Elegant furnishings and rice-paper screens characterize this 16-story Japantown icon, which anchors the east end of the Japan Center near Pacific Heights. The hotel opened in 1968 and was renovated completely in 2007. Guests of the Hotel Kabuki can choose between rooms with Eastern or Western flair. The O Izakaya Lounge serves Japanese-inspired small plates and cocktails. Also worth noting is the $6 million collection of authentic Japanese art.

Forget it about it

Shared parking with a busy mall ($18 - valet was full!), p...c hair on the toilat that I had to fix because of water leak. Staff with fake smiles, one of the worst breakfast buffet - tasteless plastic. I asked the server (old Asian woman) if they have gluten free bread and she answered that they don't serve free breakfast. I wish I could put this exchange and more on you-tube. Stay away from this over priced hotel.

The Service

I feel that the front desk clerk was rather unfriendly. I reserved the room for adult guest of four. It was a queen size bed and a roll in stretcher. Then, there was not enough towels and toilet tree to accommodate for four people. The worst of it all was the bath tub that had a dark ring around that was not cleaned. The whole experience made me wonder whether or not If I can trust another offer from you. Thank you.

a real disappointment

Given that the outside of the hotel is being refurbished they need to do much more than that to make this a great or even good place to stay. The room itself was clean but very worn. That is very little logic in how things are laid out. They coffee had to be dug out of the closet to be used, the T.V. was on the far side of the room (and even though we don't watch T.V., it would have meant playing it at top volume to if we had wanted to). There was only one coffee mug in the room, only one robe, no facecloths and it talk 3 calls to get the extra mug. The robe and face cloths never appeared. It was nice to be in Japantown but the hotel really is not nice enough to stay at again. There was also a lot of street noise. We did not pay full price for the room so were ok with the stay. The full listed price is as high as many of the better San Francisco Hotels (or higher) we have stayed in. Had we paid full price we would have felt really ripped off. They also do no validate for the parking garage so if you eat or shop in Japantown be sure to get the validation from that establishment. Would not stay here again!

Beware if you are taking your dog!!!!

I stayed at this hotel because it was a good deal and was listed as pet friendly. While they don't charge extra for your pet, when I checked out they found that I had spilled some water on the floor and charged me more than the hotel fee saying that my dog urinated. They were looking to charge people with pets with any little excuse.

BEWARE

The actual hotel is okay. It's average, but beware. My flight left at 6AM, so I had to leave the hotel around 4AM. When I tried to leave and to go the airport, the self parking garage they told me to park in was closed. They said if I want to get my car I needed to pay $50. I knew nothing about this but then the guy at the front desk pointed out a little piece of paper they had it written on. So, they extorted $50 out of me and wouldn't even let me put it on a credit card. They made me pay the security guard $50 cash to open the garage gate.

Will never stay again! They stole!!

My experience sucked....Prices for items in the roomed changed daily and the housekeeping stole my medication and didn't even write up the employee. I was however, comped a night but had to jump through many hoops just to get my meds back and they never offered to pay for the reimbursement of my medication. Do not recommend.

i wouldn't recommend it. i checked out and stayed elsewhere.

IT was dirty, I did not like the room and it smelled musty. the linens were old and rough and the hotel itself needed a makeover. hard to get a cab anywhere, and i did not feel comfortable sleeping there so I checked out.

Tired and uninspired

Tired room, big crack in wash basin, broken toliet seat, chipped and dinged bedside table, crummy tv, no movies, "popcorn" ceiling circa 1962. This place really lacks the typical JDV hotel chain zip. Big disappointment and way too expensive for what it is.

Very poor front desk staff

This was a last minute booking as a convention in San Francisco had caused most hotels to be fully booked. After being quoted one rate over the phone upon arrival (20 mins later) this went up, the next day the rate went up again and the staff behind the front desk kept quoting us different rates for different days - constantly trying to push the rate up, despite the fact that their own website was quoting a lower rate! In the end we got o fed up that we decided to book through [...] and saved ourselves $50 a night. This hotel has recently been renovated and you can see that it has been done on the cheap, on the surface it looks good but their are very apparent cracks - the finishing touches are just not there. If you are told you will have a balcony beware as their idea of a balcony is a strip outside the room about 20 inches wide - you can not even stand out there. The location of this hotel is very good - in the heart of Japan Town with Filmore St down the road - great for bars, restaurants and listening to jazz.
