning coffee in a very comfortable lounge -- very pleasant start to the morning. I took a cup of fresh coffee down the street to the classic breakfast diner (cash only with a friendly waitress) for a great start to a hard-working day.

      Hotel Monaco

The room decor was somewhat jangling rather than soothing, although the bed and furniture were comfortable. There were some annoying room noises such as a small minibar fridge that rattled off and on thru the night. The bathroom was very nice however, though it sometimes took 30 seconds or longer to get hot water flowing from the showerhead. However, these are quibbles: staff were solicitous, breakfast excellent and elevators fast. Great locale too.
