Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.
Highlights
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
  • Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street
  • Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms

Accommodations -- 141 rooms and 12 suites in all -- vary in size and configuration but come standard with flat-screen televisions, pillow-top mattresses, MP3 docking stations and in-room safes. Guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access as well as nightly turndown service.

Features

The King George Hotel, a free-standing structure, dates back to 1914 and has been renovated numerous times since. It also is now a certified member of the California Green Lodging Program.

All guests have access to a nearby Club One Health Club (fees apply), a full-service facility with spa, pool and fitness center. The hotel also offers 24-hour laundry service (fees apply).

Grab a pint (what else?) at Winston's Bar & Lounge, a kitschy-but-lovable bar on the ground floor. The pub no longer serves food, but the scene is still lively on weekend nights.

Valet and self-parking are available (fees apply).

Great location, but need some upgrade

For a hotel with a great location and at a reasonable price, King George is a top choice. The staff is friendly and helpful. It also offers free WIFI. The room is small but clean. You are a short walk from the Union Square. I would like to see a few changes. First, it would be good if they have some AC in the room. I know that most of the times you don't need AC in SF, but it does get warm from time to time, particularly for rooms facing west. A ceiling fan might not be enough. Second, the windows need better sound prove, particularly for rooms on the lower floors. Mason Street can get really noisy at night. Finally, the decor in the rooms need some upgrade (although they are rolling out new room styles as I am typing).

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the Bart or use Uber if you don't want to walk. Driving is a pain since parking is impossible. Taxi can be difficult to come by and quite expensive.

Great location, nothing special otherwise, but acceptable

GREAT location. Reasonably priced for the location. Desk staff needed prodding to honor the actual reservation for a king bed and sent me to a queen room first. Rooms are small. Acceptable for one person; would be tight quarters for two. Elevator (not plural) is ancient, small, and slow. Morning coffee/tea downstairs.

Charming hotel

Very convenient location, right in between Union Square and Market St. The staff is always very friendly. The rooms are small and the mattresses hard, but for the price, its hard to beat the value.

Walk past the fancy ones, this is the one to use!

King George Hotel is small. It is quaint. It has charm. It is clean and located a couple of block away from the last BART station in downtown SF. While it is also a great value, what makes King George exceptional is the staff. I cannot remember the last time I met such a set of classy and caring people. From the front desk personel, concierge, the lounge manager and the cleaning/maintenance staff. When we were there (03/05-08) they were in the middle of a remodel of the second and third floors. Not a problem. They made sure any guest that wanted could stay on the higher floors - we were never bothered by the noise. BTW, the excellent attitude of the Hotel staff clearly rubbed off on the contractors - those guys were just as pleasant! Now, when you go there, remember to stop the Lounge and ask for a Beer-22!!!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Two places you must eat: 1. Across the street is a small place (Pinecrest Diner) with exceptional breakfast - ate there twice in three days! 2. Around the block, the best sushi I have had in years was at a little hole-in-the-wall: Katana-ya. Not expensive, just fresh, crowded and excellent!

No complaints

I'd book again. The room was small but had a big walk in closet where I could fit all of my bags. This closet helped me keep the room neat.
