Bring a bat.
The hotel was nice, staff was helpful. HOWEVER: when you step out the door get ready. panhandlers, crack heads and thugs are everywhere for a block in any direction. You will be bothered no matter what time of day. They could fix this by putting security on the sidewalk rather than sitting in the lobby. I never got knifed, but I did see a few homeless guys fight.

Good luck!
They didn't have my reservation in the system. Thankfully they had one room available. Later that night, I had to get to a meeting and was a little sketched out by the group of weird guys hanging out around the block. I asked the front desk if they could call me a cab. He told me that I would never get one and told me to take the BART. Granted, the BART station is close and convenient, but as a female traveling alone in a new city, sometimes you just wanna take a cab. It seemed like he just dismissed me. I ended up in Oakland (my meeting was NOT in Oakland). The "breakfast" consisted of two unripened oranges and some ok coffee (no milk). Maybe you have to show up right at 7am to get the ripe ones. The business center has a fake copy of Windows. The "gym" is one treadmill (broken) and one stairstepper. But, it is the only place you can watch cable. The rooms have no air-conditioning or heating. There is a $5 "convenience fee" for using a credit card to get something from the vending machine, so bring cash. I'm not even going to chance using their "airport shuttle" to get me to my flight. Ok, there ARE some nice things about the hotel. It certainly is "boutique-y" and very cute. There is a bumping bar/restaurant in the basement, although the wait is usually really long. And it's generally pretty clean. The beds are VERY comfortable, and they provide nice toiletries. I would recommend you KNOW what you're getting into, because it is reasonably priced for a hotel downtown, and it's OK if you don't expect too much. Bottom line, the amenities/services do not match the rather beautiful decor of the hotel.

"THINK TWICE & THREE TIMES TO STAY HERE"
I had just made my reservation one night before. When I called the hotel back to ask about their parking policy, I was greeted by the most vulgar and rudest female member of their staff. I don't think any customer should be called stupid or that any question is stupid or invalid. I have every right to ask any question I like since I am paying for my stay. I cancelled my reservation after speaking to a manager who assured he would get to the bottom of this incident. I will not change my mind nor ever attempt to stay here again because I already have a bad taste of experience of their customer service. Customer beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great for the price!
It was a good stay...for the price i was expecting something worse. It was clean and centrally located. The Warfield is literally right around the corner, i went to see the Scissor Sisters. The only bad thing was that the people at the desk downstairs weren't friendly...but one of the cleaning ladies said good morning. And my room had a window but i really didn't see the point in that since it overlooked a bunch of heating and cooling ducts...although they had a sense of humor about it because someone had drawn a tree on the duct and wrote "view." Oh and it was in what i would call a bad part of town but i made it out alive so it wasnt all that dangerous.

Great $s, good location, nicely renovate
Hotel is 1 block off of market street and hence a few blocks s. of union square. A block from the Golden Gate theatre, a few blocks from the Orpheum, etc. This is the edge of the tenderloin and probably feels dicer than it is. I see plenty of single women and couples in the early hours of the evening so I think the locals perceive it as safe. Room was nice sized with plenty of floor space for the suitcase stand. This is an old hotel which has been nicely renovated in the recent past. Lobby is attractive and inviting. The front desk crew was just awesome. Helpful, really friendly. Like they were having fun hosting me and the other guests I watched them interact with. The room didn't seem to have A/C and had a small barely sufficient electric heater. The shower was hard to figure out how to adjust, but I was successful. I had a 2nd floor room which might be why the street noise was so obvious. Really enjoyed the overall experience. Will be on the top of my convenient overnight choices when I have meetings or personal business in SF.

Nice hotel but in a shady part of town
I booked the Metropolis for the price and closeness to Union Square. However, I didn't realize it's located right where it starts getting shady in town. The hotel doesn't have the best "hotel front" sign - we had to do a doubletake. The room was small like any other boutique hotel in the area. Also, like most other boutique hotels, there's no central air so we had to keep the window open. Our room was facing the street so we heard everything - sirens, people on the streets, construction, etc... Very friendly and helpful staff. Coffee/Tea available in the morning along with free use of a pc/printer in their library.

Great for Price, Beware of Location
The location is near the Tenderloin, so just be aware of your surroundings. Decent otherwise.

Has a lot of potential but....
Hotel staff was extremely nice aside from the valet guys. We were told that parking wasn't for free which was fine so my boyfriend and I parked the car ourselves and we left the keys with the front desk if in any case our vehicle needed to be moved by the valet attendants(fyi- the parking lot is tiny to the point where cars were blocked in by other cars). When it was time to check out, we went and retrieved our keys from the valet staff only to be told that our keys were left in the car. This alarmed us seeing as the neighborhood is not the greatest. The guy we spoke with also insisted that our car was a red one and not the white truck that we actually were driving. When we finally got the keys back, he stood there expecting a tip...1) our truck was parked in the same spot we parked it at. 2) One needs to actually be accommodating to receive a tip. Now about the hotel itself... 1)it definitely has potential but the neighborhood is what made the hotel questionable. There are bums hanging right in front of the hotel even though it is a 5 minute walk from union square. To add to this, walking back to the hotel when the sun went down (around 7 pm) was very creepy so to say b/c bums were out in full force. 2)the room is very tiny. 3)the walls are paper thin...I could here what was going on in the room next to us. 4)When the guests next door to us finally calmed down, there were homeless people yelling and being ridiculous on the streets. Long story short, we couldn't get a goodnight's rest seeing as it was very noisy. Overall, Hotel Metropolis has potential but they need to tweak out a few things to suffice.
