Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.Highlights
- Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
- Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street
- Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms
Accommodations -- 141 rooms and 12 suites in all -- vary in size and configuration but come standard with flat-screen televisions, pillow-top mattresses, MP3 docking stations and in-room safes. Guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access as well as nightly turndown service.
Features
The King George Hotel, a free-standing structure, dates back to 1914 and has been renovated numerous times since. It also is now a certified member of the California Green Lodging Program.
All guests have access to a nearby Club One Health Club (fees apply), a full-service facility with spa, pool and fitness center. The hotel also offers 24-hour laundry service (fees apply).
Grab a pint (what else?) at Winston's Bar & Lounge, a kitschy-but-lovable bar on the ground floor. The pub no longer serves food, but the scene is still lively on weekend nights.

San Francisco in a Day
We only have 2 days left in California after having spent 5 days in Napa. We decided to spend the last two days at the King George. BOY, it couldn't get any better. Our room, though on the first floor and facing a wall, was perfect. I have been to the city many times and know that value hotels, even expensive hotels, don't always have great views and are often very VERY small. This room was on the smaller side, but perfect for us. It clearly has been remodeled recently. The bathroom was beautiful and very clean. Eco friendly amenities were a nice touch. The bed was very comfortable and the desk/ overhead coffee bar perfect for cramped quarters. The staff were very helpful and quick to serve. The front desk assisted with directions and reservations to restaurants, though they also have a full time concierge to help with that. The location was also wonderful. A starbucks right around the corner, great Irish Pub, and Union Square was in spitting distance. It really was ideal for our needs. I would stay here again, anytime, with any amount of time. For the rate, you can't get any better!

Awesome location and Great service!
I stayed at the King George for my vacation trip in SF. My stay included lots of sightseeing, eating and drinking. I wished the rooms were bigger and the hotel was more modern. This trip was one of the best ones because it was so easy to get to the whole city from the hotel. The staff was super helpful and friendly.

Great Location
Centrally located and within easy walking distance to many sights and tourist attractions. Our first time to SF and enjoyed being in center of town. I was concerned about other postings complaining about the thinness of the walls and they are true. Bring earplugs, especially for the noise in the hallways from those late nighters. Room was small but comfortable. Staff was very helpful.

Can't Complain
The hotel was decent. It was a fine accomodation for what I needed which was a comfortable reliable place to stay. The hotel was located in such an area that I was able to walk many places and cabs were inexpensive. One downside is that with the convenience of Union Square catering to tourists, many of the convenient stores are expensive (I bought a bottle of champagne on the corner for $20, which I paid $7 for at Safeway). The area is a tourists trap and there is an overwhelming amount of homeless people begging at nearly every trun within a block radius or so. The hotel staff was friendly, but I didn't require much. The room was small, but I expected that. It wasn't the most fabulous hotel, but it was better than a Holiday Inn or Motel 6. It is perfectly fine, but if you need something more fancy, the Westin St. Francis is acorss the street. I got the feeling this hotel was standard issue for the area.

The staff is incredible nice and very helpful. The internet connection didn't wok well and the elevator wasn't working. Other than that everything was status quo.

There are better values in SF
Room was clean, but small, to be expected in historic hotel. Coffee maker on an old dresser in the closet was less than attractive. Location was close to Union Sq, but on the wrong side, a block from the Tenderloin. No bar or restaurant on site, had to leave the hotel.

Good for the money
Easy access to the conference center and the staff were very accommodating and gracious. Our room the first night was beside the elevator and on the front street -- definitely too noisy if you are from a quiet town. Spoke to the front desk person and he readily moved us to a room away from the elevator and front street for our next five nights, upgrading us in the process at no additional cost. Free access to computers and a printer in the lobby was very convenient for printing out driving directions for the next part of our vacation. The downside was the smell of urine and constant presence of begging homeless people on the street, but that was typical of this entire area of town. Even with that, still felt safe walking around at night due to the constant volume of tourists in the area. Very convenient to the trolley and several bus stops too.

You don't need to go to the trolley turnaround and wait in the long line to hop on the trolley. Buy your passport at the turnaround if you are going to ride the trolley several times (one way trip $6; unlimited passport ~$26) then go up a stop or two and hop on the trolley there.

Quiant Hotel in SF
The King George is a cute little place with its Brittish charm, but I got an unpleasant surprise when I opened the door and saw how small our (2 twin bed) room was. The pictures online must not have made that clear. Otherwise our stay was great.

Good stay.
Our stay was overall good. A little confusion with our room key at first (walked in on a couple) but quickly sorted out. We received an apology that felt sincere and the problem was fixed immediately. The walls could've been thicker, too much noise from outside and neighbors could be heard, not unbearable just too much for my taste. I would recommend this hotel to a friend. The color scheme of the whole could use some modernization.
