Great place to stay for fun in San Fran.
The room on the street was a bit noisy, but the one off the street was nice and quiet. Friendly service, clean, comfy, close to the street car stop and other transportation, breakfast ok. Would stay here again.

Not bad for the price, but not good for much more...
The location is awesome. The staff was friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that if you are expecting luxurious acommodations, this aint da place. We should have expected what we got for the price. A very minimalist room. Clean, with a view of the wall 10 feet away. Good news is, it was quiet given that we weren't on the street. But the room was very small, no A/C (nice fan though). Definitely, a simple room for sleeping.

Would go back but ONLY for the location!
This was a bad hotel experience. If the location wasn't such a prime spot, I would have checked out early and found another hotel. The hotel is right in the heart of Union Square. The cable car stops in front of the hotel, which is super convenient. However, the staff is rude and not helpful. For example, we were told to call 20 minutes ahead of time to bring our car from Valet, which we did, but we still ended up waiting another 25 minutes for the car. In other words, it took them 45 minutes to bring out the car from Valet and not even one apology for making us wait that long. A simple apology would have gone a long way. The room was very small but it wouldn't matter if the customer service wasn't so horrible. I would recommend to others only if all they care about is to be in a prime location.

One night stay
I wanted to get a decent price room for just one night for my boyfriend and I while we were visiting friends in SF. We didn't want to have to worry about driving back to the south bay. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and the stay at the Stratford was totally worth it. The staff was friendly, and for the price and location it was perfect.

Not a bad stay, could be better
I came for a conference. The hotel was comfortable and conveniently located, and not too expensive. I wouldn't mark it off my list of hotels to go to, but I do have a few primary complaints: -The water pressure in the shower was horribly low -Who doesn't have complimentary internet these days? -The pay internet had a pretty bad signal -The breakfast can be described as "things you can toast." Except there was no butter. Who has a breakfast primarily made up of toasted bread, but doesn't supply butter?

Location is awesome for the price!
The rooms were small and the beds were not as comfortable as I would have liked. However, the rooms were very clean which is important!! Overall, the location, shops and dining made the hotel stay worth while.

Great place, handled [...] mistake well
This hotel is perfectly situated to get around in San Francisco. It's right on Union Square, the cable car line, and near train and bus stops. Room was clean and perfectly adequate, with a great view of Powell Street. The street noise can be a bit loud, but the hotel provides earplugs on request. I didn't need them, though. The hotel also handled a mistake made by [...] quite well. [...]

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
The cable cars are cool, and may be fun to ride once, but the buses will get you anywhere you need to go for much cheaper. Riding the bus will also get you a free transfer that you can use to ride any other bus (or the streetcar line) for the next few hours.

Location Location
Great Location and very friendly Service. Rooms smallish but very clean. The included breakfast was awful. Get a room on the lower levels as the elevator is S L O W .....

On a budget but not willing to settle
Fantastic location - would go back
Generally, we would recommend the Hotel Stratford to people going to San Francisco and on a budget. It's in a great location - literally a half a block from Union Square, surrounded by fabulous shopping, and two blocks from the cable cars & BART. We rented what they call the Family room - it has two adjoined rooms with a queen bed & two doubles between them, as well as one smallish bathroom - and we got a good price compared to what we would have had to pay elsewhere to be able to sleep the same number of people. Two drawbacks: the hotel does not have airconditioning (like many others in SF) and we were there during a heat wave, AND the room facing Powell Street was fairly noisy. However, these were balanced by the fact that the staff at the desk were very knowledgeable of the area, and there were several choices for VERY early morning breakfasts since we were still on East Coast time and out the door at 5 each day. Another fun thing for our children was that we were literally the only Americans we met staying there - everyone else was from a different country so they got to hear lots of different languages. We will be back in SF in two years and will plan to stay at the hotel again, assuming nothing changes with the ownership / pricing. It's a really solid choice, in my opinion.

Sightseeing tip:
Not Applicable
Alcatraz really is a pretty cool attraction, but be sure you book ahead of time. If you're in town at a time that is even reasonably touristy, they WILL sell out.
