Luxury meets history, vintage meets modern at Theater District hotel

The Hotel Whitcomb has a place in San Francisco history like no other: Following the 1906 earthquake, the building actually served as City Hall. The majestic Theater District property still looks a lot like it did back then, with crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass and Italian marble columns and floors. Made-to-look-old furniture highlights rooms upstairs, though modern conveniences abound as well. The on-site Market Street Grill serves up basic American fare.

Highlights
  • Historical spot -- the hotel once served as San Francisco's City Hall
  • Located in the Theater District, across Market Street from the Orpheum Theater
  • Ornate preserved lobby
  • Dine on classic American fare at The Market Street Grill
Rooms

High ceilings are common in the Whitcomb's 447 guest rooms and 12 suites. Furniture in these rooms has been specially crafted so it looks old. Accommodations come standard with modern conveniences as well, including flat-screen televisions, ironing boards and spacious workstations. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. The Sunny Jim Suite also includes a wet bar and a dining area.

Features

Marble floors, polished brass fixtures, Tiffany glass and fresh flowers accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area transports guests back to the turn of the 20th Century, when the building briefly served as City Hall. It became a hotel in 1916. It's also a great place to enjoy a coffee and read a complimentary newspaper.

All guests have access to an on-site health and fitness center, dry-cleaning service (fees apply) and transportation to San Francisco International Airport (fees apply).

Grab a homemade Dungeness crab cake at The Market Street Grill, the on-site restaurant. Customers enter through the Tavern Piano Bar, a classic lounge that can get downright boisterous on weekend nights.

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Good central SF option

BART right outside front door makes this an easy place to stay and still get to bother neighborhoods quickly/cheaply. Room was pretty nice overall, with comfy bed and chairs. Bathroom was not so great. Low water pressure and LOUD fan that turns on automatically with light. Woke up to smell of cigarettes on fourth morning there: not cool. Last but not least: forgot my phone charger in room. Stopped by later in morning with hazards on in tow zone out front, ran in to ask front desk manager for help, and within 5 minutes he brought it out to me at my car.

Allowed easy Travel around city

The hotel was in a great spot for catching public transportation. If you're not worried about the size of the rooms than its the perfect spot especially if you are going to be out for most of the day. Only con, since its in the middle of downtown, it has negative pedestrian population that will make you feel unsafe to travel outside of the hotel, especailly at night.

Great old hotel

I had a great time and loved the architecture. We drank Moscow Mules in the bar. I woke up in the middle of the night with a white wisp over my bed in a top hat. When I told my friend what I had seen, he told me the hotel was haunted and the staff used to wear top hats. I didn't know that. I plan to stay there when my daughter comes to town in May

Nice place to stay in the financial district

Really loved the age of this hotel - it's a historic hotel. Everything inside the hotel was great - wished they had a small fridge in the room. The area OUTSIDE is strange - lots of construction and homeless people. Not really what you want to walk out to. But the staff, amenities, room comfort, and everything else were top notch. Overall, a great place to stay in the financial district at an unbelievable value price.

Love San Francisco.

We were in San Francisco to visit the @large Ai Weiwei exhibit on Alcatraz. It was a wonderful exhibit and we love San Francisco. Unfortunately the noisy guests in the adjacent hotel room kept us awake our first night there.

great family trip

I went to San Francisco with my sister for 3 days. Whitcomb hotel is located in downtown and closed to the freeways. and also they charge $35 parking for per night. Parking fee is cheaper than other hotel. Hotel staffs are nice and kind. It was great trip with my sister.
