Luxury meets history, vintage meets modern at Theater District hotel

The Hotel Whitcomb has a place in San Francisco history like no other: Following the 1906 earthquake, the building actually served as City Hall. The majestic Theater District property still looks a lot like it did back then, with crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass and Italian marble columns and floors. Made-to-look-old furniture highlights rooms upstairs, though modern conveniences abound as well. The on-site Market Street Grill serves up basic American fare.

Highlights
  • Historical spot -- the hotel once served as San Francisco's City Hall
  • Located in the Theater District, across Market Street from the Orpheum Theater
  • Ornate preserved lobby
  • Dine on classic American fare at The Market Street Grill
Rooms

High ceilings are common in the Whitcomb's 447 guest rooms and 12 suites. Furniture in these rooms has been specially crafted so it looks old. Accommodations come standard with modern conveniences as well, including flat-screen televisions, ironing boards and spacious workstations. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. The Sunny Jim Suite also includes a wet bar and a dining area.

Features

Marble floors, polished brass fixtures, Tiffany glass and fresh flowers accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area transports guests back to the turn of the 20th Century, when the building briefly served as City Hall. It became a hotel in 1916. It's also a great place to enjoy a coffee and read a complimentary newspaper.

All guests have access to an on-site health and fitness center, dry-cleaning service (fees apply) and transportation to San Francisco International Airport (fees apply).

Grab a homemade Dungeness crab cake at The Market Street Grill, the on-site restaurant. Customers enter through the Tavern Piano Bar, a classic lounge that can get downright boisterous on weekend nights.

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Whitcomb

The hotel is itself a gem, but this was not a great place to stay. There is a gym on the second floor, which we found out about riding the incredibly slow elevator with a hotel maid. The front Desk always seemed understaffed, and seemed to panic whenever a large group appeared. we got into our room on the first night, and my wife found hair all over the bathroom. On the second night, we returned to find a dirty dust cloth on the night stand. The neighborhood is not the best, and the door men do not appear too eager to flag down a cab for you. In fact, the 2 doormen we saw at different times were more than happy to just stand around in the lobby, and ignore the guests walking by. The Front desk did not offer any helpful information when we checked in, nor did they ask how our stay was when we checked out. The one window in the room looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in years, though it did look like someone attempted to reach out to clean it. Overall, this was not the best hotel experience I have had. It was a roof over our head, and we weren't completely disgusted by the room itself. There is much room for improvement though!

Get the Hop-on-hop-off tour tickets. The buses have specific stops, but can get you around the downtown to the many Tourist stops, where you can get off walk around, and hop on the next bus. They come around about every 20 minutes or so, and are incredibly cheaper than cabs everywhere, or parking.

disapointed

The hotel restaurant was closed all weekend. The bathrooms were so small you could hardly turn around in them. TVs were small and there were no assisted paper work for them. No news paper available and the front desk did'nt seem to know what they were doing unless it was checking you in or out. The staff avoided you unless they thought you needed help that would culminate in a tip. At over $550 for three nights plus $35 anight to park your car I expected more. Not only that but the garage was housing for young people on a high.

A good value and good location - I'll come back here

Great historic old building. Market Street is the boundary btwn gentrified Civic Center area to the north and the scruffy Mission district to the south. Very convenient location due to all the bus, streetcar and BART lines right on Market Street. Staff were very nice and helpful and the room very comfortable. There is no heat in the hotel - typical in SF - and it would have been nice to warm up the room at night when the outside temp was 40 deg.

a place to sleep at night

if you're looking for a spacious, super comfortable, spotless, quiet and inexpensive place to stay while in san francisco... keep looking. if you just need a place to crash and watch bad cable tv in a central but disgusting neighborhood of SF than you'll probably be fine with this.

as expected...

The Hotel Whitcomb is a nice hotel in a not-so-nice part of town. Our cab driver from the airport suggested not going outside alone at night. The hotel staff was very nice and accomodating. We didn't spend much time in the room but it waa comfortable and the easy access to the Muni transportation system was great. I would stay again for the price.

Beware - Location is deceiving

As a frequent traveler for business and leisure, I was shocked at this hotel. Location is fine. However, the rooms are unclean, bathrooms are tiny, Internet = a cafe with dial-up, Room Service...? I arrived late in the evening for a business trip and took one look at the room - the old Ac Unit, Ancient TV, Unkept sheets, and musty smell before heading straight back to check-in to check out! IF you choose to stay here, just know that it is 'historic' in the worst ways possible.
