Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.
Highlights
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
  • Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street
  • Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms

My review of King George Hotel

Hotel George is a boutique hotel with an excellent friendly staff. The rooms are small and decorated nicly . If your lodging needs is for sleeping then this hotel is adequate having only a small bar and breakfast area. The beds were comfortable and the small and the small walk in close made luggage storeage manable with two suitcases. The bathrooms were very small but sufficient and the white tile was excellently cared for and made the bathroom appear roomy. It is convenient to the Cable cars and other public tansportation and walkable to many shopping areas as well. Although it has a small reception/ sitting lobby area, it is nicely decorated and well maintained and in fact had new carpeting installed in the lobby and throughout the main level overnight during our stay. The negatives are the smallest of the room, and early morning noise since our room was directly above an alleyway. Although it does not have parking included, across the street there is a parking garage for around $30.00 and there is hotel valet service available. Also the hotel borders O'Farrell Street which the homeless do inhabit; however, if your walk is towards Union Square, it is not a concern. It is walkable from the BART station if coming from the San Francisco Airport. There were restaurants nearby.

Don't bother getting on the cable car at the terminus, instead get on them a block or so in - getting the cable car from Union Square saves a huge wait at a terminus.

King George

We spent three nights in King George while visiting San Francisco. We found the area of the town around the hotel to be noisy at night, and close to some not-so-safe areas of town. However, we slept through the noise, and with a city map and our travel book we did not "stumble into" any bad neighborhoods near the hotel. The hotel itself is in a touristy few blocks of town, which lack some S.F. authenticity but are very safe. The hotel's location is farther from Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz, etc., than other, higher priced hotels, but if you like to walk, it is about 30 minutes and you receive a rich walking tour of the north side of town with amazing views (if you don't mind hills). Additionally, we were actually closer than the expensive wharf "tourist" hotels to many other interesting parts of town, including the museum area, Union Square, Haight-Ashbury, Alamo Square, and Golden Gate Park. There are lots of art galleries and very high end shopping two blocks away in Union Square. Chinatown is about a ten minute walk north. The hotel is simple but clean inside. The decor in the room and lobby is old fashioned and charming. The hotel is not fancy but it was neat, comfortable, safe and quiet (noise from outside notwithstanding). There is a charge to use the internet on their computers. There is cable car and city transport access nearby. The staff and conceierge is helpful for arranging transport and other things. There is a bar with a happy hour. Overall, we liked the hotel for all the reasons above. There were some drawbacks, but for the price, we were very happy and would stay there again in the future. It would be considered a 3/5 star hotel based on its luxury, amenities, etc., but we gave it 4 stars for the reasons above. It might not be the best hotel or area if you have young children along, however. We would recommend it to younger trsvellers, or any age travelers who might enjoy a S.F. experience that is a mix of tourist atractions and some more authentic, eclectic aspects of town.

Absolutely Lovely Hotel Great Location

The King George was a great choice. The price is perfect, the location is awesome. The hotel is old, so small rooms were expected, but they do very well fitting in the necessities. The best thing was the staff. They were very friendly and extremely helpful. We stayed 9 nights here and were put in the smallest room our first night. Upon check-in they told us we could switch to a bigger room the next day if we would like. They held our bags and moved them into the new room for us while we were out. Also, when we checked out, they held our bags all day until we needed to leave for our flight. It really was a great vacation and the King George played a huge part in that.

Do not drive or get a car in San Francisco. Parking is outrageous. Most hotels do not have parking and if they do its between $30 and $60 per night. We walked everywhere, took public transit which is fantastic, and only rented a car one day to travel to wine country.
