Wonderful anniversary trip
lynsval Dec 8, 2009
This hotel was amazing. It was close to everything we needed. The muni and BART were right outside the door. We upgraded to ... the newer remodeled room and I'm glad we did. The bed and linens were extremely comfy. On our last day we checked out, stored our baggage until about 12:30. We were able to make one last quick trip down to Chinatown and get back to the hotel with no delays! We hopped on the BART to the airport and it all went smoothly. Perfect.

It turned out to be ok, just made the small room seem smaller. The hotel was clean and quiet. My husband did not care for the old, out-dated feel. My son arrived one day before me astayed at the Wittcome. The next day ,after I arrived in SF,he called me and let me know ... they, his wife and 2 children were checking out. Why? Hotel Whitcomb a Real Bargain

This older hotel, located in downtown San Francisco, is a real bargain. While the rooms are older, they are comfortable and ... clean, and they are not expensive. The restaurant is adequate and a little expensive for the quality of the food. The service is top-notch.

Add $28 for parking per day.
World Traveler Nov 10, 2009
At the time of check out (Monday October 9 @ 5:45 am) the person at the front desk was really disrespectful. Apparently, he ... was mad because we inquire about the high price they charge for parking ($28 per day.) He argued that I should know better, because he had traveled all around the world, and he always payed similar prices for it.

This is a nice hotel in a mediocre location. The rooms were clean, elevators worked, etc. It's walking distance to the ... Ferry Building and Union Square and right off BART. However, restaurants are few in the area and the noise from the streetcars and ambulances can be a problem.

Good value if you don't have a car
C.L. Nov 9, 2009
The hotel itself was fine and the price was attractively low. The location is great and the service is good. I would ... recommend it. All my problems resulted from having a rental car that I picked up at the airport. There was no signage at the hotel indicating how to access the parking garage. Valet service was in the back, accessible by a side road that I found only by trial and error. There is a fee of $28/day to park the car in the hotel garage. I thought that was high. I was later told that I should expect to pay even higher fees to park a car in a hotel garage. If this is the case, this information should be in your profile of the hotel. (If it was there, I did not see it.) Knowing this in advance would have influenced my choice of hotel and may have influenced my decision to rent a car. At the least, it would have allowed me to prepare for this expense in advance.

Good hotel, bad neighborhood
Mr. Tourist Nov 8, 2009
An old-style city hotel - think grand lobby, art deco hints in the halls, and small rooms. Really all one needs if the ... emphasis of the trip is running about town. But the location is rough - more on that below: Rooms - cramped but clean. No free outlets, aging tv, mattress kinda lumpy, and sparse bathroom. Staff - friendly, helpful, professional. Restaurant - Quite nice. Bar closes early which is a problem in a neighborhood I don't want to wander about, but eh... Location - Ok, this is what really colors the experience. The neighborhood is rough. Lots of street people walking about. Streets reek of urine. At night, it gets worse. The bart is right outside the hotel, which is an ok solution for those without a car. If you have a car - use the valet parking option - for a set price you can get to your car as many times as you want during the day.

Self Employed Steve Nov 2, 2009
We stayed a night while going to Symphony Hall, which is a nice 10 min walk by the City Hall/Civic Center. The landmark hotel ... is right in front of Bart on Market st. There is a nice big city feeling. However, very small room, no solid curtins; only the thin white layer so you cant keep out light. At night if your lights are on, it feels like other people can see in your window. I found a long black hair on the clean towels in the bathroom. Staff was not very curtious or helpfull. It was Halloween and the staff could not recommend any night life. Bums sleeping around and sirens going by all night long. The price was ok, but I feel Whitcomb is overrated.

Romy Nov 1, 2009
I've read all the terrible reviews of this place, and have no doubt that some people have had terrible experiences, but our ... experience was pretty awesome for the price, and I'd stay here again for sure. Sure, I've had better hotel rooms, but never a cheaper one in a big city, so close to public transportation. Sure, the neighborhood isn't great, but it's only a few blocks away from the Powell St. cable car turnaround/Union Square and within spitting distance of a BART/Muni station. The staff was polite and friendly, and upon check-in we got upgraded to a better room without asking. The room was clean, the sheets were clean and seemed new enough, the bed was reasonably comfortable, there were plenty of pillows, and we were far away from street level. My worst complaint is that the bathroom floor was a bit beat up- hardly a big deal.

Eat a the Vietnamese restaurant Tu Lan, a short walk from the hotel. If you're stuck up and don't like a grungy asian food experience than don't bother, your tastes will surely be offended. We had a great stay. There was a festival going on at the time, and there was an influx of people from there. It was colorful to ... say the least! The hotle lobby was elegant and reeked old time class. From the marble floors to the wood ceilings, and the chandeliers we were reminded of hotels shown in old movies, where tux and dress were the wear of the day.The restuarant was very nice. The staff got us a reservation, even though they were swamped. The food was excellent. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and clean.Checkin and out was quick and the staff very friendly. They went out of their way to make sure we had what we needed, and arranged an airport shuttle for us.We feel that the price is reasonable and we would stay there again.

The location was fine for what we wanted to do. The parking was a mess. The valet parking at the hotel was crazy expensive, ... $32 so I recomend you park next door for $20.
