Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.
Highlights
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
  • Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street
  • Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms

Accommodations -- 141 rooms and 12 suites in all -- vary in size and configuration but come standard with flat-screen televisions, pillow-top mattresses, MP3 docking stations and in-room safes. Guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access as well as nightly turndown service.

Features

The King George Hotel, a free-standing structure, dates back to 1914 and has been renovated numerous times since. It also is now a certified member of the California Green Lodging Program.

Grab a pint (what else?) at Winston's Bar & Lounge, a kitschy-but-lovable bar on the ground floor. The pub no longer serves food, but the scene is still lively on weekend nights.

A conveniently located boutique type hotel with comfortable rooms for a stay in The City, where you do not plan on spending time in the room. Glad we stayed there.

Great location, but need some upgrade

For a hotel with a great location and at a reasonable price, King George is a top choice. The staff is friendly and helpful. It also offers free WIFI. The room is small but clean. You are a short walk from the Union Square. I would like to see a few changes. First, it would be good if they have some AC in the room. I know that most of the times you don't need AC in SF, but it does get warm from time to time, particularly for rooms facing west. A ceiling fan might not be enough. Second, the windows need better sound prove, particularly for rooms on the lower floors. Mason Street can get really noisy at night. Finally, the decor in the rooms need some upgrade (although they are rolling out new room styles as I am typing).

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the Bart or use Uber if you don't want to walk. Driving is a pain since parking is impossible. Taxi can be difficult to come by and quite expensive.

Goor location, if size doesn't matter

It's a great location, close to bigger hotels twice the price. But they put me in what was probably the smallest hotel room I've ever been in. Also, the walls were paper thin. Still, it's clean, centrally located, and priced well.

Close to public transportation

The hotel is one street over from Union Square and local shopping. And access to public transportation and bus tours is handy. The rooms are small but newly remodeled and very clean. Since it is a busy city there is a fair share of street noise that you would except. We enjoyed a nice glass wine in their bar after a busy day touring the city.

Great location and fair price

Very friendly staff and great location I would suggest for you to park your car in any of the parking lots that are 2 blocks away if you want overnight parking. It is cheaper than using the hotel's valet parking service.

Perfect location

The room was small, but completely adequate for our needs. The faucet in the bathroom leaked, but was not loud or annoying. There are numerous restaurants nearby and Union Square, the Trolley, and Bart station are all a short walk away. I would definitely stay here again!

This hotel has many positives. Friendly staff, good location, very clean rooms. Staff very helpful in guiding to good restaurants and how to use local transportation. Could use a fridge in the room. Thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Would definitely recommend a stay there.

nice hotel

The hotel is very nice looking, friendly staff and the location is perfect for short distance walks to restaurants, stores, parking building, etc. Though the room is quite small it is clean and organized. The elevator is narrow so it only fits around 4 people same with the stairs which is quite steep to climb to but overall worth the stay and price.
