The on-site restaurant, Anzu, serves up Asian food with a Japanese focus. Distances at the on-site pool are measured in meters. Just steps from Union Square and the Moscone Convention Center, the Nikko is perfectly located for business travelers in town for conventions. At the same time, it is comfortable for families accustomed to sophisticated luxury.

Room with a view

The first room we were shown (we arrived 10pm on Thanksgiving night) was on the 18th floor, but we found outselves staring into the penthouse suite of a building directly in front of us. Lights/TVs were all on; nobody home. Not the kind of view we had in mind.... The second room had a much better view, but it was on the 14th floor. It was smaller than the previous room, but we just took it. It was basically clean and comfortable, except for an unattractively stained carpet. When I had asked, upon check-in, whether it was true that if we even touched an item in the mini-bar we would be charged for it, I was told yes. Would we like a small refrigerator brought in? We said yes, and it arrived immediately. After two nights in this room, we negotiated for an upgrade to one of the top-floor rooms. It was spectacular! Wonderful vista of the city and part of the bay. There were a number of luxurious touches, such as a small TV screen built into the bathroom mirror, and a scale in the bathroom. There were two luggage racks, and room to set them up. Guests on the 24th floor also have access to the business floor lounge one floor below. This included wine, soda, cheese and crackers from 5 to 7pm. I noticed that the usual bathroom amenities (shampoo, lotion, etc.) were BIGGER in the top-floor room! Our room was quiet; could not a hear a sound from adjoining rooms, and we especially like the feature that involves pushing a button for 1)Maid service requested or 2)Privacy please. Guess a light goes off somewhere in housekeeping. This was the first time we stayed in the Union Square area. It is a wonderful location, with easy access to all public transportation. When it was time to leave, the outside valets really pushed for us to use a taxi to the airport. We used the airport shuttle anyway; every bit as fast and convenient, and costs less.

Great location, friently staff, heating/cooling system a little lacking

The location, staff, cleanliness and bathroom were excellent. The hotel has steam heat and we found the system lacking. We visited at the end of November and the heating system seemed non-existent. When we called the staff, they were very efficient in sending a repairman. He made an adjustment which put the heat over the top and we were unable to cool the room. Just couldn't seem to fine tune the adjustments. Although this was a little uncomfortable, the positives would definitely bring us back. We visit San Francisco once a year and will probably stay again next year. It is very convenient to Union Square, the Muni, and Bart (which we took from the Airport at a cost of $5.25 per person). Fast, convenient and very reasonable.

great location, union ...

great location, union square is the place to be, lots of great shopping around, some restaurants, easy access to tourist information center, MUNI, BART, bus lines. Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. Room was quiet, daily newspaper, clean, bathroom + furniture top notch. Downside: 1-too many scary homeless people on every street corner(not hotel management fault), 2- mini bar items are very expensive and you cant move (and i mean move) anything in it or you get automatically charged for the item as it is electronically billed to your room even though you did not eat/drink it! (so weird), on top of that, you cant put anything inside that mini bar cause if you move anything (read above). OVERALL i recommend this hotel.

Every Little Thing Costs

The Hotel Nikko had impressive marble floors in the expansive lobby, which I guess is part of being a four-star hotel. Our room was comfortable (the beds were really comfortable), though the layout wasn't conducive to two people working comfortably on their laptops. Though the room was clean, I noticed that the woodwork hadn't been wiped, espectially the bathroom door. The iron leaked. Wireless internet cost $10 a day per computer;the fitness center cost $10 per day, per person; food prices were laughable, but since the Union Square area has many interesting and reasonable restaurants, that didn't effect us. We didn't read that the minibar, or whatever you call it, is equipped with sensors to charge you if you move something, until we'd picked up a bottle to look at it. Our mistake. Checking in and out was a breeze and the people were lovely and even though parking cost over $40 per day, the parking staff were wonderful.

Great room

This was a very nice exerience, breat corner room with the fastest elevators I have ever seen to the 15th floor. Really great staff, overall a wonderful hotel. It is a shame that the most beautiful city in the world has such a problem with drunks/derelicts passed out on most sidewalks at all hours of the day and night.

Excellent hotel and location

We booked this hotel strictly on reviews. I can honestly say that I was not dissatisfied at all. Perfect location to Union Square, shopping and many bus routes, Powell street cable car, Bart station. Many great resturants and coffee houses around. My only complaints are the bathroom was three star in a four star hotel and I feel that you should have free internet access in the room (WiFi was being installed as we were leaving). The staff and the housekeeping were fabulous.

Try to hit the coffeehouses early. They crowd fast. Use the airport shuttle services (Airporter, Supershuttle) they are faster and cheaper.

Great Beds

The Hotel Nikko had a very comfortable King size bed, with top notch linens and pillows. The chairs in the room were not built for comfort. Plus the bathroom looks like something built in the 70's and very outdated. However, overall, it is in a great location. Again, the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever seen in a hotel.

The location was good and close to Union Square. The staff was not very friendly and did not make us feel welcome. The Hotel food and bar not open very late even on a weekend. The bed was great and we did like the room.
