Cool place to stay near Union Square
Good size rooms with unique decoration and furnishing style. NIce touches were the bathrobes and slippers. A friendly staff was great. The cafe located on the property was very nice place for breakfast.

Clean, courteous, cute character
As we all know, first impressions are key. We got dropped off by the folks and the Valet went out of his way to make us feel welcomed; even helping us look for cheaper parking. His attentive service was genuine. At first glance, the hotel's atmosphere was a mix of 1920's flapper and couture decadence. We loved that they had complementary hot chocolate in the lobby next to a roaring fire from 2-4p and a free wine reception later that evening. The room we had was small but, chic and super clean; which was a welcome retreat from the grimy SF streets. Comfy, clean bed, great ammenities in the bathroom (make-up mirror, hair dryer, etc). Loved the Aveda toiletries. I'm just bummed that our room didn't have a mini-fridge. The restaurant downstairs, The Grand, although having tasty food, service lacked finese and basic courtesies that I would have expected from all the touted accolades. Besides that, we would definitely stay here again.

Hooked on the Monaco!
We got off to a great start at the Monaco, arriving after 10pm and starved. The bellhop, [...], pointed us in the direction of his favorite Thai restaurant and boy did that hit the spot! The service never waned after that. While our room was small and was supposedly an upgrade, we loved the location, the staff, and the fun decor of the Monaco. On our last day we enjoyed the afternoon hot chocolate served in the lounge off the lobby. My only complaint was that the room was advertised as including L'Occitane shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. I was really looking forward to that and saw it as as small luxury--one that would make this vacation away from our three kids even more relaxing. So I was a little disappointed to find Aveda products. So much for my DIY French spa. But that was the only issue I had with the hotel. I would stay here again and seek out other Kimpton hotels for future trips.

In Hotel
The hotel's restaurant was divine and the type of place that people would seek out even if they're not staying at the hotel. The Grand Cafe is fine dining at its best. You can't beat the decor or the service. We had brunch here on our last day but wish we had passed up the greasy Greek diner on our first morning and had chosen the Grand Cafe instead.

Monaco - San Francisco
Choose hotel for location, design and dining rooms. Was pleased on most accounts but found the housekeeping of design elements--beds, sofas, tables off center from mirrors and pictures in rooms and lobbies--very disconcerting to an interior designer (me). Need a designer to go through and freshen up the placement of furniture and design elements--cleaning staff and guests are pushing furniture and lighting around and upsetting the design balance the hotel has tried to hard to achieve. Dining rooms were appreciated and one of the reasons we chose The Monaco. Wait staff was very good but food quality was quite mediocre.
