Beautiful views of the city at historical, iconic Nob Hill hotel

The Intercontinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco opened in 1926 at the crest of Nob Hill and has been wowing visitors ever since. Visitors flock from all over the city to experience The Top of the Mark, a restaurant and lounge on the 19th floor of the hotel, which showcases breathtaking views of the entire city and bay. The lobby, with its ornate columns and marble accents, is a fitting welcome. Upstairs, rooms are intimate and modern in style and conveniences.

Highlights
  • Dine at Top of the Mark restaurant for views of the city
  • Located at the crest of Nob Hill
  • Relax in restored lobby with touches from yesteryear
Rooms

Accommodations -- 348 rooms and 32 suites -- have crown moldings and other subtle touches that capture the authentic turn-of-the-century feel, yet the rooms boast modern conveniences. Each room comes standard with a flat-screen television, granite-countertop bathrooms, spacious work desks and plush bedding. Members of the property's Lobby Club receive complimentary room upgrades, late check-out and daily food and beverage presentations. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four-Diamond Award. It was named for Mark Hopkins, a founder of the Central Pacific Railroad, on whose land the hotel was built.

The property offers complimentary 24-hour access to cardio and free-weight machines in its on-site fitness center, as well as complimentary town car service into the Financial District on weekday mornings.

The real show-stopper at the Mark Hopkins is the Top of the Mark, a restaurant and lounge on the 19th floor. The hotel opened in 1926 and this eatery opened 13 years later, in 1939. Since then it has been a favorite spot for many of San Francisco's rich and famous. The menu is eclectic; a drink list boasts 100 different martinis.

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

When the shower leaks

The hotel is grand and old. The pipes rattle and my shower ceiling leaked. The maintenance man told me I should be happy it leaked in the tub as it was probably just overflow from the tub on the floor above. If it had been over the toilet it would have been raw sewage. Check to make sure the cable cars are running. The hill is a bear to walk up! Some front desk staff are amazing. Others remind you that it is not their job to be a desk clerk.

Great Location! Loved it!

I stayed there for two nights. Mark Hopkins was the best location for Union Square, North Beach, and China Town etc... I will definitely come back to the hotel. Only disappointment was the top floor bar, the top of the mark lounge. They said it was Jazz night. so we went there because we love Jazz. We heard the old dance music!!!! we could not pass the entrance and went back directly to our room to watch TV instead.

unbeatable location for the price

The hotel and location is perfect for shopping and dining if you are in good shape to walk up the steep hill from Union Square. The hotel was beautiful however the front desk clerk was rude. He asked if we wanted double beds or a king and my comment was, "whichever room is the nicer room." He sarcastically said, "If you want a nicer room, you can have one if you pay more money." He ended up giving us a room on the 4th floor with a view of some rooftop with tarp on it. If that was the nicer room, I hate to see what the other looked like!

GETTING AN ALL DAY TICKET FOR THE TROLLY WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY. IT SAVES MONEY BY ALLOWING THE RIDER TO GET OFF AND GET BACK ON WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY AGAIN. BESIDES, IT GOES TO ALL OF THE INTERESTING PLACES, ESPECIALLY FISHERMEN'S WHARF

Wonderful Stay

All the staff were very professional and friendly. We asked for suggestions on local bars and dining and everyone gave us great places to go to. The Top of the Mark was very romantic watching the sunset go down our first night visiting. We had a wonderful time in San Francisco and will definitely be back.

Great Experience!

As frequent visitors to San Francisco, we were pleasantly surprised with our stay at the Mark Hopkins. AWESOME location atop Nob Hill. Just a few short blocks from practically everything, yet far enough away from the craziness of the city. If you are looking for a sophisticated environment in a quiet location, definitely consider the Mark Hopkins. Entire staff was very accomodating and professional. Wonderful experience at check in, when we asked for a room with a view she gave us a corner room. Even further, she suggested that we can check with the front desk the next morning if the room was not suitable. (It was great!). Would definitely return, [...]

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

For every shopping venue imaginable, walk down the hill approx 2 blocks to Union Square. Everything from Saks, Neimans, Bloomies, Nordstrom, Prada, etc. Consider taking a cable car back up the hill cause the hills are rather deceiving going upward (walking down is not an issue).

3rd visit to San Francisco

My husband and I just got married January 22nd and thought of no other place to go than to San Francisco for our honeymoon! This was our 3rd stay at Mark Hopkins and every stay is just like the first! The staff is friendly, helpful and very welcoming. We were amazed at the view from our room and it made for a perfect honeymoon suite! Thanks for a memorable visit, we will most certainly be back soon to stay again!
