Art-Deco whimsy, 1920s-era grandeur and wine hour near Union Square

The Art-Deco era is alive and well at this boutique Hotel Union Square, which was returned to its 1920s grandeur during an exhaustive renovation in 2008. Today, the hotel features signature staircases and opulent moldings, while loft-like guest rooms boast brick walls and mosaic murals. Another benefit: the world's only Dashiell Hammett Suite, named after the author of "The Maltese Falcon." The property is part of the Personality Hotels Collection. It sits mere blocks from the shopping of Union Square.

Highlights
  • Located blocks from Union Square
  • Fun and literary inspired Dashiell Hammett Suite
  • Funky style and 1920s grandeur
Rooms
Accommodations -- 39 rooms and seven suites -- are infused with the colors of San Francisco: crimson, gray and taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms at the Hotel Union Square are custom-furnished with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark-wood desks, velvety chaise lounges and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors. Many offer stunning views of the city skyline as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. Pets welcome (fees apply).
Features
Hotel Union Square is best known for its specialty suites. The Dashiell Hammett Suite is the world's only suite dedicated to the author of "The Maltese Falcon." Apparently, the famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in that very suite on the night before their 1921 wedding.

The hotel also features one Kids' Suite. This boasts a cherrywood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, a Nintendo Wii, a writing desk and colorful rugs. The suite also displays a retro-style mixed-media collage of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks.

All guests have access to a modest fitness center off-site; for a more intense workout experience, guests can purchase a pass to the Club One gym located around the corner (fees apply). Visitors also are welcome to join in a complimentary evening wine hour. Dry-cleaning and laundry services are available as well (fees apply).

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Really small room in a great location

If you don't plan to spend much time lounging in your room, this hotel might work for you. But be warned that the rooms are tiny unless you are used to travel only in Tokyo or London. Also, if you prepay on [...] and need to shorten your stay, there's no refund.

Cruise Ship Room on Land

This is a great hotel for a quick weekend getaway. My wife and I stayed there two nights and enjoyed the vacation. The room was a little small and dark. It reminded me of the lower level rooms of a crusie ship with no windows. Great location. Close to everything.

good location

Great location, hotel us neat and clean. Tasteful decoration, but rooms are small, and don't have individual air condition, i.e., it was hot at night.

Great location

A refrigerator in the room wouldv'e been great to have. The elevator kept on breaking, but we were lucky we stayed on the second floor. But the location was ideal because it was close to the cable car turnaround and the westfield mall.

great location

Good hotel to stay at if u don't plan on spending much time in your room. Location is GREAT! Steps away from the hotel is all the transportation u need and fairly easy to navigate. Cable Cars, Bart train station, other buses are right there. The beds weren't super comfortable as staying at a Hilton but good enough to get you through the nights. There are plenty of restaurants to eat at locally and shopping stores are more than available to you. The staff was very nice and accomodating. My original room was too small for my boyfriend and I so we called the front desk to change it and our needs were fulfilled. Housekeeping was good as well. No DVD player and TV channel selections were poor. An upgrade would be great, small refrigerators would be a great addition too. Not a super big deal but would have been nice to come back to a good show and relax after a long day out.People do want to come back to their room and have something decent to watch and not flip through 7 channels and just hope something is on other than News. If I had to stay here again I would!

wow did it ever smell lemony

it's nice to be at the center of the city, but because it was on the powell cable car line, the room options for us were: in the back with no view, in the front with a view and noise. we opted for no view. location was great, right off of powell bart, so no rental car required to deal with airport or getting around. the staff was pleasant and it was nice that they had wine and coffee (night and morning, respectively). the pretty small room (think europe, or regular san francisco) had the overpowering smell of cleaning products that we couldn't get rid of, no matter how long the window was open. the wi-fi was weak on the 6th floor. but the design of the hotel was great. very well thought through. mostly what sticks out was the smell of the room. other than that, totally right on.

Small cute hotel with great location

The location is perfect, right by Union Square downtown. It's the perfect location if you are planning to do a lot of shopping. The room is quite clean and tidy but is far less impressive compared to the photos shown

Nice location... Average hotel

The location is awesome... Right close to Westfield mall and all the good shopping, etc. however the rooms weren't all that. First room we checked into was super small and had NO AC. I am a girl from Texas... We have To have AC!!!! The front desk was extremely helpful getting us moved to a room that was furnished with a window unit AC. It's a cute place... And for the price is was comfortable for the 4 nights spent there. THe cleaning lady was a doll...SUPER SWEET and very helpful!
