Luxury meets history, vintage meets modern at Theater District hotel
The Hotel Whitcomb has a place in San Francisco history like no other: Following the 1906 earthquake, the building actually served as City Hall. The majestic Theater District property still looks a lot like it did back then, with crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass and Italian marble columns and floors. Made-to-look-old furniture highlights rooms upstairs, though modern conveniences abound as well. The on-site Market Street Grill serves up basic American fare.
Highlights
- Historical spot -- the hotel once served as San Francisco's City Hall
- Located in the Theater District, across Market Street from the Orpheum Theater
- Ornate preserved lobby
- Dine on classic American fare at The Market Street Grill
Rooms
High ceilings are common in the Whitcomb's 447 guest rooms and 12 suites. Furniture in these rooms has been specially crafted so it looks old. Accommodations come standard with modern conveniences as well, including flat-screen televisions, ironing boards and spacious workstations. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. The Sunny Jim Suite also includes a wet bar and a dining area.
Features
Marble floors, polished brass fixtures, Tiffany glass and fresh flowers accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area transports guests back to the turn of the 20th Century, when the building briefly served as City Hall. It became a hotel in 1916. It's also a great place to enjoy a coffee and read a complimentary newspaper.
All guests have access to an on-site health and fitness center, dry-cleaning service (fees apply) and transportation to San Francisco International Airport (fees apply).
Grab a homemade Dungeness crab cake at The Market Street Grill, the on-site restaurant. Customers enter through the Tavern Piano Bar, a classic lounge that can get downright boisterous on weekend nights.
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

The Hotel Whitcomb was a ...
The Hotel Whitcomb was a dissapointment. During my three day stay the ice machine was broken the entire time forcing me to travel to a different floor everytime I needed ice to keep my babies milk cold, since there was no refrigerator in the room. The only positive thing i have to say is the parking valets were friendly and quick and the concierge was very helpfull. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Great site to visit San Francisco
The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. This hotel is approximately 95 yrs old and is in terrific condition as well as architecturally attractive - the stained glass accoutrements in the lobby and restaurant/bar are very well done. Close by (walking distance) are local diners for breakfasts that will keep you well fed throughout the day - Sam's is directly across the street. At the end of our stay, getting back onto the freeway was easy and close by.

Not Applicable
You are in the heart of the city. Commercial transportation is available to attractions such as:Fisherman's Wharf harbor cruises and trolley car, as well as shops & restaurants, Chinatown, to mention a few. By car cross the Golden Gate Bridge and visit Sausalito or Miur Woods, or take a drive down Lombard - the crookedest street in the world.

Great Value
This hotel stay was a very good value. Also, the staff and service was excellent. I was unable to get wi-fi reception in my room and they moved me to another room with excellent reception (and it was a suite, no less). Public Transportation is excellent. There is a Muni station right at the entrance to the hotel. My one caution to other customers is that this hotel is not in the nicest section of town. There are numberous pan handlers and homeless on the streets around the hotel.

Economical way to stay SF
The room was cozy and clean. And The public parking area is very close to the hotel. (The valet parking is $28/day and public parking is $15 over night parking) One thing that I disliked, the bathroom is not clean enough... But it was very economical, and good location (close to the Japan town and downtown) worth to pay =)

Budget Hotel
The Whitcomb was at one time a beautiful hotel. Unfortunately, the neighborhood has become unsafe and the hotel hasn't been updated. It is clean, the rooms have high ceilings (which is good) and it has a Starbucks in the lobby (great since the internet never worked) - but the bathrooms are pretty old, paint is peeling and there isn't much light in the rooms. The front desk had problems getting us a crib, but very kindly offered us two breakfast tickets to compensate for the difficulty. Of course, we were 4 in the room! But otherwise the room size was all right and the restaurant people very nice. It's hard because you can't find a hotel for this price in the city, but I wish they'd warn you about the area. I had the operator call the hotel to check about the neighborhood as I had heard higher up on Market is sketchy, and the hotel operator insisted the area was safe -which was SOOOO not true. We felt we had to stay in the hotel or drive out. The guys who were getting the cars were nice, but took forever to get our car - apparently at night they take some cars to another garage off property and it takes awhile for them to get the car back. So it was marginal, but in the end, for the price, not a bad deal. (though I would probably not book there again unless I really had to).

Great location, excellent value
I was pleasantly surprised to find none of the problems some earlier customers reported, i.e. no homeless persons curled up outside the doors. A security person, bellman or other uniformed employee was always on duty in the lobby well before you reached the desk, and this person was always very friendly and helpful. The restaurant served excellent food, a little pricey perhaps, but well worth it, and the service was way uptown. While there were no coffeepots in the rooms (this is an historic hotel with wiring to match, I imagine), the Starbucks (reached by a door from the lobby) met coffee needs. The real find for reasonably-priced meals was Sam's Diner, directly across the street from the lobby door. (The the third morning, the waitress had already identified us as a regular and met us with coffeepot and cups in hand!) What made this extra-special for us was the availability of transportation: BART is literally 20 steps from the front door, same as the streetcar/bus stop! The streetcar F line comes by every 10 or 15 minutes and goes down Market Street with stops at all kinds of shopping, the Powell Street Cable Car route terminus, then along the Embarcadero, stops in front of all the cruise/tour terminals and ends at Fisherman's Wharf! What more can a visitor to San Francisco ask? We'll surely stay here again if we are so fortunate as to be able to return.

Hint: Leave your car at home and use the public transportation. Buy the $3 Muni map from the Powell Street Cable Car kiosk (on Powell and Market) -- it shows all the various lines and summarizes times they run, and is the best map I've seen for showing the various areas of San Francisco, i.e. exactly where IS Chinatown? or North Beach?

Quiet Rooms; Great Location
Whether coming from San Francisco Airport or Oakland Airport, this is a great location -- on top of BART station (and Muni). There are homeless around at all hours, but they are not aggressive, and can be found anywhere in downtown SF. Even though there is underground transportaion, as well as street cars outside, the rooms are very quiet. The king bed was very comfortable. The hotwel restaurant was elegant and the food at dinner was fine. Check-in was a little slow this time, but the staff were friendly and competent. Entry to Starbucks through lobby. Make sure you get a room above booster pumps to get the full power shower.
