Luxury meets history, vintage meets modern at Theater District hotel

The Hotel Whitcomb has a place in San Francisco history like no other: Following the 1906 earthquake, the building actually served as City Hall. The majestic Theater District property still looks a lot like it did back then, with crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass and Italian marble columns and floors. Made-to-look-old furniture highlights rooms upstairs, though modern conveniences abound as well. The on-site Market Street Grill serves up basic American fare.

Highlights
  • Historical spot -- the hotel once served as San Francisco's City Hall
  • Located in the Theater District, across Market Street from the Orpheum Theater
  • Ornate preserved lobby
  • Dine on classic American fare at The Market Street Grill
Rooms

High ceilings are common in the Whitcomb's 447 guest rooms and 12 suites. Furniture in these rooms has been specially crafted so it looks old. Accommodations come standard with modern conveniences as well, including flat-screen televisions, ironing boards and spacious workstations. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. The Sunny Jim Suite also includes a wet bar and a dining area.

Features

Marble floors, polished brass fixtures, Tiffany glass and fresh flowers accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area transports guests back to the turn of the 20th Century, when the building briefly served as City Hall. It became a hotel in 1916. It's also a great place to enjoy a coffee and read a complimentary newspaper.

All guests have access to an on-site health and fitness center, dry-cleaning service (fees apply) and transportation to San Francisco International Airport (fees apply).

Grab a homemade Dungeness crab cake at The Market Street Grill, the on-site restaurant. Customers enter through the Tavern Piano Bar, a classic lounge that can get downright boisterous on weekend nights.

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Mood over Matter

Very direct and unmannerly front off house staff, checking in was a laugh and thought I was getting arrested with the bad mannered male receptionist on duty. Nice hotel with no personality and lacking the american flare I would expect. Wifi was slow like the hot water. Previous comments on the homelessness was putting me off but found them more polite and mannerly than some of the staff.

Pride 2014

The lobby and hallways are beautiful and classic. I felt like I had walked into an old Hollywood hotel. The staff could have been friendlier. But our location was perfect for pride! We were a block away from all the big events and could go back to the room to use the bathroom or have a drink. The rooms were a little small. But I would definitely stay here again for pride

Better options

Hotel needs some work. I booked a Queen but was given a Double. Dust everywhere, poor water pressure, and there was a Cheez-It inside the wall mounted air conditioner that remained after maid 'cleaned' after first night. Hall smelled of pot even though it was a non-smoking hotel. Hall carpet needs some vacuuming. Ice machine broken on our floor. Won't stay again.

Good location, good deal

I've stayed in a lot of cruddy hotels in SF. I always go for the cheap ones because who spends that much time in the hotel room on vacation? But of course most of the time you spend there is sleeping and the cheaper the hotel, the worse the bed/linens. I was so super happy to discover very fresh, very new/contemporary linens. There wasn't one of those gross ancient 70s-patterned crusty duvets. It was a fluffy, soft white comforter with four -- count 'em FOUR -- new pillows. The bed was heaven. And that's all I need. As for the rest of the experience, honestly, I wasn't there much. The house keeping staff seemed very friendly. I only interacted with the front desk upon check-in. If I had to say one "bad" thing it's the hotel restaurant. Overpriced sub-mediocre food. Other than that, it was worth $415 for four night's on Market Street in SF. Thumbs up.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Very close to Union Square. Also close to the Tenderloin. Keep your wallets in the front pocket. The insanity is pretty self-contained, just be smart.

A Blast from the past

We enjoyed our stay at the Whitcomb Hotel. Loved the ambience of this place which looks to be virtually unchanged since the 30s The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The hotel was very busy, and one slight downside was the lifts are extremely slow in spite of 4 in the main lobby, only 1 ever seems to turn up. There some huge crystal chandeliers, which looked a bit dull, these would look stunning if they were cleaned up.
