Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousness
Green is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation.
Highlights
- Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal Building
- Complimentary nightly wine hour (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.)
- On-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine
Rooms
The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply).
Features
Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.
All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.). Hotel Carlton also offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.
Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner.

Great value for the money
Great staff, no views but location good - in the center; hotel has a little rustic atmosphere but it is walking distance from the Union Square; lots of caffes and restaurants in the vicinity; expensive parking - use the one across the street ($20 / day) versus hotel's valet parking at $38.

Great location, good price
NIce, old hotel at very good price in good location that gives easy access to nice restaurants and local attractions. This hotel is well maintained, but it is older and has basic decor. Free bottle of wine at check-in is a nice touch as is free wine tasting at 5PM.

Thin walls
The hotel was decent. The noise was unbearable. I stayed here two nights and both nights the sound was very bad. The first night I called the front desk because I could listen to what was going on on both sides of my room. I guess is a good hotel if you want to party but if you want to relax in between days this hotel is not a good option.

Summer Vacation
The location in San Francisco is not good; several blocks from Union Square and closer to the Tenderloin district (filthy sidewalks, hookers, and homeless asking for money). There is a major construction project going on right behind the Hotel Carlton - not disclosed when reservations were made - so extremely noisy beginning around 7:00 p.m. including Saturday. Broken/cracked plastic ice buckets located at the ice machine and not cleaned during the week we were there. Dust along molding at top of the walls approx. 1/2 inch thick! Staff were courteous.

good location
The hotel has a very good location, but the only problem is that there is a garbage station in the neighborhood so it is a bit noisy during early morning.

okay but we would not go back...
location is okay but the rate is too high for what it is... we barely slept because the heater was making terrible noise all night (and the staff said it was not possible to control at the room level)

Nice for the price
The staff was friendly and quite helpful. The hotel and rooms were clean and well maintained. I will be honest, my favorite part was the complimentary wine social each evening!
