Overview

Enter the elegant embrace of the city s storied past at Hotel Whitcomb, in San Francisco, where Austrian crystal chandeliers twinkle above marble columns, parquet floors, intricate wood paneling, and jewel-like stained glass.

A marvel of early 20th-century architecture, Hotel Whitcomb temporarily lodged the city s government after the 1906 earthquake. You can still see the ghost of the words City Hall above the entrance. It later became the place to see-and-be-seen in San Francisco. Recline or work in a lavishly appointed guestroom, or parlor suite mixing Edwardian charm with contemporary luxuries, from free Wi-Fi to flat-screen televisions and spacious work desks.

You can dine within the Whitcomb in candlelit splendor, or head off to any number of astonishing eateries in the vibrant Market Street neighborhood. In-house, The Tavern s live piano tunes are the perfect accompaniment to luscious pub food or cocktails, before an evening at the Orpheum Theatre across the street.

You can also dine by the cozy fireplace at Florinda s Market Street Grill; serving up award-winning seafood, pasta and steaks under vaulted ceilings and Tiffany glass. In the misty San Francisco mornings, pick up a quick Starbucks coffee in the lobby before heading to attractions such as the Asian Art Museum and Union Square. To explore further, hop on the trolley which will make a stop in front of the hotel.

Tiny room

Would not recommend Tue, Jan 19, 2016
The room was really small - felt claustrophobic the entire time. Old. The lobby was stunning - all old glamour but they seem to have forgotten to make the rooms human-sized. Great location in terms of walking around and transportation. Internet failed at least one night, requiring a long phone call. The bed felt lumpy. I had called ahead with special request but discovered it was NOT written down. This delayed my getting a room and that was a drag. The hotel staff on duty for check-in were helpful though and able to refrigerate my special (organic) food immediately.

Beautiful place alone or with company

Would recommend Tue, Nov 24, 2015
I love this place I come here as often as I can. I often time stay in San Francisco just for a night or two because it's a lot of hassle to go back and forth from where I reside. This hotel for the price per night is the best deal in the city. This hotel is beautiful warm welcoming and the the perfect size in the best part of the city. I stay in this place because of its location and because of its staff and because of the delicious grill downstairs. At any time that I've ever had an issue their staff members take care of it immediately.

zero water pressure

Would not recommend Sun, Nov 22, 2015
The thing that stuck out the most about this hotel was the horrible water pressure in our shower, and how TINY the bathroom was. While you were using the bathroom you could rest your head on the sink and touch the shower curtain. There was no way two people could be in there at once. You could also hear everything going on in the hallway. The staff was super friendly though- and helpful.

Old Haunted Hotel

Would not recommend Sat, Nov 21, 2015
Overpriced, old, outdated, smelly, dirty hotel where you step over the sleeping homeless people as you try to exit the hotel. Looks like they have not spent a penny up keeping this hotel in the last 25 years. We were too scared to walk out the hotel from the level of homeless drug addicts sleeping out side the hotel begging for change. This hotel is way overpriced at any cost!

San Francisco Trip

Would not recommend Tue, Sep 29, 2015
My spouse and I were in town for the Folsom Fair and we stayed at the Whitcomb. The hotel looks grand and royal from the outside and the lobby was impressive, however, the rooms were dirty, old, and out dated. We stayed in a room with a queen sized bed and not much room for anything else. The electrical needs updating as there were only a couple of outlets and they did not work properly. The bathroom was so tiny, you can't turn around in it. The water pressure of the shower was so weak that it should be call a sprinkle, not a shower. Some of the staff were rude and especially the manager. When the computers in the business office did not work properly, I asked him to complete a transaction on his computer and he wanted to charge me. I believe if something does not work in a hotel, it is the management's responsibility to make it right. Needless to say, for the amount they charged per night, they should invest more money into their hotel and make it as nice on the inside as it looks on the outside.

Long weekend San Francisco

Would recommend Tue, Sep 15, 2015
This is a lovely old hotel very conveniently located on Market Street near a BART station. One can also walk to Chinatown, North Beach, Civic Center, etc. There is a restaurant on-site along with a Starbucks and multiple other options within walking distance. The electricity is adequate for computers and chargers. Do not expect either room coffee or a mini-fridge. (The latter might be available on request.) The staff was unfailingly polite and accommodating.
