Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.
Highlights
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
  • Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street
  • Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms

Grab a pint (what else?) at Winston's Bar & Lounge, a kitschy-but-lovable bar on the ground floor. The pub no longer serves food, but the scene is still lively on weekend nights.

Great place to stay

I've stayed here three times for a week at a time each. The internet isn't the best, but it is free. Shower hot water was flakey on me in 1 of the rooms, but has been fine in the other 2 I've stayed in. Other than that everything has been great.

Good location, best price

Pretty good location downtown without being too noisy - close to Union Square shopping and restaurants, easy to jump on cable cars, and easy to walk to Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and other neighborhoods. We had a recently renovated room which was nice - You don't need A/C in San Francisco so don't worry. I do wish the bathroom had a fan and the shower curtain didn't wrap around the tub completely. Staff was friendly and helpful, answering all of our touristy questions.

Use Uber to get around the city, not traditional cabs - most drivers know the King George hotel and it's easy to get anywhere in the city from its location.

Great location, very tiny rooms

Right next to union square, walking distances to tons of shopping areas. Just was not expecting the enclosed spaces. Don't be claustrophobic going here, from the elevator which only fits four people, to the tiny staircase, small hall ways and very small rooms. Overall a great location with very polite staff.

Excellent location for a reasonable price

This little boutique hotel was perfect for my solo trip (and first!) to San Francisco. It was close to decent restaurants, public transportation, and shopping. I am an avid walker, and I didn't really need any of the public transportation for most of my trip. It is within a mile in any direction to almost everything I wanted to see. The room was small, but very clean and pretty. There is no A/C, but it is cool in SF, so I didn't miss it. All the rooms have ceiling fans and windows that open. It has a nice little lounge, and they have complimentary coffee, tea and ice water in the mornings (no breakfast). I would definitely stay there again.

great location, great staff, okay room

The hotel location is great but the room is quite basic. There was no desk and no chair in the room so it was difficult working on my computer as I had to do that while sitting in bed. It was also hard to hang out with another person in the room, again because the room was basically just the bed and a small dresser that also holds the TV. However I should say that the staff was very nice and accommodated my questions and small requests.

Great location, but need some upgrade

For a hotel with a great location and at a reasonable price, King George is a top choice. The staff is friendly and helpful. It also offers free WIFI. The room is small but clean. You are a short walk from the Union Square. I would like to see a few changes. First, it would be good if they have some AC in the room. I know that most of the times you don't need AC in SF, but it does get warm from time to time, particularly for rooms facing west. A ceiling fan might not be enough. Second, the windows need better sound prove, particularly for rooms on the lower floors. Mason Street can get really noisy at night. Finally, the decor in the rooms need some upgrade (although they are rolling out new room styles as I am typing).

Take the Bart or use Uber if you don't want to walk. Driving is a pain since parking is impossible. Taxi can be difficult to come by and quite expensive.

Great location and fair price

Very friendly staff and great location I would suggest for you to park your car in any of the parking lots that are 2 blocks away if you want overnight parking. It is cheaper than using the hotel's valet parking service.
