Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousness

Green is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation.

Highlights
  • Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal Building
  • Complimentary nightly wine hour (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.)
  • On-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine
Rooms

The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

Features

Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.

All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.). Hotel Carlton also offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.

Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner.

Fantastic boutique hotel with exceptional service

This boutique hotel is on the border of Nob Hill and the Tenderloin district, within a 15 minute walk from Union Square. This hotel is out of the tourist area, but walking distance to great restaurants, bars and attractions. From the minute we checked in, we were given exceptional service - from a complimentary bottle of wine for our anniversary to the restaurant recommendations. We also enjoyed the complimentary wine at their happy hour, accompanied by live music in the lobby. My only hesitation in staying here would be in the summer, as the rooms don't have air conditioning. We will definitely be back on our next stay!

Great City Stay

Staff at the Hotel Carlton was the best part about the hotel. They are so nice and always joking around with the guests. Would come here any time over any of the other hotels in San Francisco

Great B-Day Getaway

The hotel was great. We were on the 7th floor, the room was small but that's normal for SF. The overall place is very cute and comfy I loved the decor around the floors. BUT the walls are paper thin, you can hear EVERYTHING. I do mean everything, we heard homeless people outside screaming and sirens for most of one night and you can definitely hear the neighbors... The staff are awesome tho, they are all very professional and super friendly! Parking? well its SF what can you expect. The Hotel offers 35/night (plus tax, you pay 40/night) with in and out access. HOWEVER, across the street there is a parking garage (gated) and its only 20/night or 28/night with in and out access. Sweet!

great hotel

They have a great staff, friendly. The neighborhood a bit sketchy but a few blocks away gets better, and is close to a lot including public transportation. I loved free wine and live music in the evening, it was super fun meeting others staying at the hotel. Loved the colors, decor and real art on display. No fake hotel art here. Food was great too. Will always stay here when in San Fran from now on!

Great Hotel

So Fun!!! Love the wine, live music hour every evening. Great staff, fun and helpful. Nice rooms, good hot water and pressure, decorated with real art instead of horrible regular hotel art, great colors, comfy bed. Food was delicious too. The neighborhood might not be right for all, but is close to everything if you are a walker. It's just that for a few blocks around the hotel you are in the tenderloin district and it can be a bit shady. I am from Chicago so it didn't bug me. Two blocks in any direction you are out of it too, and if you are planning on driving around it won't matter. I will never stay anywhere else when in San Fran again!

Pleasant surprise!

A very charming building, a little off the beaten path but worth it considering the staff. From the front desk, to the gentleman handing me a glass of free wine...the biggest surprise was how friendly and human the cleaning staff was in the morning! Never experienced such an honestly lovely hotel staff, without pretense. Looking forward to next time.
