Fun place, but a bit expensive for what you get

My Japan-obsessed daughters loved this anime-themed hotel, but for the price, I feel it should have been a little more special. The anime-style knickknacks that are featured in all the promotional material are all but missing from the rooms, and the lobby was not much to speak of. That said, the staff at the counter were very helpful, and the room was very clean and comfortable. If it had been about $50 less, I would have considered it a good deal.

A cozy hotel tucked away in Japantown

Hotel Tomo advertises itself as an anime/ Japanese pop culture themed hotel located in the heart of San Francisco's Japantown. When we arrived in San Francisco we took an easy 35 minute cab ride to Hotel Tomo. From the outside the hotel isn't flashy or showy, just a simple yellow facade situated on the corner of Sutter street. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We arrived about 45 minutes before check in time but the hotel had already prepared our room and allowed us to check in. The hotel is quite colorful and there are fun pop culture murals to be found in the elevators, restaurant, and hotel rooms. Our room sported a colorful deer design and a fantastic view looking out over the Japan town square. The room was clean and we had easy access to free wifi. The bathroom area was good sized and fully stocked with Toiletries (shampoo, soap, cotton swabs). My only minor disappointment in the room was the pared back appearance of the room compared to the images on the website. The website showed hotel rooms filled with balcony window throw pillows, flowers and fun toys. I understand the pictures were dressed up to promote but the reality versus the website were downright spartan in appearance. Nonetheless the room was still cute and very comfortable. I had read several reviews complaining about the beds being uncomfortable. The beds here are platform beds which are a bid firmer that beds that are supported by slats or box springs. I can see where someone who is not use to a platform bad may find them uncomfortable although I found them to be quite restful. The second floor of the hotel features a restaurant called Cafe Mums. The restaurant specializes in shabu shabu- a Japanese meat dish which involves boiling meat in a pot. The restaurant serves western and japanese style breakfast. Guest can choose from pancakes, waffles, bacon, ham and eggs or a traditional Japanese breakfast of rice and fish. For about $12 I enjoyed a pancake and sausage breakfast with milk and fresh orange slice. Lunch selections were more varied offering shabu shabu dishes as well as western sandwiches. The hotel was very quiet and I found that it's location provided easy access to all of San Francisco. The main shopping mall in Japantown as well the New People center was an easy walking distance of the hotel. The Muni bus system also had a bus stop outside the hotel lobby which provided easy access to travel to parts of San Francisco. Union Square, the main shopping area was about 1.5 miles away and could be walked to if one was so inclined. Our stay was very quiet with exception to some traffic noises during the day. We did lots of walking to nearby Japantown which featured lots of restaurants and shopping. We took a short taxi ride to The presidio and visited Walt Disney family museum as well as Golden Gate Park. Coming home in the evenings we found the hotel to be equally quiet and restful. The hotel tomo staff were extremely pleasant and courteous. Staff were knowledgable about restaurants in the area, provided menus to local delivery places and even helped us navigate the Muni bus system or called us a cab when needed. The hotel also offers a shuttle service to the airport which saved us money when we began our trip home. Hotel Tomo isn't fancy or glitzy but it was a comfortable and pleasant place to stay in gorgeous San Francisco. The hotel's courteous and knowledgeable staff really made us feel welcomed and created a stay that was stress free and relaxing. In an industry where people sometime try to wow guests with gimmicks and deals Hotel Tomo succeeded with kind, courteous customer service - the rarest of amenities.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

The San Francisco bus system Muni is a bit complicated and terribly uncomfortable. Bring money for taxis when you need to travel to places that are harder to get to. Hotel Tomo is close to many things but is located in the hills of the city. The steep hills may be difficult to walk for someone with a physical disability or not in the best of shape.

Between the road trip!

It was good experience in middle of the Japanese town:) BUT the parking lot was wayyy tooo expensive! $29 per night that you are staying.?? Wow... Well my bf asked the lady who works in the front desk that why is it so expensive and she said that is the cheapest parking lot in SF hotel. Well few months ago we stayed near Nob Hill hotel and parking lot wasn't that expensive. It was between $15-20. Anyway according to the lady it was the chepeast. She sounded like she wants to fight or something. Oh well lady we won't see you again. When you are staying at this hotel you can park at this Japanese Center Garage overnight for $23 and it is really near the hotel ! Other than the parking lot issue, it was good experience to stay!

Perfect if visiting SF with car

Clean rooms, friendly staff, SF is not a big city, at least for us which drove to SF down from San Diego moving around town was easy and all the places we wanted to visit where close to the hotel, nothing more than 15 minutes away. Parking at the hotel is very limited, but you have many options to park over night, its just a matter of looking around the streets near the hotel or in the Japan Town parking structure. Oh, and if you love Japanese cuisine, you will feel as if you landed in heaven, because just across the hotel you have Japan Town and a series of Japanese treats and restaurants… don't miss Mifune...
