Art-Deco whimsy, 1920s-era grandeur and wine hour near Union Square

The Art-Deco era is alive and well at this boutique Hotel Union Square, which was returned to its 1920s grandeur during an exhaustive renovation in 2008. Today, the hotel features signature staircases and opulent moldings, while loft-like guest rooms boast brick walls and mosaic murals. Another benefit: the world's only Dashiell Hammett Suite, named after the author of "The Maltese Falcon." The property is part of the Personality Hotels Collection. It sits mere blocks from the shopping of Union Square.

Highlights
  • Located blocks from Union Square
  • Fun and literary inspired Dashiell Hammett Suite
  • Funky style and 1920s grandeur
Rooms
Accommodations -- 39 rooms and seven suites -- are infused with the colors of San Francisco: crimson, gray and taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms at the Hotel Union Square are custom-furnished with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark-wood desks, velvety chaise lounges and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors. Many offer stunning views of the city skyline as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. Pets welcome (fees apply).
Features
Hotel Union Square is best known for its specialty suites. The Dashiell Hammett Suite is the world's only suite dedicated to the author of "The Maltese Falcon." Apparently, the famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in that very suite on the night before their 1921 wedding.

The hotel also features one Kids' Suite. This boasts a cherrywood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, a Nintendo Wii, a writing desk and colorful rugs. The suite also displays a retro-style mixed-media collage of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks.

All guests have access to a modest fitness center off-site; for a more intense workout experience, guests can purchase a pass to the Club One gym located around the corner (fees apply). Visitors also are welcome to join in a complimentary evening wine hour. Dry-cleaning and laundry services are available as well (fees apply).

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Convenient

We chose this hotel because of it's location and price. We were only in SF one day and wanted something that was reasonably priced and close to everything. This hotel was exactly that. Not over the top but a comfortable clean hotel in the middle of everything. Rooms are small but it was clean and the noise wasn't bad at all. They offer a service to the airport which was even better since we left at 5am.

Great place to see all of San Francisco!

We were a little shocked when we saw the size of our room as it was tiny! But if you're looking for a clean room in a great location look no further. All concierge that we spoke with there were very nice and more than helpful to us first timers in the city. only real downside of this place is the size of the rooms. But if you're looking to explore, you're only sleeping there anyway!

Average, but the location makes it awesome

To manage your expectations, the hotel is average. The room we received was on the street on the 3rd floor, but it was too noisy. The rooms were clean but needed something. They were contemporary but not at the same time. I did not see a clock in the room, the shower was clean but small. The bathrooms were very small with no vanity or place for your things. The room was suitable for the trip. You don't go to San Francisco to stay in the room anyway. All in all, I would stay there again if the price is right.

John's- This little gem is right around the corner. A jazz player is upstairs and the location is great. Prices are a little hefty for the quality of the food, but it was a nice date-night experience. You can dress casually, enjoy the music and still have a nice dinner. We brought a bottle of wine that we bought in Napa the day before and they let us, no problem. Only a $20 corking fee and the server took great care to ensure that it was chilled to the proper temperature so that we could enjoy it.

Amazing Couples Trip

Upon arrival our first impression was amazing. the hotel was clean and the executive king suite was spacious and colorful. The complimentary wine hour was neat- live music and free wine for one hour before you have your dinner. Great location near shopping in Union Square and near a lot of great restaurants that are all walking distance from the hotel. The trolley starts in front of the hotel and ends near the wharf. The concierge was very helpful in suggesting restaurants and then making the reservations for us to make sure we had a table. Would definitely stay there again on my next trip out to San Fran!

Location, location, location.

The location of the hotel was great for us, right on the cable car line and muni transport and to get around San Fran. A short walk from the Bart to get to and from SFO. The look of the hotel, lobby and room was pleasant. The elevator went to the second floor, but you'll have to carry your suitcase up some stairs to get to your room if you are in the section we were in. Our room was small and we had a view of of a brick wall, but we don't travel to hang out in a hotel room so we didn't mind. Our room was quiet at night for sleeping which was preferable. The bed was quite comfortable, but the pillows lacked any substance. The ceiling fan was beneficial as the room could get stuffy. The flat screen TV and IPOD dock were nice to have. The dresser provided was basically useless, you had two drawers and had the depth to place three shirts if you were lucky. There just wasn't much room to take things out of your suitcase to access easier. We had the smallest bathroom I have ever seen in a hotel, which was our issue. The toilet paper was placed so low on the wall, it was odd. There was no fan in the bathroom, but we had a small window which went to small shaft, so we could vent the room after showering. The sink was so small you couldn't wash your face without washing the floor. The faucet took up all the limited space to access the sink. There was no vanity to place any toiletries and no shelf to place anything, if that was rectified if would have been more user friendly. Mid way thru our stay we placed our door tag for maid service as we were going to be out and about all day, we received none at all. When we returned late and discovered our room hadn't been touched, we had to contact the front desk to get clean towels at least. This is my second trip to San Fran and I wouldn't stay here again as there are so many hotel choices downtown. If there had been better storage provided it would have changed our feeling about our stay immensely, but you can't change a first impression.

Lost in a drab place

My room felt a little prison like...weird colors, furniture, and rugs. The room was clean, the bed was very comfortable, but I had to iron my shirts on my knees.

Funky Says it all Old hotel in union square. Great lookout onto the street. Actually slept well. But decor is a little left to be desired. They tried to update it. But still kinda smells and little tired in some places. One night was enough. But great location.
