Art-Deco whimsy, 1920s-era grandeur and wine hour near Union Square

The Art-Deco era is alive and well at this boutique Hotel Union Square, which was returned to its 1920s grandeur during an exhaustive renovation in 2008. Today, the hotel features signature staircases and opulent moldings, while loft-like guest rooms boast brick walls and mosaic murals. Another benefit: the world's only Dashiell Hammett Suite, named after the author of "The Maltese Falcon." The property is part of the Personality Hotels Collection. It sits mere blocks from the shopping of Union Square.

Highlights
  • Located blocks from Union Square
  • Fun and literary inspired Dashiell Hammett Suite
  • Funky style and 1920s grandeur
Rooms
Accommodations -- 39 rooms and seven suites -- are infused with the colors of San Francisco: crimson, gray and taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms at the Hotel Union Square are custom-furnished with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark-wood desks, velvety chaise lounges and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors. Many offer stunning views of the city skyline as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. Pets welcome (fees apply).
Features
Hotel Union Square is best known for its specialty suites. The Dashiell Hammett Suite is the world's only suite dedicated to the author of "The Maltese Falcon." Apparently, the famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in that very suite on the night before their 1921 wedding.

The hotel also features one Kids' Suite. This boasts a cherrywood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, a Nintendo Wii, a writing desk and colorful rugs. The suite also displays a retro-style mixed-media collage of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks.

All guests have access to a modest fitness center off-site; for a more intense workout experience, guests can purchase a pass to the Club One gym located around the corner (fees apply). Visitors also are welcome to join in a complimentary evening wine hour. Dry-cleaning and laundry services are available as well (fees apply).

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Stayed at this hotel for 10 nights

Stayed at this hotel for 10 nights in late October/early November 2009 with my adult daughter. It was excellent for a central location in San Francisco. The complementary wine was a boost at the end of the day and Tom the concierge was a fount of useful advice and information. It was a surprisingly quiet area at night. If you are a walker, it is an easy 50 minute hike to Fisherman's Wharf. Otherwise the cable car is 2 minutes away. The room was not large, but larger than hotels stayed at in NY. Surprisingly there was no bar fridge in the room - there ice machines in the hallways. Having booked the room over the Net, for its location and standard it was a very good choice. I'd recommend it.

Location, location, location.

I personally loved the hotel because of the neighborhood (in the Union Square fashion district) and the location (close to the historic and really handy Cable Car and Street Car lines) and the hip styling of a hotel with real personality. The rooms were a little Spartan... a bed, a chair, water closet and sink, but when your in San Francisco all your going to do is sleep there anyhow. The entire hotel was clean and well taken care of, the staff was courteous, and the concierge was really handy to have when hailing cabs and finding cool spots for great meals. The hotel has no restaurant, but considering how many good places to eat in 2 or 3 blocks your not going to miss it. Free coffee in the morning and wine tasting in the afternoon makes the hotel lobby a nice social spot to visit with other tourists and business travelers.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

San Francisco's historic (and really handy for tourist transport) Cable Car runs right in front of the hotel. You can catch the Cable Car at the turn around right up the street or at the corner just down the block. That Cable Car will take you to all the spots you want to visit in North Beach (little Italy), China Town, and of course Fisherman's Wharf.

Fantastic Location, horrible mattress

Fantastic location if you're looking to do some serious shopping. Chinatown and the convention center are also close by. But the mattress was absolutely awful. My back is still hurting from how soft and springy the mattress was. The room itself was fine, just realize that its an old hotel with limited space in the bathroom. This is a small hotel so don't expect the workout rooms or dining options. With some many other places to chose from, why stay and eat at the hotel?

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Bourban and Branch is a speakeasy place that does not serve food. But, they do serve the best cocktails in town. You have to call in advance and get a password. Oh, and dont use your cell phone.

I'll Be Back

My wife & I spent 3 days at Hotel Union Square for a much needed vacation. This hotel has a very European feel to it & unique decorations. Located in the heart of Union Square, everything was really accessible either by walking or taking public transportation. The one time we had to take a taxi, it was less than $10, including tip, to where we wanted to go. The only issues we had were that you could hear other people if they had their TV loud & the bathroom didn't have an air vent. Besides that, it was a nice stay. We will definitely go back if every go to SF to get away from it all.

Fit our Needs Nicely!

Everyone was really nice, very helpful at the concierge desk. Nice touch to offer wine in the evenings even though we never made it! I liked the location. We would stay here again for sure!

Central location and staff helpful.

Central location and staff helpful. We had booked a small room based on previous experience of rooms in the States. However here when you book small you get small - we could not have stayed here without paying for an upgrade.

No Good!

THE SMELL OF THE ENTIRE PLACE WAS TERRIBLE. THERE WAS NO AIR CONDITIONING IN THE HOTEL OR ROOM. THE WINDOW WAS RIGGED NOT TO OPEN MORE THAN ONE INCH. WHEN WE RETURNED TO THE ROOM, WE HAD NO TOWELS TO BATH WITH. BAD NEWS. PASS ON THIS PLACE!

A good place to stay if you are prepared

I stayed at this hotel during an exceptionally busy convention weekend in SF. I had read reviews warning about room size and noise, and was prepared. I reserved a room with two double beds, which seemed to give more space. As for the noise, well...it is right on Powell, which is very noisy, however the room I stayed in had a window a/c unit, which I turned on to "fan only" and that drowned out a lot of the noise. The hotel doesn't have central air due to age and structure of the building, but it is SF, which rarely requires a/c. The staff were REALLY great - nice and helpful. I had been on really long flights through several time zones, and arrived a couple of hours before check-in. My room was ready and the bed was very comfy! Definitely try out the wine tasting each evening from 5-7; it's fun and the wines were pretty good! If you are in SF for fun and a good downtown experience, then definitely stay here. Just be prepared for small rooms (I've stayed in MUCH SMALLER in NYC and Tokyo), and some noise.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

This hotel is less than a block from the Powell BART station. Take the BART from SFO to the Powell station, then it's only a very short walk to the hotel. The BART ride is about $8 - a great deal! It is also in the middle of great shopping...you can't put a price on that!

Small Wonder

I loved this hotel!! Step out the front door and you step right onto the cable car or the BART. It's located on Powell Street, which must be a very popular street in SF because there were people everywhere. The room was very small yet superbly decorated and exceptionally clean; I wasn't even afraid to sit on the bed comforter/duvet. The staff was very professional and available. Dining, shopping (both high end & discount), entertainment, convenience stores (e.g., Walgreens), Starbucks on every corner......you name it, this hotel is encircled by it all. I'd definitely stay there again.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

If you come to shop, this is the place for you. Walk around one corner and you're at Ross, walk around another corner and you're at Saks Fifth Avenue. And if you come to eat, you won't be disappointed as there are restaurants everywhere.
