Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.Highlights
- Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
- Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street
- Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms

Grab a pint (what else?) at Winston's Bar & Lounge, a kitschy-but-lovable bar on the ground floor. The pub no longer serves food, but the scene is still lively on weekend nights.

No fridge in the room.. Would have liked one. The room was very small and decor a little old fashioned. Location is great! Cafe Mason next door has lovely food and always busy.

Great San Francisco Character!
The room and bathroom were a little on the small size but the character of the hotel makes up for all of that! There is no a/c in this hotel which I was little nervous about and I don't know if that's normal or not but the weather was cool enough that I actually pulled out an extra blanket to keep me warm. Because of the location, it would have been noisy if we had had to open to window to keep cool. The staff here were wonderful, too! So helpful and proper.

Even though we aren't into the nightlife, this would be a great location if you are. Every night while heading back to our hotel there were so many people out and about at restaurants and clubs.

Great Euro-style hotel
This hotel has a nice, Euro-style feel to it and was great for a four-night stay in San Francisco. Located in the Union Square area, it is centrally located to most attractions in the city and within walking distance of the subway, rail, bus, street car and cable car systems that take you everywhere else. Rooms were on the smaller side due to its european style, but they were clean and neat and had decent bedding. Beware it appeared there is no air-conditioning although we didn't need it while we were there. The rooms are slightly noisy since the doors were thin and we had to keep the windows open to compensate for no air conditioning (busy neighborhood). The hotel amenities are also slightly lacking (breakfast not included, no public computers available), but the staff was very friendly and willing to answer any questions you had. Not sure if they had a parking option although there was an unaffiliated lot across the street. For the area, I would say definitely a good place for the money since some similar hotels go for a decent amount more than what we paid.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Be sure to use the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) when coming in from San Francisco airport to save since from what I understand cabs can be really expensive. Also there are a bunch of diners (including Lori's nextdoor) that are in the area and Walgreens where you can pick up stuff you need. Probably the best place to pick up food/snacks would be if you came across a Luckies grocery store (at Fulton & Masonic, off Route 5 bus) or something else. Also pick up a MUNI multi-day pass if you intend on using the public transportation (bus, streetcars, cable cars, subway) a lot over multiple days. We used a 3-day pass for $18. One place these can be bought is at the visitor's center at the powell street station. I think one-ways on most of the public transit options are $2 to $5 and note BART is separate from MUNI (San Fran Municipal Trans Agency).

King George
We spent three nights in King George while visiting San Francisco. We found the area of the town around the hotel to be noisy at night, and close to some not-so-safe areas of town. However, we slept through the noise, and with a city map and our travel book we did not "stumble into" any bad neighborhoods near the hotel. The hotel itself is in a touristy few blocks of town, which lack some S.F. authenticity but are very safe. The hotel's location is farther from Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz, etc., than other, higher priced hotels, but if you like to walk, it is about 30 minutes and you receive a rich walking tour of the north side of town with amazing views (if you don't mind hills). Additionally, we were actually closer than the expensive wharf "tourist" hotels to many other interesting parts of town, including the museum area, Union Square, Haight-Ashbury, Alamo Square, and Golden Gate Park. There are lots of art galleries and very high end shopping two blocks away in Union Square. Chinatown is about a ten minute walk north. The hotel is simple but clean inside. The decor in the room and lobby is old fashioned and charming. The hotel is not fancy but it was neat, comfortable, safe and quiet (noise from outside notwithstanding). There is a charge to use the internet on their computers. There is cable car and city transport access nearby. The staff and conceierge is helpful for arranging transport and other things. There is a bar with a happy hour. Overall, we liked the hotel for all the reasons above. There were some drawbacks, but for the price, we were very happy and would stay there again in the future. It would be considered a 3/5 star hotel based on its luxury, amenities, etc., but we gave it 4 stars for the reasons above. It might not be the best hotel or area if you have young children along, however. We would recommend it to younger trsvellers, or any age travelers who might enjoy a S.F. experience that is a mix of tourist atractions and some more authentic, eclectic aspects of town.

Going buggie in San Francisco
Noise from the city street could be heard from the 4th floor even in a room away from the street. Lost sleep. One of the first things I noticed was a small stain on the sheet of a drop of blood. Now I know it was the blood sucked from a guest by BED BUGS. On the second night I saw and felt the bed bugs! After we told them about the bed bugs, they washed all our clothes, gave me money for Benedryl cream, and changed our room to the 2nd floor. Now my husband and I have a big medical bill and have to take a 5 day course of steroids and itch! San Francisco is one of the top ten cities tourist visit in the world and has lots of visitors from around the world. So those bugs could have come from any continent carrying any disease! We have heard that the bed bug problem is spreading, much higher and wide spread than ever, and after we returned home we learned it is especially buggie in San Francisco. We came on Wednesday to take our 19 year old to the Academy of Art University. Luckily she says she was not bitten. She moved out of the hotel into her dorm on Friday morning. We left on Sunday. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Bathroom and LED flat screen TV was nice. No view out window. The restaurants surrounding the hotel were very expensive; the hotel only provided tea & coffee, not even a continental breakfast. Disappointing. When you pay $4.99 at a restaurant for a glass of orange juice, it spoils your appetite. Hotel had no fridge for doggie bags for overpriced over sized meals. The Pinecrest Diner nearby the hotel had good food and was very popular for breakfast. Prices started at $9.95. But the hotel was close to the dorm and transportation and lots of Walgreens for dorm supplies and Benedryl. It was in walking distance to Chinatown and the Union Plaza with its visitors center.

Contradictory impression
I and 10-years old dauther visited San Francisco as a tourist. All I need from hotel is a bed and parking. But the bed in the center of small room made me feel tight. Instead of other motels I stay during trip parking in this hotel is not free and inconvenient.

Great Location
great location. close to all attractions. $9 to get to fishermans wharf on taxi. we were a group of 5 so it was perfect. Happy hour is 5-7 . wine was 4.50 glass. $13 at a trendy bar around the block. Liquer store at the end of block is way overpriced.. parking is 28.00 daily for self across the street.$30 for valet. believe it or not its a a great price. Other hotels 40-50 daily!!! public tranportation system day cards were 11.00 for unlimited use. Little italy $8.00 away with taxi. Have concierge book alcatraz tickets for 26.00. brochures around town state 35.00 per person!

My time at the King George
This hotel in functional but is not fancy. It has hardly any basic amenities. There is no pool. the rooms are particularly small. The hotel has no places to eat on site. The lobby is small and the 1 elevator won't be be able to accommodate a large family in one shot. Maid service must be requested everyday or it's done every other day - under the pretense of saving the environment through not over cleaning. Towels are cleaned only if they are left on the floor and the linens are changed only if you leave the their "sign" on the bed. Finally the view from my Window was a wall. The walls were paper thin so that you could hear any and all noise in the hallways. Enough Said.

Good location
There was a conference to attend in the West Bay and I decided to stay in San Francisco. The location of the hotel was good, only 5 minutes walk to the BART station to take the train. But the room is outdated and not very clean, but good value for a discount price.
