About average

Good: unique aesthetic, murals on the ceiling and walls; family-friendly; walking distance to many japantown venues and movie theatre. Not as horrible as some of the reviews here - will refill your soap, shampoo, and conditioner Bad: loud noises from people leaving the restaurant and doors slamming can be heard at night. parking is very hard to find and the garage was full almost every day we were there. the staff will suggest you to park at a nearby garage, but will not validate your ticket. however, parking is hard to find in general all around san francisco, so this is not really a surprise. your pillow cases are not changed daily and the ground is not vacuumed from what i can tell. still pretty expensive overall

Very nice and pleasant

It has a unique feel, as if you're entering a Kindergarten classroom with all the whimsical decor -- it's bright, spacious, clean and the people are very friendly. Loved the room and the amenities -- the gym is small but on the treadmill it has a great view of the city. Will definitely stay there again.

Bento Box of Goodness

Tired of the hassle, hustle and noise of downtown/Union Square SF hotels? We have usually stayed in what some call "Lower Nob Hill" (others, call it the "TenderNob" - where Nob Hill butts up against the Tenderloin). We decided to try Hotel Tomo in the much quieter - but no less interesting -- location of Japantown and very close to Fillmore. Even having a garden-level, street-side room, the noise level was nothing like DT SF hotels. We enjoyed the funky room decor, excellent showerheads, free WiFi and great location. They definitely understand the modern "wired" traveller. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Queen size room was very spacious for two. Dangerously close to the the Japantown mall, where you could spend all your money on food and "necessary" things at Ichibankan or Daiso. The hotel is minimalist modern, so don't expect breakfast in the lobby or a wine reception at night, (there are PLENTY of great places to eat and drink around the area) but all the basics are covered. Though not close to a BART station, it is close to many bus lines and, if you feel up to a 20-25 min walk, you can walk from the Civic Center/UN Plaza BART Station.

A few blocks west on Sutter is an excellent breakfast restaurant called "Sweet Maple." Definitely worth the short walk.

Great for what it is

I thought Tomo was very interesting and unique. I just ultimately wished I'd stayed at a more traditional hotel. It was clean and everyone was nice, so that's all you can really ask for.

Incredibly disappointing

Tomo's website is extremely misleading; there's nothing chic about it, Japantown is not all that exciting, and the decor is significantly less modern than it claims. I was embarrassed to show my friends where I was staying. I also had a number of issues with my room (the water didn't drain, the heat wouldn't turn off, there was no hot water for a day) and the staff's response boiled down to a polite version of "too bad". I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Nice and cozy

My friend and I stayed at Tomo for 3 nights before attending a conference in SF and found this hotel great! The room is spacious and clean. The wonderful thing is that it has great staff!! We had many questions from where to eat to how to turn on the water at the shower and they were more than being helpful to us. They even let us check out an hour later than usual so we had more time to browser around. I will definitely go back if I come to SF visiting again!

I'd stay there again

Parking is a challenge, even with the small hotel ramp. Walls could be better noise insulated. Not enough plugs. And a single comfy reading chair or couch would be nice. Great view from our room. Great price. Great location. We'd stay there again.
