Art-Deco whimsy, 1920s-era grandeur and wine hour near Union Square

The Art-Deco era is alive and well at this boutique Hotel Union Square, which was returned to its 1920s grandeur during an exhaustive renovation in 2008. Today, the hotel features signature staircases and opulent moldings, while loft-like guest rooms boast brick walls and mosaic murals. Another benefit: the world's only Dashiell Hammett Suite, named after the author of "The Maltese Falcon." The property is part of the Personality Hotels Collection. It sits mere blocks from the shopping of Union Square.

Highlights
  • Located blocks from Union Square
  • Fun and literary inspired Dashiell Hammett Suite
  • Funky style and 1920s grandeur
Rooms
Accommodations -- 39 rooms and seven suites -- are infused with the colors of San Francisco: crimson, gray and taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms at the Hotel Union Square are custom-furnished with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark-wood desks, velvety chaise lounges and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors. Many offer stunning views of the city skyline as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. Pets welcome (fees apply).
Features
Hotel Union Square is best known for its specialty suites. The Dashiell Hammett Suite is the world's only suite dedicated to the author of "The Maltese Falcon." Apparently, the famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in that very suite on the night before their 1921 wedding.

The hotel also features one Kids' Suite. This boasts a cherrywood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, a Nintendo Wii, a writing desk and colorful rugs. The suite also displays a retro-style mixed-media collage of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks.

All guests have access to a modest fitness center off-site; for a more intense workout experience, guests can purchase a pass to the Club One gym located around the corner (fees apply). Visitors also are welcome to join in a complimentary evening wine hour. Dry-cleaning and laundry services are available as well (fees apply).

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Great location, clean, quiet + parking

Would highly recommend spending a couple dollars more to avoid the "Petite Queen" room. There was barely enough room to walk around the end of the bed to get to the bathroom. Opening the door to the hallway would have been impossible if someone had been sitting in the task chair at the desk. The room really was pretty tiny. I did see other rooms, and the "regular" queen rooms were quite nice.

Really small room in a great location

If you don't plan to spend much time lounging in your room, this hotel might work for you. But be warned that the rooms are tiny unless you are used to travel only in Tokyo or London. Also, if you prepay on [...] and need to shorten your stay, there's no refund.

Well, it has a great "Personality"

After an enjoyable and quick check-in experience, a quick ride up to the top (6th) floor, and a winding trip down the corridors to your room (629), you open the door to a 10 foot square, dark room. Your horror begins.Entering, your shin bumps into something, and you stop, search for, and find the light switch. After some experimentation (where you find that the 1-5 scale on the sliders is calibrated such that '1' is the dimmest light, but the fastest ceiling fan speed), you realize that what your shin has encountered is in fact your mini-queen bed, looking lovely with many pillows, but with about an 18 inch clearance around it on three sides. With the lights on, you look around the room in a clockwise direction, from where you've entered. You are in the lower right corner of the room, and to your immediate left, you see a flat screen TV on the wall; something to dodge when travelling in that direction if you're more than about three feet tall. The left wall is filled with a LARGE porthole-styled mirror, giving an illusion of depth, and a door. The wall opposite you has a small radiator, the head of the bed, and a small nightstand with a phone, a clock radio, and a space beneath it filled with a few books. The right wall has a two foot square nook with a shelf holding a splendid array of four cleansing liquids, a pair of drinking glasses, and a hair dryer in a bag, as well as a window to an enclosed oubliette of some sort, and a small pedestal sink. The remainder of the wall holds another door.Behind the doors? One holds a triangular closet with an ironing board, an iron, a small shelf with an extra pillow above a dowel with six hangers on it, and not much room for much else. The other has a bathroom, with a shower enclosure with a glass wall but no door, just an opening to get in, as well as a toilet that barely affords enough room to sit down, although there is a protrusion in the wall to the right that stops you from sitting in alignment with the seat. There is NO coffee maker in this room, but there IS an iPud plug for the clock radio. Sigh.Staff? Was great. Noise? No notice while sleeping, doors tended to slam when closing and were very audible. No notice of other people's talking or TV. Spent 2 days, housekeeping was excellent, refilled everything as requested. With warning that the room was smaller than the cells in Alcatraz, I might have been okay...or I might have gone elsewhere.[...]

Time-saving tip: In Hotel

24 hour 'business center' (key at the front desk) has a desktop computer with a decent printer, paper, and a cooling fan (turn it on when you go in!). Definitely worthwhile for printing needs while there. Not a 'secure installation' type machine, so be wary of what you access while on it, but definitely a plus convenience in time and money for things like Boarding Passes or directions.

Very quaint

Hotel experience was very good, clean and helpful on informing where to go and location, location, location was awe. When we got off the plane we jumped on the Bart and landed half a block of the hotel. we never even thought of the need of a car. this was so cool. next morning took the trolly car to Pier 39 and spent day walking the different piers and went to Alcatraz. Next day went to Oakland on the Bart came back went to Golden gate park, trasportation was so available. We did it all, get ready to see it all from this Hotel Location!!

Hotel Union Square

I was really surprised at how small the room was in the hotel. It was nice, clean, and well appointed but it was really dinky and dark. I almost felt a bit claustrophoibic. The front desk person ([...]) was really nice, responsive, and very helpful. The morning staff was good, as well. I bought a package so I don't know how much the room cost so I don't know if I received good value. I hope it wasn't much. I've stayed in many hotels in SF over the years. This was my least memorable experience.

Not bad.

rooms were very tiny and lack of room service were both negatives. however, great location, nice staff, free wine tasting every night 6-7pm.. did i mention great location. the free wi-fi was a mixed bag, it worked, but if you were inactive for more than 5 minutes, you get booted and have to login all over again. not the greatest. you could stay at st. regis down the block for double the price, but really, how much time do you spend in a hotel room anyway.

Wickedly Fun Weekend

Go back again and again

My friends and I were in San Francisco to see "Wicked" at the Orpheum Theatre and used Hotel Union Square as a our "home base." We did enjoy the stay, beds were nicer than okay, low to the ground though. The bathroom however was very small and we did a lot of getting ready in the entire room. Plenty of outlets to plug in the various hair things, and laptop and the in-home iHome was awesome for pump-up music. The hotel is very easy to get in and out of and very close to the greatest shopping locations. For a girls weekend this place was perfect! They even printed our return flight boarding passes for us the night before making the transition from hotel to airport seamless. P.S. parking is expensive there- $30 for 24 hour valet for guests and more for others. So two days is another $60 on the total....three is $90 and so forth, It adds up really quick!

Wonderful Stay at Hotel Union Square

We were in San Francisco to attend Wonder-con. The hotel was perfect for us. It is a matter of blocks from the Moscone Center so it only took a few minutes to walk to the convention each day. The rooms are true to the pictures. We had a deluxe queen size room with a good size bathroom. The closet was tiny but there was a decent sized dresser for our clothes. Our unit was on the 3rd floor directly on Powell Street. We could hear the cable cars and traffic but only faintly. We really enjoyed our stay!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

We had dinner at Farallon on Post which was a short walk. This restaurant is amazing! The food was delicious and the restaurant itself was beyond words. It was designed to look like the restaurant itself is underwater. They even have chandeliers made to look like jellyfish and giant sea urchins. Everywhere you look you are reminded that you are in an underwater fantasy! The service was impeccable! I would recommend this restaurant especially to couples looking for a romantic dinner.
