Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.

  • Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
  • Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street

Clean room with basic amenitites

Nice location near Union sqaure.. Rooms were clean and the beds were ok. The rooms were small but that is all that we needed. The staff was pleasant and was very courteous to meet all of our needs. A great value in this area where hotels can run ionto the hundreds of dollars per night. $85 a night was a great value compared to the several hundred we paid on an earlier trip.

No complaints

I'd book again. The room was small but had a big walk in closet where I could fit all of my bags. This closet helped me keep the room neat.

Amazing Weekend Trip

I have nothing negative to say about this hotel. Yes, the rooms are a bit on the small side, so if you are looking for a place to lounge around in all day, you can pay three times as much at any of the other hotels on this block to do just that. We came to explore the city and this was a great place to spend the night. Everything was clean, the beds were comfortable, staff was friendly, check-in was a breeze, and I didn't hear a peep from the room next door. We will definitely come back to King George Hotel!

Union Square Location

This charming hotel is just a block off Union Square where everything seems to be happening! The hotel is old, the rooms are small, the bathroom is TINY,,but the room is clean, there's enough space to be comfortable, and the staff was very pleasant and helpful.

SF

Hotel is in a great location. Union Square is a huge shopping area, high end shopping, you name the brand, the store is here. Think of Times Square NYC. Thats the level of pedestrian traffic. If you want to be in the heart of the city, this is the place. Also near all major public transportation. Note this hotel, despite its prime location, is not too far from the Tenderloin District which is a bit of a run down part of town. You will encounter beggars at the corners, and just steps out the door of the hotel. They seemed to be pretty harmless, but I say this so that you are forewarned. Also keep in mind that the weather stays pretty chilly, and a jacket is essential. This is NOT San Diego/Los Angeles where beach weather is the norm. Overall great trip, lots to see, do and explore.

Pretty basic, but a good deal in a good location.

Stayed for two nights, me and my two kids (9 and 5). Pretty basic amenities, but more than adequate. Reasonably clean, but kind of noisy neighborhood at night. Good location for catching cable cars and exploring downtown San Francisco. Staff was friendly and helpful every time we asked. Given that it's San Francisco, it was a pretty good deal (about $200.00 a night), but it is only a hotel room, so it still pains me to pay that much. Overall, a good spot for a trip to SF.

Easier and significantly less wait to catch a cable car one or two stops up from the roundabout at the bottom of Powell.

King George

OLD building. Decorating is pretty bad, unmatched thrift store furnishings. Horrendous rug design and color considering the lime green walls with hard-to-describe-color at the top and ceiling. The sheets and towels were crisp and clean, and the natural soaps were very nice. Filthy window streaked with pigeon droppings opened out onto a corrugated tin roof also covered with pigeon droppings - and cooing pigeons, and a never-ending loud fan/compressor noise from a large roof-top AC unit. I guess it was for an adjacent building because the rooms here are NOT air conditioned. The dust from pigeon droppings is especially bad for humans, so we didn't open the window after we saw it. We didn't spend any extra time there. It's not the kind of environment you want to languish in. It was convenient to the location we needed to be in for two days. I don't know if the $200.00+/night is a bargain for the area, but if it was here at home the room would be less than <$100.00/ night room. I'll look for something different next time.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

This area is west of Union Square, not far from the Tenderloin. Panhandlers, are abundant. Lots of people sleeping on the sidewalks. Shoes, socks, feces, urine, etc are not unusual on the sidewalks also. If you need to catch a bus to the North Beach in the morning, forget it until after 10 am or later. I had a 10 am appointment and ended up walking because the buses were jammed going north. Leave extra time for such things If you don't have to be in this area for some reason. There are modern hotels in the North Beach area for less than $100.00 a night more, that you will enjoy being in, and everything else is better there: the restaurants, bakeries, environment, transportation options, attractions, etc, etc. If you're going to be there a week or more, look into the condos for rent at less than $160.00 a night for the week on Telegraph Hill. We stayed at 52 Sonoma in July, and it put King George to shame.
