Incredibly disappointing

Tomo's website is extremely misleading; there's nothing chic about it, Japantown is not all that exciting, and the decor is significantly less modern than it claims. I was embarrassed to show my friends where I was staying. I also had a number of issues with my room (the water didn't drain, the heat wouldn't turn off, there was no hot water for a day) and the staff's response boiled down to a polite version of "too bad". I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Not Worth the Value

The Best Western Hotel Tomo, San Francisco, California was not breath-taking or deserving of any top hotel write-ups. The quality of the room furnishings were simply from Ikea.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

The sites of San Francisco - the Golden Gate Park, Lafeyette Park, the San Francisco trolley, the 'crookiest street', are all within a brisk walking distance. There is other modes of transportation, but not for the feint of heart.

Nice area, thats about all

my bad experience started with a rude front desk person who answered the phone call I made to confirm the reservation. The room was small (double Queen with balcony). The furniture looks like they might have picked it up on sale at Ikea (at best). Looked lie it belonged in a kindergarten or perhaps came from one. The hot water for the shower was luke warm alternating with cold.

Kind of awful

I guess I had a special room--down the hall from the restaurant and across the hall from the employee locker room. The carpeting was scary dirty and stained and the walls are thin. There were some good points--the bed was comfortable with clean bedding and the bathroom seemed clean. Would not recommend this to a friend.

it's hot in here

While the room we received was reasonably quiet, the first night was spent listening to the toilet run (they did fix it) and tossing and turning in the stuffy room. At first we thought we were just confused by the fancy thermostat but finally after two nights of restlessness, a guy came to "fix" it. It worked for a few hours but we came back late and it was broken again so a third night with tossing and turning. They really should have given us a new room. I mean it was a Monday in April. I think they maybe had two guests. I know in SF AC is not usually mandatory but this was unreasonably warm and the lack of AC truly made this stay unbearable, and with a staff that half the time doesn't even answer the phone - when you are IN the hotel calling from your room - and the reasonably high cost, we won't be back.

Hotel Tomo is different

The Best Western Miyako Inn is being renovated into the Hotel Tomo which I think is the name of a Japanese cartoon. When I stayed there, they were still working on it and it showed. Oh well, the price was right and I needed to be in the neighborhood. Whether I will ever go back depends on the price. If I can get a good price I will go only because of the location. Otherwise, I won't They should fire their new decorator. If they were trying to be a cartoon, they succeeded. The rooms have bare wood frames with the front of the cabinets painted like a child's room in color and design. There were corners sticking out that I kept hitting. The famous mural on my wall was in loud colors and design and was of two crying children one of which had her head cut off at the top by a vent. I was not impressed. There were two hard plastic chairs in the room, and a giant bean bag which was too big to put anywhere if I was crazy enough to sit on it. What were they thinking?

Adequate hotel stay with kids

I decided to take the girls with me to spend a weekend in SF over the Memorial Day weekend. Visited the Academy of Sciences and enjoyed the Shabu Shabu dinner in the hotel. I chose this restaurant because I knew that it was recently remodeled with a Japanese comic theme and I thought the girls would enjoy it as well. Also, I knew that I'd find street parking readily in that neighborhood. Service was nothing to write home about; adequate but not too eager to please. Our visit was satisfactory but I'm not sure I'd stay here again. The beds were a bit uncomfortable for me.

Kind of neat and trendy, comfortable...

I had reserved a balcony room (which cost more) and did not get it! Probably because they had lost my reservation! Good thing I had printed out my confirmation. When I talk to the front desk they could not credit anything back to me and they had no balcony rooms available so they gave us free parking for the two night we were there(a $52 value). On 2nd day, our toilet stopped working. Other than those things, everything else was very nice. Front desk had a surprise grab bag for my daughter, who is 7. That's a neat touch for anyone with kids. We were main street side and the noise wasn't too bad. Inside the hotel was quiet also. Japan town is fairly small, but we easily caught the #47 line to the Fisherman's Warf. Shopping isn't too far from there either. Just map out where you're walking to or you'll end up in a not so nice part of town!!

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

Map out the streets and bus line (trolley or street car) and you'll save a lot of time and a lot of unnecessary walking. Be prepared to pay and on the street car, you don't get change back!
