Art-Deco whimsy, 1920s-era grandeur and wine hour near Union Square
The Art-Deco era is alive and well at this boutique Hotel Union Square, which was returned to its 1920s grandeur during an exhaustive renovation in 2008. Today, the hotel features signature staircases and opulent moldings, while loft-like guest rooms boast brick walls and mosaic murals. Another benefit: the world's only Dashiell Hammett Suite, named after the author of "The Maltese Falcon." The property is part of the Personality Hotels Collection. It sits mere blocks from the shopping of Union Square.
Highlights
- Located blocks from Union Square
- Fun and literary inspired Dashiell Hammett Suite
- Funky style and 1920s grandeur
Rooms
Accommodations -- 39 rooms and seven suites -- are infused with the colors of San Francisco: crimson, gray and taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms at the Hotel Union Square are custom-furnished with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark-wood desks, velvety chaise lounges and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors. Many offer stunning views of the city skyline as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. Pets welcome (fees apply).Features
Hotel Union Square is best known for its specialty suites. The Dashiell Hammett Suite is the world's only suite dedicated to the author of "The Maltese Falcon." Apparently, the famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in that very suite on the night before their 1921 wedding. The hotel also features one Kids' Suite. This boasts a cherrywood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, a Nintendo Wii, a writing desk and colorful rugs. The suite also displays a retro-style mixed-media collage of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks.
All guests have access to a modest fitness center off-site; for a more intense workout experience, guests can purchase a pass to the Club One gym located around the corner (fees apply). Visitors also are welcome to join in a complimentary evening wine hour. Dry-cleaning and laundry services are available as well (fees apply).
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Central, modern and affordable
While the reviews referred to small windowless rooms, we found the room to be as follows: -we were upgraded without hassle or cost just as a perk -friedly room cleaners! While we always tip 2.00 day, did not expect a thank you note in return -very clean -very modern - just redone - flat screen TV, IPod docking station, etc -working low noise AC -nice huge bathroom -no window, but good layout made up for it -not being on the street was nice as the main street is very noisy -friendly staff -central as you can get -good price - not the best deal, but considering the amenities, it was a fair trade

Extremely Disappointing
Was in the city for pleasure. The online information for the hotel mase it seem like it was an upscale hotel, when the only thing that was upscale was it's location, close to shopping and transit, right on the cable car line, so it is NOT a quiet hotel. The room was suppoosed to be an executive king.It was a larger room. It had a small, flat screen t.v. No Cable channels available, poor reception on the few channels that were available. Tha carpet looked dirty and worn with tattered corners. Some areas of the walls had paint peeling. The bed was so low, I had a hard time lowering myself into it with my bad hip. I believe all of the furnishings, including the bed were IKEA. Lots of plastic. Very few amenities in the room. Not hsppy for the supposed discounted price we paid. Have stayed in S.F. in another hotel at half the price, and was twice as satisfied. I won't be back.

The hotel was great. The staff was friendly, concierge was very helpful! Valet parking was great..but a car is not needed since there is so much to do in the area! Everything you need is within walking distance.

Short walk from hotel
There is shopping to do ALL AROUND! So be prepared to spend spend spend! You must try to catch a show/concert at the Great American Music Hall - beautiful place. Visit Fisheman's Wharf, Pier 39 and don't forget to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge BUT you must also bike it back - that is an experience in itself! Be sure to visit Muir Woods and visit Saulsalito.

Great... but
As described in the Orbitz hotel review, its right smack in the middle of Union Square. It's very busy with a lot of things to do, no matter what you're looking for i.e. shopping, movies or dinning out. So…, with all the activities it makes the hotel rooms a little unpleasant for sleeping but, overall I was pleased with the hotel, staff and location. I would defiantly recommend to family and friends.

Good but small
The hotel is nice and in a very good location. It has a European feel to it. The room is very small, but comfortable since one should not spend too much time in a hotel when you are in a city like San Francisco. The room was clean and the bathroom a decent size.

Great Trip
Great Hotel. Location could not be better right in the middle of shopping and dining. Easy access to the Cable Cars, BART and Taxi's galore. Spent three days in the city and was very happy with the hotel. The concierge has great knowledge and can get you great deals. Suggest the double decker bus tour great way to see a lot of the city in two hours and you can get on and off. FYI parking lot for the hotel is around the block. Go to the T-junction and make a left it is there on the left.
